It really is make or break time now... come on United!

---------------Howard---------------

-----------Saha------Ruud-----------

4-4-2

- - - - - - - - Howard - - - - - - - -

Gary - - Oshea - - Silvestre - - Fortune

Ronaldo - - Phil - - Scholes - - Giggs

- - - - - - Saha - - Ruud - - - - - -

Bench:
Carrol
Brown
Djemba
Butt
Fletch
Ole
Bellion

outsider: Forlan

Rio is banned
Keane is suspended
Silvestre has been reported as been close to come back for this match, if not then Brown in for him
If Fortune is still out then move Phil into LB and Butt into the centre or maybe even djemba.

4-5-1

- - - - - - - - Howard - - - - - - - -

Gary - - Oshea - - Silvestre - - Fortune

- - - - - - Phil - - - Butt - - - - - -

Ronaldo - - - - Scholes - - - -Giggs

Bench:

Fletcher
Saha
Bellion
Ole

outsider: Forlan

Saha has been brilliant, but I just think that we need 5 in the midfield because that's where this game will be won as Porto are extremely strong in midfield. I'd also start with a centre back pairing of O'Shea and Silvestre as O'Shea gives us more height back there. Phil at left back to deal with that Alberto lad.

Doesnt Fletcher prefer more of an attacking role in CM ? i didnt see the FA Cup QF so i cant judge whether he can defend well or not.

Hmm...I think we will probably play 4-5-1, we had Keane in midfield in the 1st leg and still got over-run, so playing just 2 in the centre, one of which being Scholes who cant tackle for s*ite, would be suicidal.

----------------Howard----------------
G.Neville----Wes-----Mickey----O'Shea---
---------------Djemba------------------
Ronaldo-Fletch---Scholes------Giggs-----
--------------RvN-----------------------

Basically, you get Djemba by the ear and say: "Right lad, you sit right up Decos arse for the following 90 minutes"...

If things go badly then we can bring on Saha, his pace could be an even bigger asset against the tired legs of Costa and Costinha (is it?).

Come on Reds...

im with Van Nistelrater but i think he will play

he'll never play djemba2 and klebby together in the engine-room of mid midfield. last time he did was the early prem game vs wolves, and they looked awful.
i'd like to see djdj on at some time , but i think he'll start with butty.
he MUST play 2 strijers, so rvn +louis i think

this is the team i think he'll put out:

------------Howard--------------

gazza----wes-----mickey(is he fit?)----jos

ronaldo----phil----scholes----giggs

--------ruud--------saha---------

i don't think he'll play fletch and scholes together for this very important match, SAF might even go a bit more defensive taking into account 2 strikers and a not so tough tackling midfield and play phil and butt in CM and scholes on right instead of ronaldo. I hope not though,I reckon Ronnie is going to have a cracking game against his fellow countrymen at OT, he'll be well up for it.

Bring it on. Will you come back if you lose ? :smirk:

Where's Phil ? SAF will play Phil in place of Djemba in your lineup. I like Phil's urgency, reminds me of Beckham. Butt is not playing well and contributed little. He's like a tourist !

Agreed. A very attack minded formation - let's set out to rip into them from the outset - we want at least a couple in the first half to calm the nerves!!

With Silvestre questionable and Keane out, this will be a tough one to pull out. I think both Saha and RVN should start this one up front. Firstly, it will put more pressure on their defence. Secondly, it will allow Scholes a more prominant place in midfield. With Keane out of the match, I believe this is important. This way Phil Neville can play in place of Keane and have Giggs and Ronaldo on the flanks. I assume that OGS will be available on the bench. Wes has to raise his game. We can't afford a blunder. JOS and Gary Neville can handle the FB positions. Oh, yeah! Tim Howard in goal! Huge match!

This would also be my team (although I would consider putting Gary in the middle because he's a talker and a good organiser.) After the first leg, I thought we should go for an all out attacking formation Tuesday night. I'm not so sure anymore. I was reading the comments by Porto about how skilled they are at keeping possesssion and how we can't damage them if we don't have the ball. When you think about the first leg, they do have a point. I think our typtical 4-2-3-1 formation with the players we utilise is too defensive. But I think with the players above, there's a nice balance.

This will be stronger going forward than the first leg simply by vitue of having Ronaldo start, Scholesy playing in his natural position. You also have another creative force in Fletcher. I would also be counting on Fletcher as being one of the players who wouldn't give the ball away cheaply, that he can put in 2 good performances in a row. I know he's young and inexperienced, but when you consider how he played for Scotland against Holland, where RVN called him the best player on the pitch in that first leg, I don't think the occasion's too big for him. Nicky's done okay but he hasn't been that convincing for me recently. Djemba Djemba plays with a lot more controlled aggression, seems to have more strength, and I think his distribution is better. Although I know playing Djemba-Djemba is a risk, I'd give it a go.

We need to attack them early. Obviously I don't mean throw everyone forward right from the off, but we need to establish a fast pace and make Porto work for every pass.
Without Keane we are missing a natural driving force, this could/should be provided by the inclusion of Eric Djemba Djemba. He look like a natural tough tackling midfielder with the instincts to go forward when needed.
I agree with those who've said about playing Fletcher in the middle as well, thought he had a much beeter game against Fulham on Saturday than in previous weeks.

Ronaldo and Giggs can provide threats from both flanks and with Ruud looking a bit fresher in the middle we should have engough to be in the draw for the next round.

If we can score early, i think Porto might crumble a bit and we should be able to hit them on the counter-attack. I can't see them really coming at us unless they have to.

scholes with phil in midfield will be perfect!
not playing wes when he is doing well will be criminal!!
scholes and ron will score

Giggs should raise his game also....he will be the captain hope that would inspire him.

I would like to see Djemba at some point. But if we play 4-4-2 with scholes as an attacking midfielder, then phiza should be the holding midfielder.

I agree with the pairing of Gaz and Silvestre because I remember we had not conceded many goals with them in defense last year when Rio was injured. We need Saha and Ruud upfront to provide the ammunition becoz we still need to score at least one goal before considering a more defensive formation. I hope Butt's experience will be good enough to thwart the creativity of Deco.

Whats all this defensive talk  We should get out there and batter them. Trying to defend slender leads because our confidence is low, has been our undoing. We should have more faith and bury these pretenders

MFFM I totally agree with you, it is no good concentrating on defence, on current form you are likely to concede at least one goal, your only hope is to attack from the start, and that means playing both RVN and Saha and hope that you can outscore them by more than one goal.
Obviously I hope you don't :D

Bloody hell, are you on the wrong forum or what? Do you even know who you support? Putting Red smileys in front of Porto players names? whats that all about?

2-2 or 3-2 to Man.United. I presume you know what this result would mean for the overall average result. I was on the Porto Forum today and honestly some did'nt ven know how the away goal rule comes into play.
Had a right laugh at their lot...

I am just dreading a 3-2 scoreline tonite. I just know porto will score, but can we stop them scoring 2 goals and can we maintain a 2 goal advantage, it will be very hard but we can do it. 3-1 to us hopefully.

Also Fergie please, please don't play scholes on the wing just to accomodate 2 defensive midfielders, only to put him back in the middle in the second half after being innefective there in the first place!!.

Judging by ferguson team selection this season i think this is going to be the probable team for tonight. dont like to see scholesey on the wing but he needs to be accomadated somewhere. all the experienced man utd players will play so forget ronaldo, djemba djemba, fletcher

I am watching the game in Huston Airport. Have a plane at 3:50 Central, so I may miss the last 10-15 minutes. Hopefully things will be settled by then.
