Same here. A 3 man backline in the Premier League is bordering on suicide. That type of system really only suits Serie A or Eredivisie, IMO. Maybe LVG will have me eating my words...

Any type of formation can work so long as the players understand it and it is worked on it incessantly in training. That's been the problem with English players down the years, too scared of tactical change.

We destroyed wolfsburg in germany with a 3-5-2 , micheal owen for fecks sake scored a hattrick. It can work. Hell if it works in world cup, it can work anywhere.

But when you're defending, you'd have 5 back in theory, along with 2 mids for protection.
And when one of the wingbacks is bombing on, one of the mids would sit back.

Not to mention, Rooney and VP could both play up front, with Mata just off them, and still have support behind defensively.

I could come round. But must admit I prefer pace and wingers!

Alaba was naturally a box-to-box CM and Lahm worked pretty well in central midfield for Bayern last year.

Still an unusual formation as they are the amongst the world's best fullbacks and they already have class midfielders to play in the center. Looking at their side under Jupp in 12/13, I'd have been shocked knowing this was the formation to be played only 2 years after. Of course not to say it won't work out or its bad though

Agreed, but from my perceptive, it was Mancini's tinkering with 3 at the back that cost City dearly 2 seasons ago, and in no small part cost him his job too.

I hate the idea of a system that is being used purely to get RvP, Mata and Rooney all in but would see Adnan incredibly marginalized.

Not about formation, more about the system. The three in the middle is the key. It is usually box to box-dlp-Att mid for Lvg. I presume it goes this way

Fletcher - Box to box -our de jong
Mata - Attack mid - Our sniejder
Herrera - Deep lying playmaker - netherlands lacked quality here

Welbeck - plays the robben role
Rooney - van persie's role

Obviously the players have different qualities, there will be tweaks but the formation doesnt matter its the system of possession based, fast football.
Er, ok.

Rodgers demonstrated last season that tinkering can work if done correctly. They played all sorts of different formations (including a back three) last season and it worked most of the time.

2 full backs in CM. Radical indeed
Lahm played the whole season in centre mid, he even started for germany there. They had shit full backs so he moved back to full back. Alaba was a central midfielder till 18, van gaal made him a full back and a good one at that. Now kroos is gone, they need a back up central mid, alaba will do.

Dont forget they have thiago, he will be an ace in their team, they also have gotze to play the muller role and muller to play inside. So many good players, so many formations. If i was Munich fan i would never get out of the formations thread in their version of redcafe. Man utd fan means we get to spend whole summer in transfer forum and in twitter thread waiting for that net tweet that is going to make me happy.

Or he could never return to his best and we waste the best part of 30m on a crock. I'd rather wait to see if he returns as the player he was.
Way to risky we could end up spending 30m on a new Hargreaves.
Way too risky, with such a serious injury!

And how would that be any different in january?
He'll be back playing in november/december (late october at a push maybe) - back in training in september according to reports.

Still a huge risk for a set back.

Except it back fired the moment it mattered the most. I would rather LVG play his trusted 4-3-3 and his fluid system . I think he is also restricted with the players he has, with some players not on the tour. He probably picked the team and system which is most fit and which in his opinion would be able to perform well.
We should also remember pep tried many formations in bayern pre-season and training sessions before they settled on 4-1-4-1(with mandzukic).

Lvg himself said taht its the valencia game where he will feel some pressure to put something up for the fans, before that i think its simple trial and error and how players adapt to his vision.

'Pools fatal flaw last season was they shipped in goals. Perhaps not always due to a 3 back system, but that they "did let it fecking slip" hehe. Anyway, this should go to the LVG thread or a new one.

Edit: @mata10 just made an excellent post that summed up my thoughts precisely and more eloquently.

Fletcher sits, Ander box to box I reckon.

I heard that Mancini used this system in matches without properly, train with it.

Erm, it'd be massively different. He'd have been back a few months, and you can judge that he's back to normal or not.
Buying him injured is pure mad lotto.

To an extent, I wouldn't mind seeing a diamond in midfield.
It fits Mata RVP and Rooney in the same to at the expense of Nani, Young and Valencia.

Although it would mean signing to more midfielders....Vidal and Pogb... I mean Strootman.

Strootman could always drop deep to help support the defence, and give more freedom to Shaw and Rafael to provide width

3-5-2 would be perfect for Welbeck too

He isn't good enough as lone striker for us and on the wing isn't his position in his eyes
If he plays as striker with another striker on his side then brilliant for him
I agree, Welbeck would get plenty of games as the main back up to and Rooney.Januzaj would be the main loser, I think, would only really be able to play the No 10 and would be competing with Mata and Kagawa.

Good point about Januzaj. Warren Joyce also reckons he may end up as a no 9, but still will be hard to get games.

I know it's unfortunate on Kagawa, but Januzaj would be back up to Mata for me, and would get plenty of playing time in certain matches and coming off the bench

 Exactly what I was doing.

I remember when Chelsea's online store started selling Robinho shirts. That one ended well for them...

Oh how we laughed at mighty rich Chelsea getting out bid.

Until City turned into such a richer club that Chelsea themselves have started moaning about City's spends!

Petrucci! what could have been! too late for him now, hopefully he makes a good career in the game. Ruined by injuries.
