Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

When I first saw the Clouzot film I was surprised by how gripping it was. Ice Cold in Alex covers similar ground, using an ambulance and does the whole bonding through adversity thing really well. The early village stuff in Sorcerer i really like and you can almost feel the dirt and sweat rubbing off on you but by the time it gets to the trucks it doesn't move me and I just feel I have seen it all before. Had I seen Sorcerer first I can imagine feeling differently.

The thing I love most about Moon is the set design, it has a great atmosphere too. The only thing I'd say against it is that it's the kind of idea that Rod Serling would (and did) do in a third of the ruinning time. By the end I felt it had run out of story. Overall I really liked it though.

Godzilla (2014)

A very underwhelming film, but quite enjoyed this. Has a marked deviation from the formula of previous films which was a bit refreshing, though leaves you with a vaguely 'unfinished' sense in the climax. The spcial effects were quite good, though we do not see enough of the Godzilla, imo. Overall a well made movie that fulfills its primary purpose...to entertain.

Shite cast though. The hero has a singular expression throughout the movie and does not inspire any heroism or bravery or any emotion for that matter. Ken Watanabe has done a decent job, but the rest of characters are totally forgettable. With good lead characters, this could have been so much better!

If you have not seen the movie, do not open....

- Never expected Godzilla to be the 'good guy' here. Godzilla breating fire? Is this a dragon variant now? Rather than just a pre-historic monster, they have added a bit of mythology to this. Not sure if I like the fire breathing. Awesome to see definitely.
- There was some explanation of MUTO surviving by remaining close to earth's radiation core. For so many years, are they immortal then? How did Godzilla survive? It just comes out, fights the MUTO's and then heads back undersea? Very convenienet, I should say.
- A nuke explodes right outside SF bay and no reactions? Just looks like a normal disaster and the radioactive elements are conveniently forgotten!

Is Godzilla worth seeing?

I live in a small town so have no one to go with...Worth it to go see it alone?

Definitely is.

After more thought about Godzilla I'd say that even under the smallest inspection the movie falls apart which means for me it has to be below a 5.

Cloverfield >>> Godzilla (2014)

I rather enjoyed Pacific Rim and Oblivion, and love Moon... what does this mean for Godzilla? Who knows... but I was a big fan of Monsters too, so I am looking forward to seeing it.

The Google Advert:
Aka, the internship.

A big long advert for Google. Occasionally mildly amusing with some self-aware gags but I was only carried through the film by the charm of Wilson and Vaughn.

The Gold Rush:
I couldn't help but have big expectations for this film as it has a great reputation, therefore I couldn't help but compare it to the (in my opinion) vastly superior Modern Times, which is a shame because it was a decent film in its own right. I liked the Oceana Roll dance, and the dance at the bar with the Dog was very good as well as some of the capers in the shack. Worth it if you like your old movies, but for me, it's not quite as great as it's made out to be.

47 Ronin:

I thought it was average, but it could have been so much more. The story in itself is worthy of a film but it felt a bit soulless. It's about time Keanu went back to his roots and did Bill & Ted 3.

They finished writing it at the end of last year and Keanu said they were looking for funds to get it into production. No word since that though, so who knows what the current status of it is.

The Hobbit - An Unexpected Journey

It was at the point where Bilbo and Smeagol's riddle game reached the fourth round of questions that I realised something about The Hobbit; it's seriously padded out. The reciting of Misty Mountains near the beginning as its own scene, set within the dark and peaceful walls of Bilbo's home, rather than just being used as background noise for one of the many swooping panoramic shots of New Zealand, should have given me my first warning. But it was just the start of the movie and I was willing to believe that this was merely to introduce new people to a wonderful melody - an argument that falls to pieces after the fiftieth time when the song is played over swooping panoramic shots of New Zealand.
Seriously, the first Hobbit film has more filler in it than the entire LotR trilogy's extended directors cut editions, which have a combined length of around seventeen years. In order to have enough material for a forced trilogy it has to take, arguably, Tolkien's best work and turn it into three hours of;

"I don't trust you. Why should I trust you? I should trust you! But I still don't trust you. So why should I trust you? OH LOOK, EAGLES!. And now I trust you."

But it has a dragon in it, and dragons are cool.

7.5/10

Well, the first one doesn't even have a Dragon for a kicker...

I enjyoed the first one at the time - but I've never gone back to watch it.... where as I've gone back to watch all the LOTR countless times, and even watched Desolation (which I think puts the first one to shame really) twice... so yeah, where as I used to think it was pretty good, I was probably wrong in hindsight.

Full disclosure: I have not seen Godzilla yet but am predisposed to liking dumb movies about giant monsters, however:

The movie about the giant monster doesn't hold up under close inspection/has plot holes? Oh stop the goddamn presses! Has Obama been briefed on this??

I can't speak for everyone but it's more about the lack of screentime given to Godzilla is what I'm peeved about. You can make a dumb monster film with plotholes, and people would lap it up if it was not so dull.

Locke
Amazing minimalist film with a great performance by Tom Hardy. shows how you can make an entertaining film without throwing money at special effects and non-sense, but just concentrating on a good idea, a good script narrative excellently directed with pure finesse. Against Spiderman's £200m+ budget, this probably had a tenth of that but 10 times more engrossing 8/10

Trying to get a copy of this for while now, can't find a torrent!! Thanks for the review

Again it could be garbage for all I know but I mean the shark is barely in Jaws but people still get jazzed when it starts fecking shit up.

End Of Watch:

I don't think anyone has reviewed this as yet, not usually a fan of Jake Gyllenhall, but very much enjoyed his role here. But its more than just his performance its the cinematography that makes this a must watch, shot on hand held cameras giving it a very realistic feeling, like your along for the ride with LAPD's finest!

Excellent script, good performances from the two leads and the camera work is what makes it!

I'd give it 7.5/10

@Edgar Allan Pillow

In reply to your spoilered bit....

Godzilla has always had his atomic breath, its his signature weapon, its nothing new, theres no added mythology or dragon involved, you only ever seen the 1998 abomination? ;)

I just saw a trailer for a new Adam Sandler film and now want to poke out my eyes with a blunt pencil. Who watches this shite?

I rewatched the Kill Bill films last night and found myself FF'ing through the really slow, dull scenes of pointless dialogue...of which there were many. How does he get away with the same shit every time? The exploitation films of which he is such a fan never had lots of boring exposition in them. He's just showing off.

watched the lego movie last night!

Man that movie is crazy!! Like being on a binge of acid and speed!!! :nervous:

All in all its good movie, some good one liners in it and its very well done with a nice twist at the end!

It's about time Keanu went back to his roots and did Bill & Ted 3.

Found this online.

Reeves revealed that the script for Bill and Ted 3 is written, but needs to scale back on the CGI in order to fit the available budget.

He added that the time-travelling elements of the storyline will need rewriting.

‘The script is funny and there’s a story to tell there, [but] it needs to be adapted because right now it would cost, you know, $400million to make’ he told Access Hollywood.

‘There’s a rift in the universe and there’s all sorts of creatures. [And CGI], it ain’t cheap!’

The 47 Ronin star recently praised working on the first two Bill and Ted films.

‘I love those characters. I love the spirit of the film. I like the eternal goodness of these characters’ he said.

‘I always thought of them as beautiful fools. They bring a wonder and naivete to the harsh realities of the world.

‘I found them fun to play, and also working with Alex Winter was a great experience. We shared the same view of these characters and the film, and we had a lot of laughs making those movies. And Alex and I are friends.’

I want them to do it, yet I don't want them to do it.

He's the Game of Thrones of cinema.

it would understandably be the last thing you’d want to do right now, but it’s definitely worth at some point giving the original 50s wages of fear a watch if you haven’t already. i generally view it as only ever being a good thing when you get multiple versions of a great original idea, but it’s still hard to see why anyone would bother remaking that film. i think the first half of the 50s adaptation is just as good as its action filled second - it brings that environment completely to life. the characters don’t even need backstories or to be particularly deep, because everything is a product of that time & place. because of how well that setting feels drawn, the characters are made compelling & believable just by existing within it. black and white is perfect for it, it really does seem like you can feel the heat, the desperation. it does have that slightly kooky 50s feel in places, but even then it seems better for it! and thanks to lines like: “wherever there’s oil, there’s always americans," it's still a fun watch today.

Yeah I probably will at some point. Does it contain the
bridge
scene? And how does it compare if so?

The Kill Bill's are just bad movies...
The first one was pretty good but the entire plot was lifted from the film Lady Snowblood, which I enjoyed more than Kill Bill.

The second one should never have happened but he's seemingly untouchable in Hollywood.

@Eboue I know you're a fan of Cloud Atlas, have you read the book? Is it worth reading once I've already seen the film?
I like that Eboue likes Cloud Atlas.

I should have been clearer, the first one is an alright to decent movie, that gets less appealing on rewatches... the second one is a god-awful movie... so overall it balances out as bad.

The second one in particular - from what I remember - is rammed with poor acting, poor storytelling and ridiculous plot contrivances... I don't recall the dialogue being all that good either.

Whats Eating Gilbert Grape

Watched this on Sunday evening, I was very surprised at how much I enjoyed this movie.

It pulls on the heart strings a bit with some incredible performances from Depp, Julliette Lewis, but Leonardo Di Caprio steals the show here with an incredible performance as younger disabled brother. No idea how he didn't get the oscar here for this!

Plot: Gilbert (Depp) has to care for his brother Arnie (Di Caprio) and his obese mother, which gets in the way when love walks into his life

Some great supporting cast as well to be found, John C Reilly, Mary Steenburgen & Crispin Glover.

All in all a great watch for a lazy Sunday evening!

Out of the furnace

Powerful film with great performances all around, even from Casey Affleck which I usually not really rate. Woody Harrelson in particular was great as the bad guy. 7.5/10

Haven't posted here in a while. Here are my one line reviews of some of the oscar nominees of last year.

12 years a slave - everyone here in the US loved the movie. I think it was more due to you know all the guilt. Chiwetel was alright but Fassbender was the real star. Cumberbatch was average.

American Hustle - I was so looking forward to this movie but fell asleep in the theater after an hour. Maybe I was just tired.

Gravity - didn't watch it in 3D. Boring.

Wolf of Wall Street - Why was this movie so looonng? Would have been way more entertaining had it been an hour shorter. Leonardo was actually quite good for most of it.

Her - Movie of the year. Had no expectations. Didn't even want to watch it but it was brilliant for the most part. Phoenix was excellent. I dont know how Jonze managed to pull off the sex scene without making it seem really really awkward.
