Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Am I the only person who has zero interest in watching a cartoon? I understand why you lot with kids will watch Pixar stuff, but I can't fathom why an adult would willingly watch one alone or with a bird.

What am I missing here?

Rush

Second time I have watched this and I thought it was even better.
The actors playing Hunt and Lauda both excellent, the race scenes were just stunning.
First time round I gave it 9/10 get one better this time.

10/10

A lot of the Pixar stuff is really quite excellent.

I suggest you watch Toy Story, Up and Wall-E and see what you think.

The Simpsons?

I used to think the exact same thing, and still do every now and then, but some of them are really, really good. Spirited Away is probably the best I've ever see.

I watched one about the jungle or something and it just bored the shit out of me while the three adults with me were giggling. I wanted to go and read my book but had to sit through it.

Installment two of Wong Kar Wai week is Fallen Angels. Chungking Express's weird, bipolar sibling with a darker tone and an even more unpackable plot. The more shrill, hyperactive sequences were quite grating but I liked the hit man's story and the mute's relationship with his father. You can see a lot of his style in Winding Refn films and 90s videoclips. Only You is a great tune too.

Yeah the apartment cleaning scene in Chungking Express with the Chinese cover of The Cranberries (was it Faye Wong singing?) was great too.

What's next? Days of Being Wild of In The Mood For Love?
Days of Being Wild is the first installment of a loose trilogy consisting of ITMFL and 2046 so I'd start with that one.

There's also Happy Together with more 90's cityscapes but with much more grittiness and less humour.

I think it was her singing too.

Never quite understood the Up love myself. The opening retrospective is maybe the most moving bit of cartoonery ever, but it drops down a notch from there, and once the action moves to South America, it's nothing special.

As far as 'inspiration' for Inside Out is concerned, there's quite a funny final sketch in Woody Allen's 'Everything you always wanted to know about Sex.. ' with the same idea.

Except it's about sex. So don't watch it with the kids.

Not seen Inside Out yet, of course, since well for some daft reason, Pixar still delays released to the UK for a month. But yeah, not overly fond of Up either, it's their most childish, which is fine since they are children's films first and foremost for adults to also appreciate and like. But eh, it's decent. just no way near the level of their top stuff, which for my money is Ratatouille or the first Toy Story.

Leviathan: Bleak, beautifully shot, solidly scripted and brilliantly acted. I’m not sure enjoyable is the word I’d use to describe this so much as engrossing, but there is something to be said for the enjoyment of watching something this well put together even if it leaves you with an empty and slightly depressed feeling once it is over. Not for a moment does it feel like you’re watching something that is anything less than completely authentic. Simply put a brilliant well told but depressing story about power, corruption and life for those on the receiving end of it.

Get Hard

Stayed limp. One of the most unfunny films I've ever seen and that's coming from someone who generally likes Will Ferrell. The less said about Kevin Hart the better because if that guy is a comedian then he's stealing a living.

i enjoyed the movie. Not the best of course, but that scene with the dick was pretty hilarious.

Agreed on Kevin Hart. Its like he read his lines 1 second late. plus he is unfunny as feck

Meh. That gag (pun intended) was funnier in hot tub time machine and it didn't even need the latex schlong.

Does The Lego Movie count as animation? I'd say it's better than any Pixar film, even Toy Story (their best IMO)

I've got a lot of love for the Spongebob movie too. Absolutely barking mad but great fun too. Genuinely surreal at times, in a way that lots of cartoons try but fail to achieve.

Good review, one of my favourite films of last year.

Lego Movie is fun, but the pacing is a bit problematic. It's just too fast all the time. It also doesn't have much heart to it. Some of the Dreamworks stuff works well in the more 'entertaining action' animation, but where Pixar is better than its competitors is with the emotional aspect. A lot of the other animation films can be fun and entertaining, but ultimately are quite cold (except Dragons which was a bit of an exception). Pixar has got it right so many times with the themes it chose. I'm actually surprised that more people don't adore Up to be honest, sure the 10 first minutes are its high point, but it's also a very sweet tale about knowing how to let go and about the passing of time (which is of course a common theme throughout Pixar's films).

I read an article recently which was saying that even though Pixar had different directors, you could look at their filmography since the first Toy Story and consider them as probably the most influential 'auteur' of the past two decades.

This is of course for occidental animation. Ghibli is great for the emotional stuff in Japan.

I think Pixar movies can get a bit soppy tbh. I guess that's a problem with most kids movies but when I think back to kids movies that moved me when I was a kid - stuff like Bambi, ET or even Jungle Book - they seemed to have genuine emotional heft, as opposed to the slightly schmaltzy vibe you get from some of Pixar's stuff. Might well be an age thing, though. The more recent Pixar films might have had a greater effect on me if I watched them as a kid.

Now I'm an adult, I really can't be arsed with kids films that try to have some sort of message about how we should all love each other. Much rather something that's fast, funny and a bit of a romp. That said, Wreck-it Ralph managed to do pathos quite well. Another one of the better recent cartoons IMO.

If you liked Lego Movie you'd like Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs. Written by the same people (who also wrote the 21 Jump Street movies)

Yes! Another cracker. Really enojyed it. Which reminds me, I haven't seen the sequel. Must watch it with the nippers the next rainy afternoon...

Ah yeah, Cloudy is quite good, didn't know it was the same writing team as Lego Movie (though it makes sense). It's a better film than Lego I thought, and the sequel is very good too.
