Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Finally got round to Star Wars in the summer and really enjoyed episodes 4/5/6.
This week I got round to two of the prequels.

Phantom Menace

If the plan for this movie was to have a main cast of thoroughly detestable characters involved in mish-mash nonsensical action sequences then it succeeded with flying colours.

Who's idea was it to have Liam Neeson and Ewan Mcgregor as the main protagonists?
I can't think of a pair of more boring, charisma lacking, monotonous actors to be cast in such roles.
Natalie Portman is shit also but when has she ever been good in anything?
She usually ends up being in amazing films being overshadowed by better people, V (Hugo weaving), Black Swan (Mila Kunis).
Even in this film her shitness is overshadowed by others being shitter than her.

I'd never heard of Ahmed Best (Jar Jar Binks) and after seeing this character I understand why.

Then you've got the main antagonist Darth Maul, who's in the film for about 60 seconds and says about two things.
Way to build up a villain.
Not even C3P0 and R2/D2 could save this shambles.

4.5/10.

Attack of the Clones

Thankfully Liam Neeson isn't in this one but not to worry, there's a ready made boring, monotonous, replacement in Hayden Christensen (Anakin Skywalker) who might just be the worse actor in the entire franchise. He's good looking though but shit at everything else, facial expressions, timing, emotion etc.

Anyway, better than the previous one, less Jar Jar more C3P0. Thought the action sequences were a lot better and I enjoyed the droid/clone battle.

A few dumb things though like sending in bugs through a droid to assassinate padme, why not just put a gun on the droid to shoot her up?

6/10

Did you enjoy the love scenes on Naboo?

Brooklyn: The kind of movie that in praising you could end up inadvertently underselling and also the type of movie that I’d normally choose to watch at home as opposed to watching in the cinema (god only knows why as I’ve paid to watch some real dross over the years). Thankfully the choice to pay to watch this one was a choice well made. Beautifully well shot, well-acted throughout with a ring of authenticity running through it thanks to a well-constructed and understated script, this is the type of film that is hard to review without using the term charm as its just full of it.

In a way it feels a bit like a much more upmarket version of the kind of TV movie/series that might appear on ITV and be aimed mainly at the more mature Heatbeat crowd as it feels thoroughly old fashioned but not in a negative way, more in a way that has you wishing more movies were this well-constructed, understated and full of warmth. Engrossing throughout with a performance at its heart from Saoirse Ronan that really draws you in without the need to resort to melodrama this is an enjoyable watch that lags a little toward the end but not so much that I was ever anything less than full invested mainly thanks to a strong opening 2/3rds. Should work even better for most people of Irish decent than it did for me (as it deals mainly with the Irish diaspora/homesickness), but I still found myself caught up by its old fashioned charm and the beautifully understated performance at its heart from Saoirse Ronan. Its steady pace and lack of pizzazz isn’t going to be for everybody but for those with patience or those simply looking for a film that attempts to carry you gently along with it this should be a really enjoyable watch.

7.5/10

The Stanford Prison Experiment (2015): Well directed with some very good performances. Hard not to wonder what you would have done in the same situation as the students in this experiment. Unnerving to think that many of us don't know what we are capable of until we are put into a certain situation.

Not quite sure where to put this but I saw these 3 brilliant videos on youtube and wanted to share them:

Gyllenhaal deserved an Oscar for his performance. Also, it seems the way to be regarded as a great actor is by playing a manipulative sociopath/psychopath.

Steve Jobs - Superb. Quality performances from the entire cast and Sorkin's screenplay is as good as you would expect. For a film that consists purely of dialogue it absolutely flew by and I would rank it up there with The Social Network.

The Martian Undemanding, amusing and highly entertaining crowd pleaser. Ridley Scott's best film for some time. 8/10

Robin Hood Prince of Thieves:

This was a film that in my childhood I would watch pretty much every Saturday morning with my sister. I would like to offer a formal apology to my father for putting him through such torment.

 It real was terrible wasn't it? Alan Rickman seemed to have taken overacting lessons from Pacino and De Niro and then taken something in pill form. Kevin Costner didn't seem to have read the script or even a plot summary so wasn't even aware that it was set in England. And that fecking song is spawned.

So, just watched Apocalypse Now. Let's just say, I'm too afraid to write my review on here.

I won't lie, we rewatched some of his dialogue twice because it was just THAT good. The bit in the dungeons was acting at its very, very best. I think even he knew it was ridiculous dialogue based on his facial expressions, there was a point I kid you not that he did like a cringe smile after one terrible pun "hanging about". We watched that bit at least 3 times!

Burnt

I didn't expect too much from this film but was pleasantly surprised. I expected it to be very food heavy and a love story, but it was a lot more than that. There were a couple stories which didn't make sense or they didn't go into detail enough about which put me off. However, on the whole it was a solid 1 and half hours. I don't think I would recommend someone spending £10+ per ticket, but if you can get a 2-4-1 of have a cinema card it is worth a watch.

7/10

Ronaldo - Watched with my two boys last night, I thought it would bore the hell out of me but was intrigued by his unfolding story about what drives him. It was definitely worth the 90 minutes and my two boys loved it (they are aged 9 and 10).
7/10

You disliked it?
No, not exactly. The first two hours were great. But all I was waiting for was Sheen to meet Brando. And when it happened, it was all a bit underwhelming. I like it when part of the film is left open to speculation, feel like AN went slightly overboard in this regard. Not completely satisfied really. Going to watch the documentary on how it was made tonight.

Did you watch the original version or the Director's Cut?

Documentary is a brilliant watch. It's amazing the movie ever got finished. Enjoy!

Original version I think, it was 3 hours 15 minutes.

No, sounds like you watched the full extended Redux version. I know a couple of people who have seen that as their intro to Apocalypse Now and have hated it as a result. I think if you'd seen the original/shorter version first you might have come away with a better impression! It's a strangely paced film at the best of times, but the Redux puts in a lot of stuff that adds little in terms of narrative and really messes with the pacing imo so it's a much harder watch.

It's ok to hold that view, just means you're an awful human being. Just kidding

Apocalypse Now/Heart of Darkness: it's all about the journey, not the arrival (IMO).

Worse than Hitler. (not kidding at all - well maybe a bit)

And Redux should be deleted and we should never speak of it again.

It is a terrible thing when we realise something we loved as a kid was in fact utter shite. There was a western I LOVED as a kid. No idea what it was called now but they found a secret passage through a rock wall in the desert by being at a particular spot at a particular time and the shadows revealed the entrance or some such tosh. I suspect I would cringe significantly if I saw it now.

It was a huge hit in the USSR

You had me convinced until the last 3 words. The Social Network bored the arse off me.

Watched the sunset limited the other week.

Holy feck, great film, even if its just Tommy Lee Jones and Samuel L Jackson talking in a room for 90 minutes

Watched this last night. Superb. World class acting (especially by Fassbender). Choice of music is brilliant, visuals are beautiful. One of 2015's top movies in my opinion.

Still, wouldn't place it quite as high as The Social Network.

For the record, I think Godfather Part I and II are perfection, especially I.

The 'journey' in AN was GOAT-worthy, but the ending could and should have been better, especially considering that Coppola had years to think of something fitting. The fact that a lot of the closing scenes were improvised sort of explains why the ending didn't live up to expectations. The whole film feels set-up for the ending (only now I know that it was all about the journey), but to not have a solid script for it would always leave gaps. Brando's character reminded me of Varys from GoT ffs.

I loved the end. Summed up the pointlessness of the whole war, the way it was fought and this mission.
