Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

I walked out of Legends of The Fall and Face/Off - only 2 films I couldn't get through and I've seen some shit.

Never walked out of a film at the cinema. If I pay for it, I'll watch paint dry for 2 hours in the hope it gets better.

How could you walk out of Face/Off? As ludicrous as it is, it's at least entertaining.

I have been tempted a couple of times, but never actually walked. Wagons East almost got me out the door.

I hated it. So stupid it made me angry. With the 2 worst mainstream actors in living memory. The missus hated it even more. We walked.

I sat through Lucy, Divergent and Transformers 4 in the last year alone... I never walk out of a film - to the point where it borders on self-harming.

To be fair, when you purchased the ticket you knew it had Alessandro Nivola and Nick Cassavetes in the film. I'd imagine you also knew it was about face swapping!

It falls into the so-bad-it's-good category for me along with Con Air. Love him or hate him, Cage is gonna Cage.

But Con Air was fun despite the silliness. I even watched all of Armageddon. True Lies was dumb as a bag of rocks but enjoyable. Face/Off made me want to go postal.

The worse thing is we got outside and the missus had left her handbag inside and she made me sneak back in for it.

Oh no, it's bringing back all sorts of memories for Wibble.

Armageddon is classic. Buscemi's heartbreaking portrayal of a man suffering from Space Dementia was Oscar worthy.

Those kind of things depend when you watch them. I remember loving Face/Off as a teen, but I'm sure if it came out now I'd think it was bollocks. I saw Big Trouble In Little China recently, and thought it was literally one of the worst famous films I'd ever seen (it's spectacularly amateur) but had I been of the age in the 80s, I probably would've loved it.

There's nothing worse than watching a film you used to love and realising it's awful. Having said that, I watched Big Trouble In Little China quite recently and still enjoyed it. There's something about it that oozes a corny charm. I guess it helps that I knew what to expect and I always enjoyed Russell's brash Jack Burton character.

You better not be talking about the legendary Cage. Best actor of our time mate. Best human being of our time.

Let me guess, the movie was so bad you had to shit, and the handbag situation was ideal.

Russell's cool. He basically carries it. Without him the lines are almost unanimously awful.

Love that film , not seen it for a while , but without Russell the film would be unwatchable

"This is Jack Burton in the Pork Chop Express, and I'm talkin' to whoever's listenin' out there."

I honestly don't think you'd find anything unwatchable. Is there a film that you haven't been able to sit through?

I'll have to watch it again now. I also still need to re-watch Wild Things.

Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist

Michael Cera plays a gawky hipster (I know, right?) who is hung up on his promiscuous ex. He gets over her by getting it on with some girl who is equally as hip as he is. Somehow they stretch it out to an hour and a half. It was okay.

Boyz N The Hood

I love a good hood film, and I'd somehow never seen this. Every time I've seen Ice Cube in a film, he has been just awful, but he was pretty good in this. The whole film is essentially Ice Cube sitting on his stoop threatening people, whilst Cuba Gooding Jr does his best to stay out of trouble because his dad is a young Laurence Fishburn, and he's straight badass. Great film.

Detachment

A substitute teacher gets a gig in a city high school in Queens NY, which is rough as shit. He builds relationships with a few people from within and outside the school, all of whom are in difficult situations in their lives, and those situations seem to worsen as the film goes on. It was a pretty good film, but quite harrowing and just plain grim. There's not really a single happy moment in this film. It sometimes seems like it is leading to a happy moment, but then it just gutpunches you. A good, horrible film. Really well put together, but when it finished, I couldn't feel feelings anymore. feck this film.

I walked out of The Grand Budapest Hotel, went for a piss and then walked back in and enjoyed the rest of the film

The screen they were using for Inherent Vice was tiny. I've set up film viewings as big in my old flat ffs. No one walked out, but the room was only had a few weird looking people who I assume knew what they were in for. The film kept going different directions all the time and I found hard to really care about anyone other than doc as barely anyone else was on the screen for more than 2 minutes. I assume that will change with further watches though. Just about everything they did was done well. I think I would have found it funnier if I hadn't seen the trailer.

Inherent Vice - Really don't see what prompted all of the walkouts. Quite enjoyed the film myself without it being anything special or groundbreaking it was entertaining and funnier than I was expecting it to be. I will admit to there being a bit of mumbled dialogue here and there but it was easy enough to put 2+2 together to figure out what was going on if I'd missed a line or two. I'd give it a solid 7/10

Short Term 12: About a young woman who basically runs a facility for fecked-up youths. Realistic but not a depressing drainer and Brie Larson is really good in it.

Immitation Game

Boring, yawn.... people will slag me for this, but I think Cumberbatch acting is OTT and doesn't look natural to me, although he'll probably got an Oscar nomination for that. It's hard picturing him as an annoying Turing, although the gay part packs a punch (haven't read about him, and going to the cinema clueless probably does that). Not a bad movie, but seems overrated to me. I'm not an expert on Asperger, but he does looks overacting to me.

7/10

Everly
An action/thriller centered on a woman who faces down assassins sent by her ex, a mob boss, while holed up in her apartment (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1945084/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1) Entertaining, and Salma's rack is still one hell of a rack. It's a great noir/Bgrade popcorn movie. Oh.. and some artistic torture scene involving acids and contraption... and have I mentioned Salma Hayek?

5/10 for actual movie, 9/10 for entertainment

Watched All is lost last night, really enjoyed it. Hardly any dialogue throughout, just the story of the solitary sailor played by Robert Redford who encounters difficulties (to say the least) when navigating in the Indian Ocean (I think). It's the story of his efforts to survive against all odds, directed by J. C. Chandor (Margin Call, A Most Violent Year), who is fast becoming one of my favourite directors. Very easy to watch and gripping, keeps you on the edge of your seat most of the time and is a pretty compelling story. Might not be everyone's cup of tea due to the lack of dialogue, but if you're not bothered by that, I'd definitely recommend it.

Stephen King's: A Good Marriage
A film about a woman who finds out that her husband of 25 years is actually a serial killer. I liked how they revealed the husband's dark side straight away and wasn't the usual fair of husband running around trying to kill her but more about the implications revealing this news would have on their kids and community but the problem was that this also meant the entire film was completely anti-climatic once they reveal the husband as the killer and the end was very rushed. I usually love Stephen King based films but this wasn't very good 4.5/10

I saw Con Air last night for the first time since I first saw it. Couple of things; 1. It's still awesome... and 2. Dave Chappelle is now in it, which was a nice touch.
