Yeah, but you don't have to sign a superstar player to provide defensive stability in midfield. How many goals did Holland cencede at the world cup? Their centre midfield consisted of Wijnaldum, De Guzman and De Jong. Where are the superstars there? We already have Herrera and Mata who are better than the less defensive of those three. Add in a decent defensive minded player, willing to do the role asked of him in the system we've decided to play and we'll be grand. It's about the team and how you get the most out of them amd getting them to play together as a team, not signing superstar players just to have a muppet signing.
I'm happy with good players who improve us and who are capable of doing the job we need them to do. Don't get me wrong, I'd love Vidal but I'll not lose any sleep if we don't sign him.

I am totally on board with the idea that we don't need a superstar, but we do need someone. LvG saying he wants a month to assess and our general indecision doesn't give me great hope.
If I'm being quite honest, I'm shocked that LvG wants / needs this long to assess - strengthening midfield is an absolute no brainer, yet it looks like we'll be on another last minute dash.

I read that article as "we wanted to sign him but he chose to go to Man Utd, this has upset me. To save face we shall tell the papers we never wanted him anyway".
Also, I very much doubt the likes of Costa, Fabregas and even Felipe are on £100k less.

It makes sense that he'll have a look. A player who didn't fit the previous regime/style of play/system might fit what he wants from his team, and adapt to a different role. Even if one player we didn't expect to find a place in his system fits in then that's one less player to replace.

I won't be surprise to see Van gaal comes up with a SAF line "happy with the squad".
