I've heard a great story from Birmingham and the community where those 3 lads were unfortunately killed. I was also told there was no police present and that instead local Sikhs came out and protected the local Mosque whilst Muslims were inside praying. That is great unity from the community and hopefully tonight the community (all people) will stand together and not do anything stupid.

Sangat there right now. Quite a lot of frustrated people with one guy swearing live.

this from Sky , Police still expecting trouble

The Association of Chief Police Officers have listed six police forces who have requested assistance tonight: Avon and Somerset, Gloucestershire, Greater Manchester Police, Nottinghamshire and West Midlands forces will receive officers, dogs, horses and other equipment from other forces

Question : If all it took to reduce the violence is more policemen to appear in the streets, why did it took so much time to make this decision of 16000 officers. Why wasn't that decision taken ,say on Sunday ? Did it really require the PM to be there ?

Not sure you will see this interview on the news.

There are echoes of truth there, but he is giving far too much credit to most of the rioters who are just out to smash things up, get pissed and steal whatever they can.

This. There's a lot of sense in most his points and how we ought to address the underlying issues, but there no should be no sympathy whatsoever for those out there ruining the property and the lives of families. These protestors aren't revolutionaries, heck they don't even deserve to be called 'protestors'.

BBC political reporter Ed Lowther reports that the first e-petition to pass 100,000 threshold looks set to be one calling for rioters to lose benefits: it's at 78,000 signatures and needs to get past 100,000 for the backbench business committee of MPs to discuss whether or not to call a Commons debate on it.

Great idea, can't access the site atm but will sign it once it's up.

Its pretty easy to watch on TV and comment on the Internet but I am sure the police and authorities went through the escalation procedures in place. No one was expecting or planned for mobile mobs running around London using social networking to communicate. I am sure the police will be looking at new tactics and tools to counter such events in the future.

Simple stuff like making sure they have a weapon to strike protestors before they are within throwing range. Its pretty hard for the police to do much when confronted by mobs with bricks. They have to back off, and the hooligans have figured that out. If they had water cannons and other non-lethal weapons they could keep the mob at arms length and control them.

It's a bit of six of one, half a dozen of the other. He's right about the root reason for people rioting, but he's wrong about their motivation for rioting..If that makes sense?

Anyone who lives in London who hasn't been living in a bubble will know this kind of thing has been building for a while. I didn't expect it this soon, or like this, but I thought something would happen eventually. The inequality is rife, and before anyone points out that relatively the underclass here have it much better than most in the world, that isn't the point. Most people only really care about their own sphere of influence or environment when it comes down to unhappiness. You'll rarely be able to shake a movie star out of depression or drug addiction, or bankers from wanting yet another bonus by pointing out there are starving kids in Africa. So it's unlikely to resonate much with kids who have a lot less than those immediately around them.

London has been getting steadily more and more "gentrified" over the last few decades. Areas like Brixton and Notting Hill, Camden, Hoxton & Shoreditch and even Clapham have gone from being relatively dodgy, to relatively harmless, to fashionable and even genuinely up market.. . Stratford being a contemporary case in point, as it's currently undergoing this "improvement" as we speak in time for the Olympics.

But how is it being improved? How was Brixton, or Hoxton? Not by improving the conditions and outlets for the people living there that's for sure, but by building reams of up-market flats and moving in the middle classes. Then building expensive bars, shops and other establishments to cater for this new kind of population..And hey presto, you have a nice area. But what happens to all the people who were in that area? They suddenly can't afford to go to any of these places, and begin to feel alien in their own area...I can't move for new posh flats being built in South London, and I can't really see how it's helping anyone currently IN the area. It's all about moving people who can afford them in...One of the best points he makes is about drug money being kept by the treasury. It should be going back into the community. But that's the last thing the government would think to do with it..

On the other hand though, to claim that all, let alone even most, of these rioters are out on the streets because they want to be heard is nonsense..They're out because they think its fun, and they want free shit. And a good amount are attempting to justify it with this political rhetoric as an excuse to detract from it's selfish origins...But the reason they think it's fun, and the reason they're selfish, is certainly because of the perceived bleakness of their situation...

The birmingham guys are pissed at the police. According to a mate of one of the deceased, after the incident happened, the police blocked off the road and would not let the ambulance through even though the locals were pleading with them.
As a result, more rioting is expected as people from outside of birmingham have pledged to come and 'trash' the city.
