The MMA thread

MMA is one of the few sports where age is not a handicap.

At least not yet. Maybe in ten years when everyone is a Machida that has been training since they were 2 ;p However right now at this stage its still lots of people picking it up after college when they have gone as far as they can in other sports.

yeah but im 31... i just dont have the time for the training...

job, mrs etc... you need realy good cardio to do mma at any level... and that takes time and effort

I should give the Mel Gibson Brave Heart Saint Crispin's day speech here!

UFC middleweight champion and No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter Anderson Silva will not fight at UFC 95 in London, according to a report from f4wonline.com.

That means we won't be stuck with the obvious mismatch of Silva vs. Thales Leites, but it leaves some pretty big questions hanging out there regarding who will fight on the UFC 95 card and when we'll see Silva in the Octagon again.

For starters, thousands of fans in London bought tickets because they thought they were going to see Silva. The UFC needs to give those fans a good main event if it doesn't want to turn off the British fans it has worked so hard to attract. But what will that main event be? It won't be a title fight, because the champions in the other weight classes are committed to either UFC 92 on December 27 or UFC 94 on January 31. Several of the organization's other big draws, including Chuck Liddell and Randy Couture, have said they won't be fighting again that soon. It's going to be tough to find a top-notch main event for UFC 95 without Silva in the fold.

There are also questions about whether the UFC really has a middleweight under contract who can provide a serious challenge to Silva. The Spider is a great fighter who wants great fights, and opponents like his last two -- James Irvin and Patrick Cote -- just aren't challenging enough for him.

fecking hell...Anyone watching the UFC ultimate fighter finale thing?

Did you see that head kick by Johnson that completely ko'd Burns? Unbelievable.

Any news on UFC95...

I thought they said the card would be annonced at the start of this week but I cant see anything on the ufc site????

Im gonna be so pissed off if silvas not there

Mate, I've been staying away from the thread since the news broke, pissed off am I, second time this year that a UFC main event in London has gone pear shaped, beginning to regret abandoning my plays to go to Dublin.

Its probably about 80/20 that Silva wont fight at London, he doesn't want to fight as soon as Feb, even though he claimed he wanted to fight as soon as possible after the Cote fiasco - only hope is that Dana & the match fixer convince him that it is a good move for the 'Anderson Silva brand' to fight overseas.

Only other fighter confirmed is Paul Kelly who looked half decent in Birmingham, but I've a very strong feeling that its going to be Chuck or Couture headlining - just hope the Huerta rumours are true - but still no news is a bit worrying as its only around 10 weeks away.

huerta and I'll be happy...

huerta, silva and hardy and i'll be over the friggin moon...

Maybe they could throw Chuck in against Couture if they can decide on which weight to fight at - wouldnt mind watching that live but very unlikely - doubt Chuck will get another title fight so maybe he will move up a weight to take a few big fights?

Which Setanta show, the one for the troops? Did you see that lad who said he modeled himself on Silva & totally destroyed someone with his Muay Thai - amazing fighter.

it was a preview show for ufc 92...

as for chuck and couture... for me that will happen at the ufc in berlin... couture speaks fluent german apparently and hes pretty much the only ufc fighter who does so i would have thought that they will need him for that one which is ufc99...

i have also heard that the fight would most likley be at light heavy...

That is definitely the strong rumour. As soon as he lost to Lesnar, that's all the message boards have been talking about.

Lanky lad with weird mutton chops? That was one hell of a beat down. Did you see the state of yer man's head after he was finished with him?

EDIT. I may be thinking about a fight from the TUF finale. My bad.

Hazelett's from a little town called Louisa in Kentucky. My wife is from a town 10 minutes away and my sister-in-law is a teacher there. It's a little redneck town with nothing to do, but since I've been there a hundred times or so, I always have to cheer for him. Great BJJ.

hes young as well...

strikings pretty easy and in a couple of years he could be pretty useful... has long limbs and if he can develop a bit in his stand up he will be very dangerous...

I remember koscheck defeted him earlier this year... but if he can develop his striking he can be a top top condender for 10 years +

his JJ is great... hes even defeted a gracie which is always a bit of a claim to fame...

hes one fighter i hope dan can avoid for a while...

the welterweight division is actually quite stacked...

GSP
BJ (possibly if he wins he will step up)
Alaves
Fitch
Koscheck
Serra
Hughes
Parisyan
Hazlet
and my favoirite (though i am biased ) Hardy

its a great division (with or without BJ)

Forrest Griffin vs. Rashad Evans
Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira vs. Frank Mir
Wanderlei Silva vs. Quinton Jackson
CB Dolloway vs. Jorge Rivera
Yushin Okami vs. Dean Lister
Cheick Kongo vs. Mustapha Al-Turk
Brad Blackburn vs. Ryo Chonan ... (this will be a slugfest i think)
Reese Andy v Matt Hamill
Artoni Hardonk v Mark Burch
Patrick Barry v Dan Evenson

Ill stick with these...

evans, mir and jackson...

all seem to be outsiders but i think they can all still win

that's more or less where i'd sit, too. i'll only call out the top 3 fights, as i don't every fighter in the other bouts.

Forrest Griffin vs. Rashad Evans - i really can't call this, but Evans seems to be knocking out everyone he faces at the moment so i'll go with Rashad, but could go either way.

Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira vs. Frank Mir - Mir to win by KO/TKO

Wanderlei Silva vs. Quinton Jackson - another tough one to call. this'll be fight of the night i reckon.

I'm a bit unsure about Rampage, never really seen what all the hype is about, of course I saw the Chuck fight, but thought he was second best before putting the Iceman on his arse.

Still no news on 95 EZee - other than Paul Kelly is now out due to injury and Nathan Marquardt is in - got to be releasing some fights soon...

yeah... i got my ticket through today...

it has "fighters subject to change" written on it...

well dont they have to announce something before they change it

 Maybe there will be some kind of announcement when in the queue to get into the place.

My tickets not come through yet, they must have 15,000 tickets still to sell so the announcement must be on the horizon - maybe something will be mentioned tomorrow night.

On a side note I've been listening to Joe Rogans stand up comedy he done a few years back, he's a funny guy.

its only 10 weeks away isnt it...

must announce it next week...

if not then they are pushing it because people will just spend their money on the sales instead of tickets...

You're picking Mir who has no striking ability to KO BigNog who's never been knocked out????

i know *** is favourite...

but mir just has so much talent...

before his accident he was awsome... and even back then he wasnt focused... i just think now that he looks focused and his bjj is omparable to nogs... i fancy him to get a submission...

yep, i know. it's not a passionate call, but i'm gonna say tko stoppage.

it's a hunch, and if i don't go with it, and then it happens, i'd be kicking myself.

Mir is just so pumped up for this fight it's scary, i think he's gonna win. but ***'s BJJ is so good that i can't imagine him tapping.

I'm going to go for these now.

I can't see how Mir would beat Nogueira although I would love it if he did. Nogueira has never been knocked out though and his BJJ is better than Mir's. Mir might have to go for a points victory. Has Nogueira ever fought anyone as good as Mir at BJJ?

Evans against Forrest will be close but I'll pick Evans. I think he has slightly more in his repertoire but Forrest makes up for that in heart.

I'm really looking forward to Wanderlei v Rampage. It could be brilliant. I think Wanderlei is such a good striker that he will overwhelm Rampage.

I'm actually really looking forward to Lister and Okami. However I am not looking forward to seeing Kongo who is to me the most boring fighter around.

What a load of Bollocks, am so angry right now;

UFC 97 - Silva & Leites Officially unveiled for Canada

UFC 95 - Will not be a ppv event in America, which is a strong indication that the Joe Stevenson fight will be the main event.

Unbelievable, I'm so angry.

Well if it's not PPV then it'll be like another Fight Night. There won't be any of the top matches.

You should consider getting back your UFC 93 tickets!

if they make stevenson the main fight i will never buy another ufc ticket again... and i suspect i wouldnt be alone...

A bit more calmer now than I was earlier - nothing is official and they still have 15,000 tickets to sell so maybe there will be a decent fight on the bill - dont get me wrong I would like to see Joe Daddy live, and I'll be glad to watch Dan's UFC career unfold, but I just feel cheated.

For the third consecutive UK event on the trot there has been an anti climax, half expected Silva not to appear, but to not charge the American fans to watch it pretty much says that it will be a fight card full of 'up and coming fighters' - which is fine - but why didn't they advise this in advance.

Think its best is to reserve judgment until the fight card is officially announced, here's hoping this whinging is all in vain.

Mir by TKO? Have you ever seen BigNog fight?

If Mir stands with BigNog he is likely going to get knocked out. Don't let Tim Sylvia fool you, BigNog has boxing skills to go with his granite chin.

I would say Nogs BJJ slightly edges Mirs but they are close enough that I can see them negating each other.

Striking, BigNog is miles ahead of Mir, I would be completely shocked if Mir tried to fight BigNog standing. Mir is a ground guy moreover he is a ground guy with weak take downs.

BigNog easily takes the striking department.
BigNog easily takes the take down department.
BigNog edges the submission game.

Way I see this fight going is BigNog keeps it standing where Mir will be a fish out of water. BigNog is the superior boxer, Mir is not known for his take downs and besides both guys prefer to be on their back.

BigNog wins by KO or decision after primarily a standup fight.

I'd love to see Mir beat BigNog but I just can't see it happening. BigNog is just that little bit better in all departments.
