The Gareth SouthGOAT Appreciation Club ft. no fun at all

It's a funny old game.

He's been underwhelming so far. Barely beat Tunisia, hammered Panama and lost that Belgium game. Got very lucky against Colombia when that player missed. He's seems tactically naive at times. If England were on the other side of the draw I think 95% of us would agree England would be home by now, and he would've been tactically outclassed by any half-decent manager. He would've been chastised and probably out of a job. I would say he's nice but he's dull more than anything. He has created a good team spirit though.

Then again, here he is leading England to a semi-final and that's all that matters - so you can't fault him. Can't help but think that against the first decent opposition (which may very well be the final ) he'll get shown up. He should thank his lucky stars that he's probably got the job for 4 more years and a nice pay rise.

Given his managerial experience was somewhat underwhelming and he appeared to be just an interim manager - he’s exceeded all expectations that I and most people would have had. He’s been exceptional, and developed a great team spirit that hasn’t been there for 20 years or so.

The England team is likeable again (even rugby fans might now be cheering them on!).

I've heard quite a few rugby fans saying this lately. Do the rugby national team fans usually not support the football national side? I know that the England cricketers are close friends with some of the rugby lads.

Saw this on social media:

Our father, who art in Moscow, Southgate be thy name.
The cup will come, Kane's work will be done, in Moscow as it is in Tottenham.
Take this day our daily penalty.
And forgive Vardy's offside trespasses, as we forgive those who bet against us.
And lead us not into under-achievement. But deliver us the title.
For football’s coming home.
The history and the glory.
Forever and ever.
Our men.

There are of course lots of people who like both rugby and football. But a good proportion of rugby who can’t stand football or kiss ball and a lot of it’s due to the attitude of the players - feigning injury, generally being pathetic over paid prima donnas - a lot of which is fair! I think the rugby lads have seen that England are playing like a proper team, putting any club differences aside and have risen above the antics of our South American opponents.

Ah yes that does make sense. Cheers.

Have to admit, he has done an exceptional job. He seems to have clear vision. He dropped players who do not fit his plan instead of bending backward for the sake of their stardom or club they play for.

I was impressed when he dropped smalling and said he wants someone who can play from the back. Same with other players. This is deviation from the modus operandi of his predecessors.

He has not got best players but they all fit well in his jigsaw puzzle. He has formed a unit that can play. Just look at the back line... inexperienced players except young. But how they handle pressure without panicking is admirable, and credit goes to Southgate.

Fantastic manager. Hoping to see him around for next decade.

He's been really good, and not just because of how far we've got. England has tended to choose very conservative managers and bombed out anyway. Southgate on the other hand has been working through the youth levels where they've been trying to modernise the playing style and it really shows. Guys like hodgson and eriksen would never have played a midfield of lingard alli and Henderson in a million years. We'd still be watching a side picked by The Sun.

Its not that Southgate had plethora of talent to select from like France or spain. Team selection was very very tricky. He has been bold and put trust in inexperienced players and they responded.

What a team he has set for the future and he has changed the english game philosophy. He has proved that there is talent and they don't need to be stars or play for big clubs. No future manager has to be under pressure of stardom or big clubs. This is great for English football.

Honestly, I am highly impressed by Southgate's footballing brain. He is a turning point. Knighthood for him I say.

He has a lot of credits for this world cup:

-Pickford with shit-hart at home
-Maguire
-the tactic
-walker as cb
-walker & trippier together
-young as a lb
-young taking corners
-playing with only one cm (henderson)
-possession starting from behind picking only cb who are good passer (smalling at home)

Against Colombia Southgate did not play very different tactic than Jose. England were happy Columbia to have possession. They were effectively intercepting and launching counter attack. It is the calmness and not to allow other team to pressurize you and then get soaked in to it. Which is exact opposite of united players.

Only if united has calm and composed back line and midfield as England. We need new CB for sure.

. ...or a new manager.

The best thing (see worst) if England win it will be the FA and chums sucking themselves off and talking about how their endless reviews, grass roots investment and their appointment of Rowland Rat saved English football. When the truth is that this is a fairly fallow period for English talent and a fortunate draw and a little grit has done more than all their Nero-esque fiddling.

Got to give him credit for picking and starting Pickford.
Rock solid yesterday, and saved that Penalty in the shootout. Looks the real deal, hopefully won't go to his head like Hart.

Stones has played well, always expect a howler like for city but he's been class.

Our set pieces have been very good too.

Reminds me of a scene in cool runnings. The prayer

Southgate's answer at the end...

What about the recent success at youth level? That all from lucky draws too?

Its evident that the English efforts at grassroot level are start to paying off.

Many of the players that are the backbone of this England side played under Southgate at U21 level.

For the first time in my life, I am watching an England with an actual plan on the field. Some people say that this group of England players arent really that great compared to past England squads, but that means they are greater than the sum of their parts. That cannot be a bad thing. Most England squads of the past were the opposite.

I wouldn’t be against the idea of thinking at him as a Mourinho replacement, that will happen probably quite soon (at the end of this or next season)

We have ( Lindelof ,Bailly and Rojo are comfortable on the ball ) , the problem is the chuckle brothers Smalling and Jones keep on playing instead , they both caused panic and incapable to pass between line when pressured. Southgate got rid of Smalling and only use Jones as backup. Manager like Hodgson probably going to start Smalling and Cahill ( and Lallana , Wilshere ) instead , they would already crashed out of tournament.

I think he needs to win it to get a knighthood. Regardless of results though, he has done a good job and with players getting experience, England should be one of the favourites for next Euros.

Yeah I could see him staying on at England manager for at least another world cup.

Jose will probably be gone long long long before then.
Unless he terribly crashes in next Euros, he needs to get another World Cup. This team is his baby (I think that a lot of players played under him in U21) so he should be allowed to see what he can do with this team when it gets more experience.

No real surprise. Lucky to get past Colombia (without Rodriguez), and the first instance of playing a good side England lose. His only real strength is man-management.

Still, he'll get another 4 years for better or worse.

He didn't change things up at all. England were in trouble from the start of the second half and he kept the tactics the same.

He's at least partly to blame for this. Gareth Southgit OUT.

Good job on picking your centre-backs Southshite. Glad your stubbornness didn't cost you in the end.

Sticking with Alli also.

But hey, at least he's selling waistcoats in the middle of a hot summer.
