Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Locke- One of the best movies of 2014, Tom Hardy with an excellent performance. 9/10
 It's about a guy talking on the phone in his car for 1.5 hours. It's literally just that. I can't understand how anyone can think this is a good film, let alone one of the best of 2014.

That's exactly why it's brilliant. I was engaged and interested from the very first scene, the acting and script is feckin amazing. But sure look, not everybody's cup of tea I suppose. I did not like Under my skin, yet most people seem to enjoy it.

Who doesn't like 70 minutes of exposition on concrete pumping pressure delivered via an unconvincing Anthony Hopkins impression?

Rurouni Kenshin : The Legend End (2014)

The last part of the Samurai X trilogy, not very true to the manga and anime, but a masterpiece nevertheless. The swordfight are one of the best I've seen in Cinema, and they really capture the character from the Anime.

9/10

I haven't seen it but someone who often has decent taste in films though it was brilliant.

It was good, especially for such a movie, but it wasn't anything special. If he wasn't driving BMW X5 I don't think I would like it tbf.

The narratives from the various conversations he has is more interesting than many other films and blockbusters. It was a great film.

Well, for a film that is taking place inside of a car for the whole film it isn't completely horrible. But from not completely horrible to brilliant is quite a leap.

To be fair, by the 3rd painfully obvious concrete metaphor, it was at least unintentionally amusing.

They missed a trick by not using the tagline "Life is like a block of concrete, you never know when it's gonna set"

Saw the Evil Dead remake:

Typical modern horror in the fact that it wasn't scary, but was full of gore. The original films had a bit of humour about them and the odd scare. This has a gritty darker tone from the start and it's not as enjoyable as a result.
Decent effort as far as most remakes/re-imaginings go, but I wouldn't go out of my way to watch it.

Definitely using that line some time.

Sharknado 2

I put this on 5 minutes ago because I saw it on TV. A twister seems to be bringing sharks into cities. For some reason, there is no fish, octopus, whales, or Michael Phelps. They also seemed to be called Sharknados, as opposed to sharks. There is now a weather lady talking about the concentration of sharks as I speak. 2 sharks an hour, she's said. Why are people outside? Some guy is making an inspirational speech with a chainsaw in his hand, because sharks are scary. He has just cut open a shark going through the air with said chainsaw in dramatic slow motion.

11/10

Was a bit disappointed by American Sniper last night. Not sure what else I expected, perhaps they could have done a bit more to show how good a sniper he was meant to be.

"The" shot, that I remember reading about when his book come out was out of this world, and they made it look like a scene from Wanted with James macavoy.

The ending was abrupt and i thought thry would have given more attention to it but I'm guessing that was deliberate.

Not the worst film I've seen, just wanted and expected more from the trailer and what I know of Chris Kyle's story.

6.5

Seems like I'm the only person that wasn't too impressed with Whiplash. It had its good moments but I don't know, I just expected more of a story to it.

What We Did on Our Holiday (2014)

Nice little feel good movie. Follows the story of a family as they deal with typical bollocks of life, while trying to organize a last birthday party for the soon to be dead patriarch of the family. But feck it, him and his grandsons had different plans.

7.5/10

None of them are as good as Sharknado 2, though.

Whiplash - Heard great things so naturally thought it be a let down but far from it. The tension between Miles Teller and JK Simmons was brilliant throughout and those drum scenes were just simply gorgeous. 9/10

Watched that with my fam at about 1am Christmas Day. Best Christmas ever.

Inherent Vice - Torn. I find it hard to make my mind up about PTA's films until a second watch, but still, I was mildly disappointed. Was funny, but not as fun as I hoping for. Looked great, but not quite as visually impressive as his last few films. My main complaint is that it felt one of those book adaptations that's just too slavishly devoted to the text, ticking through plot points and characters rather than trying to create a coherent and cinematic film experience. I get that the whole throwing in/out characters and plotlines is part of the plan, and supposed to get you in the heads of the characters (and experience Pynchon's writing style), but I don't think it works as well in a film as it does in a book - especially the overly descriptive narrator. I'm ranting a bit, but essentially, I really enjoyed it, but was still hoping for slightly more. The Big Lebowski's much better.

Birdman
Wow what a film. Absolutely loved it. It was like being in a theatre play. Edward Norton was also incredible 9/10

John Wick
Keanu Reeves used correctly! This is exactly what you want from a revenge flick. Minimum plot maximum action 8/10

Devoured
I thought this was a relatively decent film considering the state of horror films today. A slow build but the suspense moments were done right. Thought the 'twist' was a bit obvious though and I was expecting it about mid way in. Also, the opening scene took a lot away from the film 6.5/10

Ouija
This is what is wrong with horror films these days. Cliche and cliche with no characters that are developed and minimal scares. The first 20 mins were ok then it just turned daft.Boring. Avoid 3/10

The Watch
Had one ot two funny moments but caters to low-brow humour addicts 4/10

John Wick is really stupid, but it's made superbly. It's like the Pacific Rim of action reveange flicks.

Erm... did you not see Tom Hardy's big wooly jumper/shirt combo?

It was a big dumb gunfest, but it knew it and was strangely enjoyable, even if some of the action looked a bit shit.

I liked it. The fact that they made his character mysterious for the first 25 minutes or so, until the baddie was like "He did that to John Wick, shit!"

I like the way they manipulated my girlfriend into cooing over all the puppy scenes. You could almost sense it was going to get it! She was devastated.

 same (with regards to the spoilered bit!)

 No-one walked out of mine, but weirdly some-one walked in, an hour into the film. No idea what they thought was going on.

Maybe he'd seen the first hour before but bailed and was told it gets better or maybe something came up urgent. I watched the first hour of The Raid 2 and the cinema screwed up so I watched it again the following week but of course, I came in about 40 mins into the film.

Inherent Vice has just shot to the top of my list of things to see now

Will go and see it this afternoon.

Ex Machina - Really enjoyed this, good story and visually. 9/10

The Gambler - Nothing special but was pretty entertaining, thought Wahlberg was good too. 7/10

Bunny Lake Is Missing (1965) - Never has a film shit the bed more in the last half hour. The first 80 minutes are pretty great though.
The big reveal itself is fine. Or at least the who and how of the reveal are fine. The why is just atrocious. They should have just stopped short with creepy incestuous brother doesn't want to share the sister with anyone. But they have to go and make him a completely deranged lunatic as well

Just look at this shit

Still, it deserves an extra mark for this unfortunate exchange:

-"Bloody pervert if you ask me..."
-"Please, Andrews, he works for the BBC".
