This is done.
Can't wait for him to be with us
Can't wait for him to be with us
By Dan RoanBBC chief sports correspondent
"I would love the job," said Van Gaal, "I hope that I shall be the one. It's the biggest club in the world and it's a fantastic challenge."
The 62-year-old has been the overwhelming favourite for the role since the dismissal of David Moyes just over a fortnight ago.
It is anticipated United will confirm the appointment early next week.
The Netherlands boss was speaking at the start of a three-day World Cup training camp.
But despite the huge speculation surrounding him, Van Gaal is refusing to accept the job is his.
"You (the media) are thinking I'm the man but the most important thing is whether Manchester United are thinking that."
I think even if van Gaal (is it a small "v" or not? Confused) had been appointed last year, some people would have been excited. I just hope he's not past it and there's more heartache down the line...
Great, half a quote article.

I can't wait for this crazy bastard to join us. A proper United manager and if I'm right in thinking - the first who will be from outside of the UK & ROI. Remarkable.
I wasn't blaming you. It was directed at them. That's all that is there at the moment it does say more to follow.
Yeah but that in itself isn't remarkable, it isn't 1989 mate![]()
Bizarre.
It isn't bizarre, the fact he doesn't come from the UK or Ireland (which has suddenly been decided is British anyway?) is no more 'remarkable' than our first French forward or Serbian defender. It isn't "remarkable" because of his nationality. Farage isn't in yet.
I'm sorry have you lost all cognitive function? I'll leave you to it.
feck me how slow is Dan Roan at typing?
It kind of sounds as if he isn't sure. I don't doubt we've held talks and have an agreement in place but he doesn't seem 100% convinced.

Louis van Gaal has told Sky Sports News he believes Manchester United are "the greatest club in the world".
United are not expected to name their new manager until after the weekend, but van Gaal is as short as 1/33 with Sky Bet to succeed David Moyes.
And, speaking to Sky Sports news reporter Gary Cotterill at a pre-World Cup training camp on Wednesday, the Netherlands coach made it clear how much he wants the job.
Cotterill said: "He confirmed it is a process he is going through and said it is for Manchester United, when Manchester United are ready, to reveal who their new manager is.
"He did say Manchester United is the greatest club in the world and it's a job he'd love.
"It sounds to me from what he says and from his body language, that he's going to Manchester United."
Van Gaal offered no clue to whether interim boss Ryan Giggs is part of his plans, nor to whether Patrick Kluivert might join the backroom team if and when a deal is done.
There were suggestions earlier this week that deal might come as early as Wednesday, but it could now be the middle of next week before an announcement is made.
"I think it's a case of when not if, but that 'when' may be a little longer in the future than perhaps we imagined," Sky Sports News reporter James Cooper said.
"The received information now is that Manchester United are very relaxed about the situation but we might not get an announcement rubber-stamping Louis van Gaal's appointment as Manchester United manager until perhaps as late as next week.
"He's the man Manchester United want. They have sounded out other candidates but Louis van Gaal is going to be Manchester United's next manager.
"I think Manchester United, quite understandably, want to get this season out of the way. It's been a disappointing season and next week they will unveil Louis van Gaal as their new manager."
"I would love the job," said Van Gaal. "I hope that I shall be the one. It's the biggest club in the world and it's a fantastic challenge."

Van Gaal will not be free to join United until after the World Cup.
And it is clear he is not willing to allow discussion over his future to interfere with his plans for Brazil, having failed to qualify for the 2002 tournament in his first attempt at the role.
"I have to focus on my job," he said.
"I am coach of the Dutch national team. I have waited a long time to be in a World Cup so that's very important.
"This doesn't affect me. I have always had offers. I know what the football world is and what it means."

He can't say it's done until we say it's done. And it is done of course. We just haven't said it yet![]()
He meant it's remarkable we didn't have a foreign manager before, not the fact that we're set to have foreign manager. Phew, that was a painful exchange to read. Then I don't get what's remarkable about it?
I think it's this. The Club seemingly don't want to announce it until after the final game. Ogden is reporting today that it'll be announced next week. Talksport are tonight reporting that too (and that Giggs will be on the coaching staff). I'd be very surprised if it isn't announced early next week.
I don't see why a few days changes anything. Was it too much asked for United to unveil him earlier today, take the usual official pictures with the shirt by the dugout, and following the usual procedure when a new man comes in? Man, I hate waiting when today is the deadline!
