Tottenham Hotspur vs. Manchester United

A bench is only strong if the gaffer makes the changes in time and chooses the right substitute. Only 3 of those attacking players can play and if there's a bizarre injury at the back early in the game then having a strong bench is pointless! I'd rather a strong starting line up than a strong bench.

For normal home games against the bottom end league teams, I'd agree with you, but Tottenham are going to come at us the entire game with us looking to hit back at the counter. We'll bring on three attacking substitutions and hit them on the counter when they're tired. As for injuries, that is a risk you have to take.

Hopefully Jones puts in a quality performance and puts to be the myth he can't play centre midfield. Great young talent and he is one of ours the level of criticism he gets is beyond belief. On a side note can't remember the last time I seen so many British players on show for the double headers on super Sunday.

Bizarre line up.
An opportunity to test the sheer might of this team with everyone fit and Fergie does the usual again. Jones in the midfield when Anderson and Cleverley would have passed the Tottenham's pitbulls to death in that area of the pitch. No Rooney, Nani and Valencia in the line-up is weird. I hope Fergie is aware it was Barcelona that lost last night, not Man City.

Bizarre post
Rooney and Nani is just back from injury and you want him to play two games in 4 days???

Valencia is in terrible form.

Good line up imo and always good to have options on the bench

Update: Vertonghen is apparently only the bench because of illness. So it would seem doubtful he'd come on as sub unless there's no option.

18 pages before kick off. Wow. Doesn't happen very often.

Hargreaves and Gattuso can be considered world class at their best for the job they were supposed to do if not ability and stuff.

Hargreaves wasnt ever in Gattuso's class for me. Even his best games for us came out wide.

Yeah - Fergie has never made any mistake before, right? Unlike you I don't wait till we drop points before i point out the flaws in the line up. I don't do hindsight analysis!

Of course he has he is human but he has done a lot less than any manager so far this season (and the past 20 odd years). And unlike you I just don't talk as much shite.

I really can't understand all this negativity about that line up.

Jones starting in midfield? Rooney on the bench and Nani not even in the squad? pretty obvious why some people are thing 'wtf?'

Great RVP interview :)

He oozes class, on and off the pitch.

he played the entire 90 minutes vs West Ham didn't he?

I don't know, in my opinion Jones is in instead of him to counter Dembele.
If it doesn't work and we are behind by half time, then we have Rooney, Hernandez, Valencia, and Giggs to come on if we need them (in that order IMO).

I'm just speculating, so I could be wildly off. But it's frigging cold out there right now and the pitch will be slick and dangerous. If Rooney is just back from a knee problem these are conditions that could easily reaggravate it. We really don't want to lose Rooney for the rest of the season, even if it means sacrificing this game. The good news is, however, we've done quite well without Roo over the last three weeks.

That seems to me a more likely explanation than retribution for a missed pk.

Another explanation is that it could be that it's a purely tactical consideration, as I'm sure many others are thinking too. After all, Rooney didn't start the last time v Spurs and when he came on in the second half we almost stole the game after a poor first half.

I really can't understand all this negativity about that line up.

People like to bitch and moan before they've even seen the team play.

If we play 4-4-2 it's SIR ALEX DOESN'T KNOW WHAT HE'S DOING, HE'S SO TACTICALLY INEPT.

If we mix it up a bit and go with what appears to be 3 in midfield it remains negative.

At least let them actually feck up before you slate them...not that I expect them to.

I think that he is an elite level centre back prospect but he never seems to play there.

Let's see how we actually line up. A narrow formation would be very strange considering Spurs are strongest on the wings. We could've matched their formation as it's our strongest as well, and then it would be the side with the most quality that wins. Right now it looks like we're not going to play the game on our own terms and that's rarely a good sign. There's potential for our full backs getting overrun here.

Having Rooney in the team puts the fear of Jupiter in the opposition. Tottenham would think twice before coming at us as they would worry far too much about defending than attacking. We have beaten City, Newcastle, Liverpool, Chelsea away from home playing Rooney and Van Persie in attack, why alter the winning formular that has served us so well in the previous difficult away fixtures?

RVP: "I look at the games I've played for United and I think I could have done much better and scored many more". My god he's beautiful.
