Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

I've just realised that the guy who's all evil in '12 Years A Slave' is the same actor (Paul Dano) as the crazy guy in 'There Will Be Blood' and also the crazy guy in 'Prisoners'. He's been in a few decent films; he (or is agent) is really good at picking good scripts and he's putting in some strong performances.

Might be one to watch out for in the future (even though I'm not sure he can carry a film on his own).

Also is the sicko brother in little miss sunshine...

and the human tripod in the girl next door...

Probably is among the very first names on the list when casting a role for a creepy fecker. Im curious if he will be able to get out of that role in big movies.

Paul Dano has already been past the one to watch stage and is now firmly cemented as a very solid character actor.

You are probably right though he probably couldn't carry a big budget movie on his own, although he was leading man in a well received movie called Ruby Sparks(haven't seen it myself yet).
 
Event 15

A very good film about Three soldiers trapped in an elevator when terrorists set off a dirty bomb. But when White escapes, her world turns upside down as she realizes nothing is what it seems.
There is a twist, but I did not see it coming.
The 3 leads were all excellent, plenty of tension created.
Well worth watching.

13 Sins

A film about A cryptic phone call, that sets off a dangerous game of risks for Elliot, a down-on-his luck salesman. The game promises increasing rewards for completing 13 tasks, each more sinister than the last.
I thought a very decent film , has a few good plot twists in it, 1 I saw a mile off an 1 that I did not see.
There is some gore, some black humour, all in all a well written film
Mark Webber was excellent has Elliot, Ron Perlman did a good job has the Detective.
Another film well worth watching.

He's playing the lead in the Beach Boys biopic, so that should indicate his ability to carry a pic. That said, not sure how big budget it is.
 
Snowpiercer Bat-shit crazy Korean made film (in English) about a train that defies all logic, with Tilda Swinton and Billy Elliot. Enjoyed it. 6/10.
 
Thought it was great myself, this is what I wrote back in December when I saw it:

Snowpiercer was a really good film, it's pretty clever but doesn't feel the need to take the viewer by the hand, and it's visually very impressive. Loads of great scenes, and I felt the film got better as it advanced and as you discovered more and more about the train. It's really worth seeing and will probably be in the end of the year rankings as one of the best films of 2013!

Divergent

Too complicated to be filmed (I haven't read the book mind), but overall an entertaining movie if you managed to discount the glaring plot hole and baffling faction systems (probably they describe it better in the book). The fight / action sequence is done amateurish, I don't see a well trained lethal dauntless, just teenies with chopsocky fighting abilities.

Hans Zimmer kinda make the movie endurable and gets a decent new age songs on the background (waiting for it to disgustingly appear on the pirate bay) - was it his songs? or he's just the overseer? I recall reading something - x as the music man?

oh well... 6/10

Captain America: The Winter Soldier

I'm a bit of a comic geek so I love these type of films, but have to admit they've been a bit 'bland' since The Avengers. Thankfully Captain America isn't. The film isn't all 'superhero' focused, it actually has a half decent conspiracy theory thrown into the mix, nice additions to the cast from Redford & Grillo and better performances from the usual personnel. There will be dramatic changes to the MCU judging by the end of this movie – and it could well breathe a breath of fresh air to the series.

Overall I’d say this is on par with the original Iron Man – 8/10

The Verdict - Towering performance by Paul Newman in an adroitly directed and understated courtroom drama. The way Newman expressed the frailty, sadness and doubtfulness of his character in every scene was brilliant. Good turns from Jack Warden, James Mason and Charlotte Rampling too (she's one beautiful woman), and of course Sidney Lumet who's one hell of a director.

300 Rise of an Empire
Didn't think I'd enjoy this but was pleasantly surprised. Gets going quicker than the first and has some really good action sequences. The lead guy did a great job. Plus, you get to see Eva Green's tits in an amazing sex scene! 7.5/10

Need For Speed
Once you get past the inevitable Jesse Pinkman thing, this film becomes really enjoyable. Of course, its a switch your brains off affair, but the action sequences are amazing and the car stunts look absolutely stunning, it really makes you feel like you are in the movie. Action and car fanatics, who love Fast and Furious (like myself) franchise will lap it up and it gives us something to occupy ourselves until F&F7. The only niggling thing is that as good as Aaron Paul and Dominic Cooper are, the lead female (Imogen Poots) is so bloody inconsistent and annoying, it resally brings the film down 7/10

Remake of 13 Beloved (thai), I posted the trailer for this on 'movies i want to see' thread and didnt think this will be too good. The film however, was surprisingly a really good low budget thriller. The film borrows elements from other thrillers but you can look past that because the performance from the lead is really gripping. Ron Pearlman also does a decent job. Has a couple of nice twists and the pacing of the film is incredible, you never get bored 7.5/10
 
The Book Thief was decent but it was like the We Didn't Start The Fire of Nazi Germany, they made sure you got all the hits. Not sure how much of the story they cut out but it seemed like certain storylines didn't go anywhere, like she didn't face any actual consequences for the aul book thieving.

Also
ending on a "person dies in the middle of saying I love you" AND "this person we thought was dead for ages just walked in the door!" really had me rolling my eyes.

301: Rise of an Empire I'm going to ignore that the movie bastardized history because there's no point in going over that. It is exactly what I expected: one long, stylized fight sequence with little plot and awful writing. I really don't like Lena Heady. It doesn't help that she's banging on about freedom as the queen of Sparta, where the helots outnumbered the Spartans. The characters are all cardboard cutouts. Sea cavalry, a sex-fight scene, Xerxes. It's all so pointless.

The lead guy is also a bland beige block of awfulness who can't decide if he wants to be Australian or not. It is at least exactly what it says on the tin.

47 Ronin on the other hand, has absolutely no idea what it wants to be. Part of it wants to be 300. Part of it wants to be The Last Airbender and only a very small part of it wants to be a serious Samurai movie. This is the part of it that's actually quite good. Unfortunately, the other two parts hold it under the duvet and fart on it's head until it gives up.
 
Kung Fu Panda - I wish they'd have used the animation in the opening for the entire film. It's all very well crafted and all but...where's the adventure? the passion? It just seems that most of the recent animated films like this are too obsessed with "witty quips" and the visuals. It's all very unimaginative.

The Ring Two - Terrible on every possible and unpossible level.

Oh talking about animation films, have you seen the two Cloudy with a chance of meatballs films? Surprisingly good I thought. Dragons was also excellent!
 
I really needed something to occupy my mind so I thought, what better way than watching a David Lynch movie?

Blue Velvet. Haven't seen it in years and I just love it, the main character's ambiguity, the contrasts of bright and dark, the music (as usual with Badalamenti). 8/10

Hangover watch with some friends. One person put it on and no one had the energy to do anything about it so we commented on it's awfulness instead which is always fun to do when you're hungover. We also saw Battle Royale which I've already seen but a long time ago. I still think it's a terrific film and I knew who Takeshi Kitano is this time around...oh and we saw an episode of Clifford the fecking Big Red Dog which was an even bigger horror to be exposed to.

I haven't but the title annoys me, deeply. How to Train Your Dragon was excellent, aye.

So true! :lol: Thought it had to be something like that, I was surprised to read you'd watched that.

Oh yeah, How to train your dragon, Dragons was the French title! Give Cloudy Atlas with a chance of an annoying title a go, you might be surprised! Though the 'adventure' part you talk about (and I agree with you) is more present in How to train your dragon, it's quite funny and very original, I thought. Watched the second one last night, full of references and quite good as well.
 
Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs is a very good hungover film I thought. Probably so in a normal state of mind too, but I wouldn't know. The same writers as The Lego movie.

I also just watched the first new Muppets film (the one with Jason Seigel, who I generally don't like) and also thought it was good. They judged the tone perfectly. Also makes a huge difference to have someone like Bret McKenzie do the songs rather than some Disney hack.

Ah yeah I can understand that. It's pretty bonkers, so watching it in a semi comatose state must make for interesting viewing. Don't know if you've seen the second one, but it's just as silly with pun after pun, so it might serve the same purpose well!

Gomorrah - I thought this was gonna be more about insides of the mafia world but it was just a few offspring stories, with some of them being totally uninteresting. It looked great and all but the gritty realism wasn''t enough...and Toni Servillo wasn't in it far enough.
