Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

There are unusually high standards (compared to the general public) in this thread, and I think that's a good thing. And as far as I can tell, the good critics have praised some of the performances and the production values as opposed to the story.
Yeah, we got some true experts in this place.

I'm looking at it's rotten tomatoes now and a glance at the sidebar reveals at Avengers: Age of Ultron and Fast and the Furious 7 have a higher rating, neither of those was exactly great. Age of Ultron in particular was a bit shit.

Sicario - a great film from top to bottom. Villeneuve is the master of tension, Deakins the master of light and the cast are uniformly brilliant. I don't know how Benicio del Toro doesn't get higher profile work. Go see it. Blade Runner is in safe hands.

Good to hear, I have high hopes for this film.

Also, concerning Prometheus, I summon @Mockney so he can share his love for the film.

It's a great looking film man. 8/10 for style/aesthetics/atmosphere. Problem is not everyone everyone cares about how films look and feel. Only myself and @Vato do, but we're artists.

Well, I guess the caf knows better than the thousands of people and critics who gave it a positive review on RT, imdb and Metacritic.
65/100 from exerts in metacritic. Same from people.
73% positive in RT, with an average rating of 6.9/10. 69% positive from people there, with an average rating of 3.5/5.
Even on imdb where the new movies are so overrated, it has a score of 7/10.

I wonder can you think of any films that are the inverse, with a great script but pretty ugly or boring visually?

Hmmm...that's an interesting question. I suspect there are loads. But I can't think of any at this moment.

Breaks my heart that they're remaking Blade Runner.

I haven't really sat down to watch Primer yet but I suspect it falls into this category, I have watched Darren Aronofsky's Pi (easily his best film for me) and I'd say it fits that description.

Any movie you'd be able to compare it to? How action-packed is it?

I'm confused. Are you saying those are the scores of a terrible film? I understand that a lot of people had very high expectations considering the hype when the first trailers came out but if you all think this film is terrible I can only assume you haven't seen many other films that are truly terrible or only watch masterpieces.

I've recently watched 2001 A space Odyssey and much preferred Prometheus to this overrated classic. I agree that it might have been visually stunning at the time but the plot and pacing are just horrendous. I'd rather watch an entertaining film with a few plotholes than one without but which bores me to death.

Not terrible but not great. Caf is harsher in rating though.

2001 is infinitely better than any sci fi made this century.

 Just seen this review of 2001 A Space Odyssey. It's my exact same view on this film. (contains spoilers)

I'm sorry, but this film was absolute trash. The people who rave about how it's "such a great piece of art" would look at a white sheet of paper and call that art because it "allows the viewer to create their own visualization of the nature of art" or something like that. NO. This movie lacked everything that any sane person would look for in a decent movie. See: plot, character development, storytelling, not being a general trip to hell laced with LSD and shrooms, and GOOD music. Don't get me wrong, I love the Blue Danube, but not when I have to watch a spaceship creep slowly towards a dock FOR 7 FREAKING MINUTES. This was just horrible. Here's a general synopsis (semi-spoilers):

Blackness More blackness Still more blackness Creepy chorus music (and still black) SUNRISE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! monkeys monkeys MONOLITH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! monkeys + monolith SUPER MONKEYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Spaceship spaceship spaceship Forced and failed character development spaceship spaceship same spaceship more spaceship Super secret government meeting about strange moon rectangle eons long trip to see strange rectangle MONOLITH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! more creepy chorus MY EARS!!!! THEY BLEED!!!!!! (loud high pitched screech) DIfferent spaceship spaceship spaceship spaceship running in a spaceship more running running running (is Forrest gump in this movie?) Totally useless exposition via newscaster Weird forced conversation with a computer find out something is wrong with a transmitter go to remove the broken part still going going still going are we there yet? Finally back Nothing is wrong with the part Super secret meeting between two crew members about maybe disconnecting the faulty computer (that the computer totally overhears) Computer kills everyone but Dave "I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that" Dave kills HAL ACID TRIP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Dave gets old in a weird room SPACE BABY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! DUN DUN DUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Seriously, that bolded part is so true.

 I completely agree.

I don't know if this is the right thread for it but here goes...

I've been trying to stream movies through the chromecast using Plex with an Internet connection of around 27mb. I don't know if others have had similar problems but the buffering is pretty horrific. Films stop and start etc. Just wondering if any of the film/tech efficienados have any idea how to improve this? Into ice you can alter the quality but don't know which would support my connection.

Despite my better judgement I watched the new Terminator last night.

My god some of the past efforts were bad but this one surely takes the title.

Pure unadulterated shite - and I like a good brain dead action flick now and again.

Even trying to actively ignore the massive gaping holes in the story line, I found it near unwatchable.

0/10

Scarface - I actually expected something better conisedering how much people praise this movie. It was quite illogical at times. The ending was ridiculous. You should never go full Chuck Norris in a serious movie. 7.5/10

Why do your ratings and reviews never match?

Liar Liar

Extremely funny film, loved every second of it and reminds me of how good Jim Carrey is when he brings his A game.

9/10

I appreciate that reviews are subjective, but have you considered that after giving, 90's Jim Carrey movie, Liar, Liar 9/10, you may have blown your wad a little early? I'm expecting a deluge of 10/10's in the coming month.

While You Were Sleeping - Had a flashback to my high school days. Remember watching a film in a school lab about this woman who falls in love with her fiance's best friend, or something along those lines. Never watched the whole film in class, and no idea why they picked that film to show us twelve year olds. Anyway, it took about forty minutes to find the right film, turn out it was this. So was it worth it? Yeah, I guess. Pretty enjoyable watch, although I did occasionally lose attention. All the characters were really likable. 6/10

Nolan's Following? That Man From Earth film?

I would honestly prefer spending 2 hours reading similar reviews than having to rewatch A Space Odyssey. And I'm being completely serious.

The fact you share this opinion with someone whose just given Liar Liar 9/10 should surely give you at least some pause for thought.
