El Mariachi
The fact that Robert Rodriguez made this on such a tight budget and ingenious filmmaking makes me compelled to give it a few extra points but overall I found it a little stagnant and boring 5/10

Desperado

Probably what RR had in mind when he made El Mariachi. Sexy, stylish and fun. Banderas is awesome in it and it a really fun western style shoot em up set in mexico. Loved it 8/10

Once Upon A Time In Mexico

Thought this was a massive downgrade from Desperado. Johnny Depp's character was a bit silly and Banderas' character seems lifeless which I guess was intentional but at the same time really hurt the film 5.5/10

Was a few years I saw it, but I actually preferred El Mariachi tbh. Desperado is so over the top and not in a good way. Machine gun-packed guitar cases is cheese, but the blue mouldy kind rather than a fine manchego.

Notes on a Scandal

Barbara Covett (Judi Dench) is a domineering and solitary teacher who rules with an iron fist over her classroom at a decaying state-run secondary school in London. Save for her cat, Portia, Barbara lives alone, without friends or confidantes - but her world changes when she meets the school's new art teacher, Sheba Hart (Cate Blanchett). Sheba appears to be the kindred spirit and loyal friend Barbara has always been seeking. But when she discovers that Sheba is having an incendiary affair with one of her young students, their budding relationship takes an ominous turn. Now, as Barbara threatens to expose Sheba's terrible secret to both her husband (Bill Nighy) and the world, Barbara's own secrets and dark obsessions come tumbling to the fore, exposing the deceptions at the core of each of the women's lives.

Superb performance by Judi Dench. The affair is barely credible though.

7/10

Brill sinister melodrama. Seems it was a little overlooked.

I watched The Last Five Years because everyone was raving about it. Lively but irritating musical about a doomed, self obsorbed couple. Has a touch of that sickening sex and the city new york aspirational, woe is me narcissism. Not without a couple of good moments though. Also it turns out that in fact noone was raving about it.

Thought Slow West to be a pleasant enough, plummy western. It's flowery style felt fairly novel for the genre and it has a great cast. Though it's twee and a bit feeble and empty.

I salute the running time.

We are Still Here

After their teenage son is killed in a car crash, Paul (Andrew Sensenig) and Anne (Barbara Crampton) move to the quiet New England countryside to try to start a new life for themselves. But the grieving couple unknowingly becomes the prey of a family of vengeful spirits that reside in their new home, and before long they discover that the seemingly peaceful town they've moved into is hiding a terrifyingly dark secret. Now they must find a way to overcome their sorrow and fight back against both the living and dead as the malicious ghosts threaten to pull their souls - and the soul of their lost son - into hell with them
I have seem better but also seen a hell of a lot worse.
Felt very much like an 80's horror, very The Fog like.
There was a very good back story that was hardly touched on.
Decent solid horror film

5/10

Terminator Genisys:
I liked it...
Cheesy, but had some nostalgia. Not the best story, or acting but decent action. Better than the third terminator.

6.5/10

Did you get a little Barbara Crampton thing going on after Re-Animator! Have a look at From Beyond if you want to see her in some kit.

The Haunting of Harry Payne

Ex-gangster Harry Payne confronts his violent past and vengeance from beyond the grave.
A very strange combination of British Gangster film and a ghost film, with some very bad acting in it.
The film's plot involves a former gangster just released from prison. He's now an old man, haunted both psychologically and physically by ghosts from the past. His new life is interrupted by a spate of mildly gory murders, and it all makes sense come a twist ending.

Watchable with a twist at the end I did not see coming.

4/10

Blue Ruin:

Quite a nice take on the old revenge genre. Couldn't quite warm to the oddball/sappy main character but it was still enjoyable enough. I would have liked the villains of the piece fleshed out a bit more, but it's a minor quibble really. It was refreshing to see a revenge film where the protagonist doesn't automatically become a surveillance/weapons expert because they've picked up a gun and a pair of binoculars.

Worth a watch.

For its budget I thought it was terrific. Great economical storytelling. Plus Buzz from Home Alone! All grown up.

I agree with this, took a while for me to get into it though.

Inside Out: Much more consistently quality than recent Pixar movies. Very funny, imaginative, emotionally involving. Who knew you could get so invested in an imaginary elephant-thing voiced by Richard Kind? I'm not sure what young kids will make of it though. It's certainly got the gags and the bright colours but they might prefer the simplicity of the Minions to the story of a girl who needs to be saved by Sadness from dying inside.

Richard Kind was one of the things I couldn't get into. He is so fecking irritating.

My only other real bugbear is I thought the animation of Joy was really poor. She looked like one of the stock characters from Wii tennis.

Jurassic World

Normally I love films like this, I am a sucker for the big hollywood blockbuster, but with this I thought it was just poor.
The story was badly written and so predictable , the acting was pretty bad, I thought it was just a rehash of the first film.
Some of it was just plain daft, a massive dino with a mix of T Rex , tree frog ,cuttle-fish and Raptor DNA.
I watched it all and wanted to enjoy it more than I did.

Saw it recently too. I'd give it a 5/10. Like you said I thought the acting was terrible. The aunt and kids being the worst of a bad bunch. There were a few good moments, mainly the ones with just the dinosaurs but couldn't help but feel like they played it super safe and was ultimately kinda meh.

And yes, that elephant was annoying as feck. No Sadness in me when he disappeared.

4/10 is generous. What an appalling pile of shit. I thought (despite warnings from people who'd seen it) that it might contain a few bits that were worth watching, but no. Terrible. I would give it 1/10 purely for the presence of Lauren Lapkus.

1/10 is a bit mean , it was a better film than that, I like the references to the original film , finding the old visitors centre and the bloke buying the T Shirt from ebay, but the rest was not good.

Tree of Life is on TV. Wasn't going to watch it as I had missed the start but I've been drawn in by how gorgeous it looks.

Alien outpost

Similar to restrepo with aliens and I really like this movie. For me a underrated indie movie now streaming on Netflix in the USA. 8/10

It Follows

Another decent take in horror after babadock? This movie is shot so well reminding me of phantasm and Halloween and the score is great. The movie will have you questioning and discussing what it all means. 8/10

Ex Machina

Wow love this movie. Certainly a candidate for my top ten of the year. AI thriller great performances 9/10

I saved myself by falling asleep half way through. Seemed like a rehash of the original film(s).

Ted 2 It is hard to convey exactly how rubbish this film is. It makes the original seem like The Godfather in comparison. One gross out laugh in the fertility clinic aside this was also a laugh free zone. Avoid at all costs 1/10 and the 1 is for the single funny bit

Did you enjoy it? It's not everyone's cup of tea, but I really like that film.

It's not hard to see why a lot of people would dislike it but I actually quite enjoyed it too. I'll have to watch it from the beginning again though, I missed a fair bit of the start.

Bullets Over Broadway

In 1928, David Shayne (John Cusack) is an idealistic young playwright newly arrived on Broadway. In order to gain financing for his play, God of Our Fathers, he agrees to hire Olive Neal (Jennifer Tilly), the actress/girlfriend of a gangster. She is demanding and talentless, but her gangster escort Cheech (Chazz Palminteri) turns out to be a genius, who constantly comes up with excellent ideas for revising the play.

Very enjoyable & well-cast Woody Allen film.

7.5/10

Inside Out

Came into the theater with considerably high expectations due to the great reviews from just about everyone. Was not disappointed. It was especially relatable to me because I also moved (several times) and visited San Francisco a few times. It's not really a kid's movie though; some deep lessons in there.

Yeah, I didn't really enjoy it. Remember it felt pretentious and being really slow. That said, the one scene with the origin of the universe leading to the dinosaurs was visually amazing.
