Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Monsters: Dark Continent

Ten years on from the events of Monsters, and the 'Infected Zones' have now spread worldwide. In the Middle East a new insurgency has begun. At the same time there has also been a proliferation of Monsters in that region. The Army decide to draft in more numbers to help deal with this insurgency.
I feel cheated, I was expect a sci-fi / horror film about monsters from space, it was neither , it was just a sodding war film with some monsters thrown in and it was not a very good war film .
The only good thing about the film was The monsters looked great! To bad they were overwhelmingly used as backdrop props, the film could've been done with no monsters and the money spent on making the film better.
Take the monsters out of it and it could've easily been about the war against ISIS or the war in Iraq.
It failed has a Sci-fi film and has a war film.

3/10

Predestination - Just mad. Absolutely mad. Takes insane sci-fi paradoxes to the next level, when you don't think it can do the obvious twist again, it actually surprises and does indeed do the obvious twist again...somehow. It's short too, or at least felt it, so that works in it's favour.

Theory of Everything - Redmayne, yeah brilliant, embodies the man. Barely even looked up Hawkings life or history prior illness hit properly and I felt Redmayne was him somehow despite that, remarkable. Jones is every bit his equal in a obviously less physically challenging role. The story is all baity and everything, but a decent biopic love story that ignores most of the science to confuse anyone. Good to see Franky Lebeouf again.

I rarely watch movies, but Book of Eli is definitely a movie worth watching. One of the best movies I've watched.

I guess the plot sounds a bit boring though, it's a post-apocalyptic movie following a man on his journey across the US with the last remaining Bible.

Trust me, it's not boring. I think most would enjoy it.

Yeah... You definitely need to watch more films.

Book of Eli is alright, though.

Haha saying that it's one of the best movies I have ever watched was maybe an exaggeration, but whenever I think of movies to recommend, I think of that one (maybe because it's not so known?)

Anyway, I hate watching movies, so I will definitely not watch a lot more films :smirk:

Is that you Michael?

The Tale of the Princess Kaguya

After seeing the reviews, I have to say I was underwhelmed. The first 15 minutes or so were tough to get through. It kicked on after that, but not enough. The story was nicely told and very easy on the eyes, however. 6/10

Laid to Rest

A story of a young girl who wakes up in a casket with a traumatic head injury and no memory of her identity. She quickly realizes she was abducted by a Deranged Serial Murderer.
The film delivers big on gore and blood, there is plenty of killing and they are gruesome, faces and heads sliced and chopped and one killing that melts a head, but that it.
The actual film is pretty bad, basic slasher flick story, with some bad acting and a dreadful ending.
If you like blood and gore , then this is the film for you, but if you dont then dont bother.

4/10 (all for the gore)

The Waters of Echo's Pond

Nine friends take a holiday at a Victorian home on a private island and uncover a game that when played brings out the worst in each of them. Jealously, greed, hatred, lust, all of the things they keep buried deep inside themselves rise to the surface and come to a boil.
It was better than I thought it would be, again another gory slasher film this time with the devil calling the shots
When its scary, its actually scary, featuring atmospheric scenes that build tension very well
When its funny, its actually funny, perhaps because of the contrast with the serious scenes, and actually handles the switch very well this film isn't for everyone - it's very weird.

The Rover
Had seen mixed reviews so was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed this. Really atmospheric, beautifully shot and an utterly compelling central performance from Guy Pearce. I also thought Robert Pattinson (yeah, him) was excellent. It's incredibly bleak and not very much happens but I was gripped throughout and genuinely moved by the closing scenes. Well worth a watch.

Cocaine Cowboys
A documentary on the cocaine wars in Miami in the 80s (with a soundtrack by who else but Jan Hammer himself!) The whole thing revolved around lengthy interviews with the three main protagonists. A couple of American drug runners and a Colombian enforcer. All three of them were more charismatic than most movie stars and full of ripping yarns about the craziness of the era. Really enjoyable documentary, which reminded me a bit of The House I Live In because of the way it shone a light on the sheer futility of the "War on Drugs". Turns out a roaring trade in illegal narcotics is the best thing that can happen to a regional economy. Who'd have thunk it?

Housebound
A woman is put in house arrest at her family home and to make matters worse, there seems to be a supernatural being in the vicinity. A horror comedy from New Zealand and was really really good. Was really funny when it concentrated on the humour (especially her parole officer) and was scary when it wanted to be. The balance was spot on and I really enjoyed it. This is the second horror comedy I have seen from New Zealand, the other being What We Do In The Shadows and both were awesome. I guess I share the Kiwi sense of humour 8.5/10

Let Us Prey
A rookie police officer and her colleagues encounter a man who brings out the inner darkness they are hiding. Shot and lit extremely well, this Scottish horror/thriller was pretty enjoyable. The story was intriguing and the mystery surrounding the characters were spread out well. Gory in places really tense overall. The director really draws you in with the empty feeling he creates with each scene. Well worth a watch 8/10

I really need to see The Rover. The reviews put me off because I didn't want to be disappointed by Michod. He's our countries most promising talent.

A Most Violent Year (2014)

Llewyn Davis doing his best to incarnate Al Pacino. Disappointment movie overall. Not boring, but i was expecting something much better.

Wild Tales - Great fun. 6 stories that are, for the most part, gripping, ludicrous, funny and - most importantly - really well told.

John Wick

Fairly tumescent stylised action/revenge thriller with Keanu Reeves starring as a wronged ex-hitman coming back to avenge, taking on the caricature packed Russian mob.The plot is risibly thin. Keanu looks cool but the frequent fight sequences are so-and-so and I was dying for it to end for the last 20 or so minutes.
4/10 if I'm generous. Feck knows how it got 83% on rottentomatoes.

It Follows - 8/10 Pretty good horror movie although I found it to be more of a thriller than scary..I didn't really jump or was all that afraid while watching....I enjoyed the whole idea of the film..it certainly was a different take on the genre...decent acting throughout...well worth the time and money.

Foxcatcher

Too slow paced for my liking and the first hour or so was just too boring. 5/10
