I WILL REST MY 'TIRED' STARS
Wenger is ready to take FA Cup gamble

ARSENE WENGER is ready to take an astonishing gamble on Arsenal's season by resting his top stars for today's FA Cup showdown at Old Trafford.

Arsenal boss Wenger insists the titanic fifth-round tie can make or break their campaign but fears the likes of Thierry Henry will be left shattered ahead of Tuesday's Champions League clash with Ajax.

Wenger has already ruled out Gilberto Silva, who is exhausted after returning from a 10,100-mile round trip to play for Brazil against China in midweek.

And he is considering leaving out Henry and some of his France team-mates Robert Pires, Sylvain Wiltord and Patrick Vieira to stop them playing four games in 10 days. It is a huge risk for Wenger, who faces a backlash over fielding a weakened side if things go wrong because the winner of today's lunchtime shootout will get a psychological boost for the Premiership title run-in.

The Arsenal manager also believes that defeat in the epic semi-final clash four years ago gave Manchester United the belief they needed to win the Treble.

But Wenger said: "It will strengthen our confidence and belief if we win. Winning always makes you stronger. I will do what I feel is right to get everybody sharp and to win the game. They are all good players so it's difficult to choose.

"But my French players, for example, played at Newcastle last Sunday night. Then they had to get up at 6am on Monday to fly to Paris.

"Thy had to train in the afternoon, then get up early on Tuesday to train and so on for three days until the game itself. It's too much. But whatever team I pick will be strong. I challenge anyone to watch our training sessions and pick the strongest team.

"They are all good and it's very hard. I give you eight defenders, eight midfielders and four strikers. It's impossible to choose between them."

It is clear that Wenger will rest key players and that could mean a rare start for England's mid-week goalscorer Francis Jeffers. He will not risk Freddie Ljungberg, who is recovering from injury. Wenger's priority remains retaining the Premiership title.

The Champions League is next on his list and he wants to field a full-strength team to face Ajax on Tuesday.

United's 27-goal striker Ruud van Nistelrooy admitted: "This is a massive game for us and of course we are all desperate to get into the quarter-finals. But we really do have to take care that, whatever happens, the game doesn't influence our league season."

I don't expect a great match, two days only after international friendlies. The players will be tired. And the latest United performance at home against City worries me. And will Fab be 100% fit after his injury ?

<img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laugh Out Loud]" /> Up to something?

What can he do? Play Ronaldo and claim it's Wiltord? <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laugh Out Loud]" />

I don't get this 'pshycological edge' thing.
It's just one game and there won't even be three points to get.

Wouldn't be surprised if Arsenal didn't play with their best players, the title is more important than FA Cup to them. They've been in last two finals anyway, no big deal if they go out now.

Important CL game coming up.

And that has whatgot to do with todays game?

They have the best chance to win league this year, no potential competitors.
This season they also have the chance to get something out of CL for the first time.

Sunday - Newcastle
Wednesday - International games
Saturday - FA Cup
Tuesday - Very important CL game

Don't blame him at all if he gives some of his players some rest.

so 4-4-2

...........Barthez.................
G.Neville Ferdinand Brown Silvestre
Beckham Scholes Keane Giggs
...van Nistelrooy Solskjaer......

Interesting because I guess in the papers Wenger has said he may have to rest some of his players who were on international duty. He may do so to keep them from playing four matches in ten days.

Since a major snowstorm has kept me from going to the pub, I am going to cough up the $15.95 for it and watch it on PPV.

Yea but you really would not want what we have right now. about 6 inches of snow on top of two or three that were already there, and there is possibly another 3-6 inches more coming with a second storm on Sunday. I guess you are right, I am very lucky to have that option.
