The Spurs thread

Back to Tottenham - unbelievable capitulation, against a team with 10 men and nothing to play for. Just cannot believe it, and it wasn't even a narrow loss but a complete and utter thumping.

Having said that credit where it's due - they've had a great season playing some lovely football.

I Disagree. I certainly wasn't overly optimistic. Well for United, we spent money we earned and are still earning so don't see the problem there. Plenty of Arsenal fans crying that they don't spend enough.

IMO we certainly don't.

Everyone ruined their best chance at the Premier League for X years. Leicester won it.. so by default everyone who didn't could/should have done better. It was Bournemouth's best shot in 126 years! This line is being trotted out about Arsenal so much.. it's boring. It makes no sense.

At the end of the day, we finished 2nd. It's not what we wanted. But 5th (potentially, 6th) is not what United wanted. 4th is not what City wanted. Why are we the only team to get this 'best chance in _____' line? Because we're better than yous? It makes no sense, really.

It does. Everyone else has reasons for not mounting a title challenge.

Spurs started from a lower position and are still gelling.
City are in transition and saddled with a manager they are replacing in the summer.
United got Van gaaled and will/should also be looking for a new manager besides needing squad overhaul.
Chelsea sacked their manager because he was so poor. In transition.
So did we with Rodgers.

Arsenal are not in transition. They are a well settled side with the right age profile. They seemingly have the manager they want for the job, money enough to buy the players they want. Of all the sides, they should be the ones to seize the opportunity. So what's the reason they didn't? Same as every year:

Wenger really should be sacked. It is painfully obvious he can not take you further anymore.

@B20 Believe me, I agree. Which is why I don't see why people are saying that, in particular, WE missed out. Why did United miss out? LVG. Why did Chelsea miss out? José. Why did Arsenal miss out? Wenger's inability to set up a defence.

We were never going to win the league with this defence, so there was no opportunity missed. And I agree we won't win a league until Wenger leaves.. unless he signs a defender of absolute top, top quality or we recruit an attack so good that it simply negates our complete lack of nous at the other end of the pitch.

There's no point saying we're in the race when we're not. And any Arsenal fan who knows the team could see that we didn't recruit enough to win the title. We probably won't this Summer, either. Which is why the idea that we somehow missed out is baffling to me, because we have just as many problems that we didn't address as anybody else.

Anyway.. this is the Spurs thread.

Don't believe anything glaston is saying, the lad is hurting. It's absolutely killing him that sp*rs fecked this up in such a spectacularly crap fashion and finished below the mighty Arsenal.

I'm sure it is. I mean, we all know it's going to happen but nobody tells the Spurs lot until it's too late and they're left with egg on their face.

I think it's because of this.

"All champions since United’s Treble season of 1998-99, when they totalled 79 points, have amassed 80 or more. Thirteen of those have been with 85 points or higher, five with 90 or more. The average points total for the champions, since the Premier League went to 20 teams in 1995, is 85.7."

Arsenal under Wenger
05-06 67
06-07 68
07-08 83
08-09 72
09-10 75
10-11 68
11-12 70
12-13 73
13-14 79
14-15 75
15-16 71
Average of 72.8

Mourinho's full seasons at Chelsea for comparision.

06-07 83
13-14 82
14-15 87

Wenger just doesn't seem to be able to get the required points anymore and with Guardiola at City and Mourinho at United I think it will be hard for Arsenal with Wenger. Conte seems to be a good league manager too judging from his 3 years at Juve. This season was a really good chance for Arsenal and they should have taken it.
I think we've had a properly shit season, but this comparison is disingenuous - you can't only look at Mourinho's full seasons at Chelsea, when he's twice gotten the sack mid way through campaigns.

It's kind of funny when you think about it. A decade ago, Chelsea won the title, while United and Liverpool finished 2nd and 3rd respectively. So much has changed since that season. The top three finished 10th, 5th/6th, and 8th respectively, while non-Premier League side Leicester won the title, mid-table City finished inside the top four (and often have), Bournemouth rose to the Premier League, and Southampton finished 5th/6th.

But among all that, Arsenal still pipped Spurs on the final day due to a Spurs collapse to a position Spurs looked guaranteed to get, prompting jubilant Arsenal celebrations despite their initial expectations to finish higher. Some things never change.

It wasn't really midway through a campaign the first time. He was sacked in September after 6 games. 3 Wins, 2 Draws (one vs Liverpool at Anfield) and one defeat.

The point was mainly about how Wenger struggles to hit the 80+ point mark anymore which is what you need to win or challenge for the title. Once in eleven seasons is awful.

A combination of things probably: the players knowing they've got CL secure regardless of the result and so having one eye on their forthcoming holidays + missing Alli and Dembele from midfield + Newcastle being free of pressure and wanting to impress Rafa into staying + just playing badly.

Anyhow, Pochettino had already said prior to the game that the squad's mentality is the biggest thing he wants to work on in the summer ... and how right he is.

I thought the Chelsea game showed they had the right mentality? Or some other nonsense.

Two years down the line, no one outside of Spurs fans will even remember this "spectacular" season of theirs.

Five years down the line, it will be a very distant memory even for Spurs fans, while their board mulls making their third managerial change after poch

I think I can count on one hand how many of your posts DON'T include a lol at your own joke. I can count on one arsecheek how many of your posts are actually funny. Ya might want to take note how many people - besides yourself - actually find them funny.

Or, better yet -

Nope.

Pretty spectacular capitulation by Spurs at the tail end of this season. They have a long way to go mentally, as is always the case with them. I like Poch, but I think they'll have a battle on their hands to stay in the top 4 next season.

No idea what to think of United, depends on who the manager is, but Chelsea, City and Liverpool are all going to be much stronger than they were this season. Competition at the top is likely to be much fiercer next season. Spurs have done well to take advantage of a very weak league this year, but when the heat is on, they look predictably flimsy again.

Hopefully they can hold on to their key players, because it makes the league more interesting. Would be good to see six genuinely good teams fighting for four spots.

Chelsea, City and United have won the league within the last five years, so it would be nonsense to argue they have blown their best chance to win the league in x years.

Arsenal, Spurs, etc., on the other hand,...

Over the past decade at least, both Tottenham and Arsenal are outside the group at the top considered true title contenders. The three of Us, City and Chelsea have pretty much swept up.

So when those three teams have poor seasons, the likes of Arsenal and Tottenham are next in line to really push for the title. The fact they've still failed is the funny thing here
Precisely. Not sure why some fail to understand this. I suppose ignorance feels better :)

Sometimes I wonder if people actually read my posts before quoting.

Anyway, back to laughing at Spurs.

Got less points then AVB did.

Don't know why everyone thinks this team will be challenging for the title next season.

They won't. The shit league made them look better than they are. 70 points isn't that special. If City, Chelsea and us sort their shit out with too managers, Pool further improving under Klopp and Arsenal finish above them anyway they will be soon back to their 5th and 6th places, just with more competition now with the likes of Leicester, Southampton and West Ham and maybe some others who use the new tv money.

Even more frustrating knowing we could have easily over taken Spurs and City after their end of season meltdowns if we played half decently.

Pretty massive if.

Yup pretty poor season all round, none of the PL have any real quality, just a league full of sh!te.

Must be even more gutting for Arse fans knowing this has been your best chance in over a decade and you never even came close.

Was more disappointed in 2008 when we blew an 8 point lead in March and in 2014 when we conspired to do something similar. We're still a feckless bunch, and this season was shit as ever. However, this whole argument of best chance ever is flawed at its roots. If you're good enough, you'll win the league regardless.

We're just not there yet, and probably won't be till AW either takes his finger out in some respects, or is replaced with a good manager after his contract expires.
