Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

San Andreas - I love The Rock, I'm in love with Alexandra Daddario... everything else is moot.

Though actually, in terms of the disaster movie genre - which has been pretty poor in more recent years - this was probably one of the better ones.

Big Trouble in Little China is one of those films that is very much a product of its time. It certainly seems pointless to remake it. Added to which Russell's Jack Burton is a bumbling clown and pretty much relies on his sidekick to bail him out of a lot of situations. Now, The Rock can play that kind of character quite well (Pain & Gain for example) but the chances are that they'll lose that aspect and just make it a straight action movie which again would be pointless.

The Rock to star in Big Trouble in Little China remake.

Heads will roll for this.

Nooooooooooo!

Mr Barlow was good, and I liked the flying boy at the window as a kid. It's aged terribly though, don't watch it again!

What We Do In The Shadows did an excellent take on Mr Barlow.

It hasn't aged too well allright, first saw it when I was around 12 and those two brothers floating and scraping at the window meant I kept the bedroom light on for months afterwards.

Interstellar - it's a bit of a slow-burner to start off with, but by the end it's absolutely mind-blowing. Probably have to watch it twice to properly appreciate it. Some of the visual imagery is stunning, and the way that Nolan depicts some of the abstract complexities of space/time travel is amazingly well done. A solid 9/10 for me.

It Follows - I really enjoyed this. It didn't rely on cheap scare tactics (maybe one of two jumpy moments), but was more centred on the atmosphere and the unnerving thought of a threat constantly stalking you no matter what. I thought it had a few really nice touches to it with how it was shot, especially the scenes where one character can see It but you don't, yet can still feels its presence and threat. I thought it had a great 80s style (think Halloween) soundtrack to. If you are a fan of more atmospheric horrors like The Shining it may be more for you. 8/10

What we do in the shadows - Mockumentary style comedy staring Jermaine from Flight of the Concords (similar style humour as well), it's about three vampires going about their daily lifes whilst being filmed by a documentary crew. It's all tongue in cheek and fun and apparently mostly improvised, definitely worth a watch 7/10

Mad Max - Thought this was fecking excellent. It's not easy to make a film 90% action whilst still holding your attention, so credit to the pacing and the directing. I can only handle about 20 seconds of Transformers action before being bored, but this movie gripped me the whole way. 8.5/10

Zombeavers.

Wow.

Absolutely shite, yet I felt compelled to watch until the end. I'm glad I did, because there is a particularly awesome death near the end
Guy gets his cock bitten off by a beaver.

The rules of zombeaver weren't clear, which was a bit confusing and/or shit. At first it seemed that if you were bitten/killed by beavers then you would turn into a zombie, then it changed into a case of anybody in the movie can randomly turn into a zombie! :wenger:

It could have been the best film ever, it really was a let down. I wouldn't recommend it, although if you can find a clip of the awesome death then check that out.

Same here, firstly had to watch it because of the title and even though its shite its captivatingly shite !

Air Collision

Where do I start with this, It was made by Asylum, so you already know its going to be bad but OMG not this bad.
Air Force One , computer goes mad, Solar Storm , it has Reginald Veljohnson Sgt. Al Powell
from Die Hard in, at the they even manage to throw some love in there.
There is plot holes that big , you could fly Air Force One thought them.
The acting , the special affects both dreadful, but the story did have something about it and could of been much better done.
But I am a sucker for bad disaster films just like this and it kept me watching until the end.

Blackwood

This was an excellent British Ghost Story.
Having recovered from a shattering emotional breakdown, college professor Ben Marshall relocates to the countryside with his wife and young son, hoping for a fresh start. He has a teaching job lined up and a new home to move into; things finally look to be going Ben's way. Until, that is, he starts to feel that something isn't quite right in the house. Finding himself plagued by spectral visions, Ben becomes obsessed with uncovering the truth behind a local mystery that appears to be putting the lives of his family in danger.
Ed Stoppard was really good has the professor, but for me the star was Sophia Myles (Madame De Pompadour from maybe the best Doctor Who EP ever)
It has some fantastic atmospheric music, brooding sky's, panoramic moorlands, eerie woods and old houses that you know are harbouring dark secrets behind their closed doors.
For me it has everything you want form a a ghost story and a cracking twist at the end.
I would recommend this straightway.

China Town (Coin Locker Girl) 2015 - Korean Movie

About an orphan girl stashed in the locker box and somehow ended up working / adopted by a female mafia boss in China town, and her story from then on. A pretty dark and hold no barrel Korean noir movie, although it comes across as boring near the end with a pretty predictable been there done that plot, the acting is quite ok. Pretty passable if you like asian noir, although not as dark as it can be.

Timbuktu, absolutely brilliant film about the effects of militant Islam (Ansar Dine) on the people of northern Mali.

Saw this last week. What a beautiful movie - subtle, understated, with a touch of humour. Dazzling shots of the Sahara, semi-comical/semi-threatening jihadists, snippets of gorgeous West African music. Perfectly captures the weirdness of the situation, while at the same time never neglecting to note the more brutal aspects of the jihadists' occupation.

2001 Maniacs: Field of Screams

One of the craziest film I have ever seen.
Gory for the sake of gory, no real plot, dreadful acting, but in parts pretty funny.
If you like blood and guts for the sake of it and a laugh, you will like this, if like is the right word for a film like this.

Hungerford

The lives of a group of teenagers are turned upside down when their town is taken over by sinister forces.
Debut film by director Drew Casson , who also played the lead, small budget and also a found footage film.
If you watch it, they way they find to kill the Zombies, is quite possibly the daftest thing I have seen in a Zombie film.

Stonehurst Asylum

A recent medical school grad who takes a position at a mental institution soon finds himself taken with one of his colleagues -- though he has no initial idea of a recent, horrifying staffing change.
Was not expecting much from this despite ts excellent cast, but it was a cracking film.
Acting was first rate, Kate Beckinsale , Ben Kingsley and Jim Sturgess the pick of them.
Not a very fast paced film , with not that much action, but this is more than made up for in a very good story, plenty of suspense, a couple of good twists, one very early but the one at the end completely threw me , not a clue about it.

Bui Doi Cho Lon (China Town)

Vietnamese movie I've mistakenly thought as Thailand movie. It's basically Troy set in a gangstar theme, the action is pretty lame for nowdays standard, the only redeeming factor is the bad guys is super cool and bad ass, tales of betrayal love stupidity and chivalry. I'm impressed by the movie as it's a vietnamese and they have made a good leap in movie making with this one. The Imdb rates it at 7.0 which is about right considering it's Vietnam.

Zabriskie Point

Didn't work for me. It has some good moments but overall is a pretty clumsy poke at capitalist America by a pretentious Italian. The final sequence is great though and the cinematography is gorgeous.

I'm seeing this as part of a double feature with Blow Up. I like Blow Up but it could be a trying three and a half hours.

Parallels
A brother and sister (along with a friend) come across a building whilst searching for their missing dad. The building is a gateway to various and unlimited alternate realities for earth. The film starts off well but in the end, it finishes without really resolving the plot/mystery, probably because the director was hoping for a sequel. This is a silly move and made the film feel incomplete. The characters also do some of the dumbest shit I have seen in a film and this really ruins what could have been a a really movie 5.5/10

:D
That invites a tongue in chick response, but I decided to lay her straight.

Zabriskie Point isn't very good but it's still worth a watch, a failure but a magnificent kind of failure. The Passenger is a way better English feature from Antonioni.

I'm curious to see it because it was left off the film school curriculum, and sometimes that's a good thing. It runs after Blow Up, so I may need some Dexys to keep my brain on point. Or beer.

8/10? To each his own I suppose. I loved the cast, but thought the film was messy (3/10 type messy).

Just watched Leviathan (2014). Very good film from Russian director Andrey Zvyagintsev. Explores contemporary life in Russia with allegorical references to the Book of Job.

10/10.

fair point, maybe 8 was a bit high, 6 would of been better.
I just thought it was a decent film, Kingsley was excellent as the mad doctor.

Yeah, my 3 was definitely too low. I could agree on a 6, the cast really saves it imo. Kingsley, like you say, is excellent.
