How can't you love him

I wonder what he would have done if they asked him what does he think about Tottenham or if he's able to lead the biggest club in the world in the first place.

He certainly is eccentric, but then I think for somebody under that kind of pressure and expectation, you need to be a little nuts already.

We saw with Moyes he just clearly had no idea how to handle it, it made him doubt himself. You know for sure whether for better or worse LVG will do exactly what he wants, and not bow down to players demands.

I really do think this could work out nicely. I think the fact RVP loves him will buy him instant respect amongst the dressing room - something Moyes never managed to earn.

A big part of why I wanted Mourinho was that he has big balls. He wouldn't come into the role questioning whether he's good enough. He'll know he is and get on with it. We've missed a trick here by a year, but I suppose are needs are similar now as well. Van Gaal certainly fits that mould.

Yep, he may have been first choice anyway but wanted to concentrate on the WC. If I remember correctly he was the choice to replace Fergie when he was going to retire before - so it shows we have always rated him. I am glad this time we've gone for somebody with real european pedigree and experience.

The recent snippets of comments from Van Gaal prove he is so what we need right now. He's arrogant enough, confident enough and bloody minded enough to walk onto the Old Trafford pitch and, like Cantona all those years ago, say "yeah..this is a big enough stage for me". The club and Van Gaal have matrimonial egos that could create one hell of a relationship....

Kind of funny how the brittish media is all having a laugh at LVG comment while us Dutch are all discussing on forums saying "whats so funny about it? hes just saying the obvious. It was a stupid question".

That interview was funny. He's right. That question about what he knows of Manchester United is stupid.

Can't help but think Schteve hearing LVG's accent. If Woody screws this up, no harm getting Mcclaren in. He's won a Treble with us, after all

I feel sorry for managers when I hear the dribble journalists and reporters ask them. Must be so tedious.

The general media loves managers that talk a lot of bullshit.

i wasn't sure about LVG at first. Moyes has really drained me mentally and physically lol. However, this is the man i want to see lead us for the next few years!! His interviews will be brilliant. Managers will not want to mess with him. LVG seems like he can snap at any time!

That tends to go out of the window sometimes in competitive situations.

To be fair they played eachother in a champions league final against eachother 4 years ago and were having a laugh and getting on after.

Obviously he was not an option last year, but Mourinho could have been. Doesn't look like we ever went for that, though.

As for 2002, Fergie claims Eriksson was set for that job. To be fair, I'm not sure what happened back there is relevant now since a lot has changed since at the club with different people running things.

Haha! He was the exact same way as we see him now in his youth coaching days. Seen the Vine of him celebrating a last minute goal against Feyenoord in the Under 8's? You read that right - THE UNDER 8's!

I will love it if he takes that much interest in United's youngsters

True. Of course there are no guarantees either way but high pressure competition tends to lead a bit of confrontation.

It's not the same thing but Mourinho and Guardiola knew each other from their time at Barca together. I remember watching the Guardiola interview when he finally lost his temper in an interview and spoke out against Mourinho and he also mentioned that and how Mourinho has ruined that.

A more recent though not all that strong an example was Rodgers a few matches ago having a go at Mourinho's tactics despite them being friends.

The question in this interview is more telling than the answer and the answer is perfect for that reason.

To ask an elite level coach "what do you know about Manchester United" is quite insulting to the club and the manager, its a leading and loaded question.

What was the interviewer implying? That not many people know about Manchester United? that weve slipped so far off the boil that were in a worldwide crisis that plants us firmly in the same bracket as Aston Villa? Everton? managers now fumble over themselves when asked about us? "What do you know about Man United?" expecting "Well they have a rich history and seem to be struggling now days, I dont know about their squad, they have players like Rooney? Van Persie? and some others?" utterly embarrassing for the journalist. I mean realistically hed be better off asking that question about Man City.

Thats why I love his response, "Stupid question" simple, accurate and completely slaps the british press in the face. Almost like saying "Are you fecking kidding me, you think were talking about Barnsly or something" he obviously has a huge respect for the club and a stern way of handling himself. Hell remind these players what club they are playing for.

Maybe we should wait until Liverpool officially miss out on the title and perhaps a few days more so it can come the day after Suarez officially hands in a transfer request. Like a triple whammy; lose title race, Suarez hands in transfer request, United appoint van Gaal and also sign £120m worth of talent on the same day. Then plan it so Steven Gerrard misses out on the World Cup.

I guess it doesn't really matter. LVG can clearly hold his own, so it doesn't concern me at all. I remember before they knocked us out in 2010 he said that United were a Tier 1 club and bigger/better than Bayern and that Bayern would love to have the stuff that United had.

Fergie laughed it off as mind games of course.

I have no problem with managers having back and forth in the media, banter or otherwise.

Yeah we're no doubt in for an exciting season under this mental bastard. As that 'bobbins' old man said, Van Haal will just arrive and say 'I'm here', as opposed to Moyes coming in and looking like a tourist. He's exactly what we need right now to dig us out of this hole.

Absolutely. Someone who doesnt shite themselves at the size of the club

Dear god he's fantastic.

I'm fully signed up to the cult of personality now.

The most important question is, will he come in and tell us "THEY keep telling me about Chicarito's movement", "THEY keep telling me about Shinji Kagawa"?

Imagine if he said "They keep telling me what a brilliant player RvP is" :D

Nail on the head. You study journalism or mass communications don't you?

The Beeb reporter just wanted a quote to put up on the website. Something to run a couple of features on the tele. Rather poor.

Doubt its going to happen. Firstly because the magnitude of the task at hand and the sheer size of the club means he wont be able to give them enough time and also because he wont be here long enough to really play a huge part in the youth side of the club.

He's 62 he could do 8 years if he wanted. We saw how long Fergie went on for. I think he'll eventually settle into a groove here, have a good team around him and enjoy being quite hands-off as he gets older but still within reach of all the strings.

I think it was just worded poorly. Or worded in a way a local manager would answer as expected. He obviously meant what he knew about United's interest in him.

He's completely bat shit crazy ain't he? I love him already.

As an aside, I found it absolutely hilarious that he couldn't just say 'world cup' in that interview  He kept saying things like world championships or world league. Brilliant.

World Cup is World Championship in Dutch, so it's not really such a stretch.

Having seen the interview on BBC News last night I'm starting to warm to this guy, particularly liked his slap down of the ridiculously stupid question the journalist asked, looks like he won't take any nonsense in his press conferences.

I wasn't sure when the rumours started coming out, it seemed like he was the only top manager available so almost the default choice. We wasted a whole season with that no mark Moyes when we could have had our pick of the very best of the elite managers in the World.

Anyway, it's only 1 season in hopefully many more that I will enjoy.

:) He'll stay and with Van Gaal in I think he'll be back to his best. Hopefully they manage to work on his training schedule and unlike Moyes I'm sure LvG will understand that he should be managed differently.

I'm 100% sure. Have you seen his statistics under Van Gaal for the national team?

14 matches - 12 goals and 4 assists.
