Why is this Giggs discussion even taking place? It's already been announced Giggs isn't being considered for the role on a permanent basis and Giggs has also commented on being overlooked. Have I missed some fresh developments or are people just going into a panic because this is taking a little longer than expected?
Is it just me or did this not happen?

EDIT: Apparently it did.

you're right. and i dont think its taken longer than expected. a lot of fans are just expecting too much too soon - just get van gaal and all the best players in the world. its not going to happen over-night and its not going to be smooth sailing.

By longer than expected, I just mean that it was widely reported LVG was going to be announced on Wednesday. In reality waiting until the end of the season does make a lot more sense when you think about it...
A. Not to unsettle the team while they play out their last few games.
B. So you know exactly who is available for the job. Part of me thinks Woody still has an eye on Ancelotti...

He has said the obvious. The contract has not been signed, if it had been, then the announcement would have already been made. The Glazers can't delay that because of the NYSE.

I think the whole issue will be sorted out next week probably. The Glazers probably will not want to drag this much longer.

Also, think LVG is a better option than Ancelotti for us.

If we appoint Giggsy over Van Gaal, it'l be bloody hilarious. And daft.
There's no way we are doing that. There were reports that Woodward is heading the managerial search and in this case, I favor Woodward over the board because Ed is not into sentimentality. He's a proper business man with a business background who's all about making practical and logical decisions.

I don't think they'll be mad enough to give it to Giggsy either. But if they reached an agreement with Van Gaal days ago (as some claim) I don't really see the need to wait with the announcement. If Giggs isn't in contention, then he isn't in contention and I fail to see how it would be disrespectful to him to announce the new manager before the end of the season.

Besides, with the leaks we've been having you'd think the "done deal" rumours would've been far more adamant than they are.

Well, we'll see on Monday, I reckon. If he isn't announced then, I'd be inclined to believe we haven't reached an agreement - yet. And time is running out as far as VG's World Cup commitments go.

I agree. Its a long shot but honestly I wont be surprised if it does happens. Too many things indicate that there's plenty of people who are happy with the status quo at OT.
You underestimate the lengths Woodward/the Glazers will go to just maintain their hold and grow the value of their asset . If Fergie and his gang become too much of a hurdle then they will be out of the door instantly, Fergie knows this and he also knows that open conflict with the Glazers will destroy everything he helped build and thus he will bide his time . The Glazers will also decide whether LVG is worth the hassle of throwing away Sir Alex and his band of legends, who themselves are a potent marketing weapon . What I suspect is if LVG digs in then the owners will ask Ferguson to deliver a real top class manager or they will give in to LVG's demands and decimate his power base . I think we could see a surprise appointment like Rudi Garcia or anyone else with the right track record . However if we are forcing the Co92 on LVG then it's difficult to see how we are going to attract any high calibre manager because I don't expect any of the top managers accepting such conditions especially if they have an underlying football philosophy they would want to impart on the team, Giggs may well become our manager by default .

well i hope he does. ancelotti is a good coach and players respect him, he doesnt have to scare them to earn that respect. there were rumors fergie approached him before moyes but ancelotti said no. BUT..i highly doubt thats going to happen. van gaal looks most likely.

I reckon the reason we are waiting is to overshadow City's inevitable title win. If we announce it Monday morning, what do you think will be on the back page? Manchester United's new manager being unveiled or City winning the title?

He - yeah. Maybe.

Wasn't the date when VG was supposed to resume his WC preparations the 7th by the way? If we have a deal it would seem very odd to delay the announcement - and thus inevitably disturb those preparations - for whatever reason, whether it be to let Giggsy play pretend manager in peace or steal City's thunder.

Ya, saw the bbc link.

I think that May 7th date was pushed back. I mean the Dutch team haven't even announced their squad yet if I'm not mistaken so there's still some time.

You say inevitably disturb his preparations, but to be honest I don't really see why it would cause any more disturbance announcing Wednesday gone or next week. The media will be flocking around him much more interested in United related questions than Holland's WC preparations either way.

Hitler and Stalin were too mild.

We need a Pol Pot - someone who'll herd all the players out into the Manchester countryside and make them live off the land. I'd like to see Rooney after a few weeks eating turnips.
Hmm I'm not sure I like referencing a man who ordered his troops to kill babies by smashing their heads off trees

Can we keep the chat to football please

Yeah, suppose so.

Still, they'll be flocking less hysterically after the announcement, you'd think. VG himself said - if memory serves - that he'd be focusing 100% on Holland once he got back.

Reported Manchester United manager in waiting Louis van Gaal is said to have put his Amsterdam penthouse up for rent.

The man hotly tipped to be the next Manchester United manager – Louis van Gaal – has reportedly made his Dutch penthouse available for rent, stoking the suggestions that it is only a matter of time before he heads to England.

Dutch newspaper Algemeen Dagblad reported on Saturday afternoon that the current Holland national coach has put his Amsterdam property on the market with a reported rental price of €3000-a-month.

They claim to have got the information from wensite Known Neighbours, and it is just another story that suggests United will soon have a new man in the hot-seat.

Ryan Giggs is currently interim boss at Old Trafford, and it would be no surprise if United are holding off making an official announcement about their new permanent boss until the Welshman has finished the job that was asked of him.

United face Southampton on Sunday afternoon, after which the preparations will begin in earnest for the next campaign – arguably the club’s biggest in many a year.

Van Gaal would certainly get them playing again, and if he really is on the move, surely there is only one destination…

I would like to see LVG appointed with Giggs as assistant. At this moment in time, although Giggs oozes what we all love about Manchester United under SAF, he doesn't have the experience to deal with all the things that come with the job of managing the World's biggest club and he is currently too "matey" with a lot of the players, that will cause problems, ideally let LVG come in and set up a good football philosophy with Giggs close to him for a few years, let the players attitudes towards him change from buddy to senior management figure, let him learn from LVG and add it to his experiences working with SAF and then we could be in a position to have a brilliant candidate for a young long term manager for the club. I would like to think that is decent plan for us. I don't see another option for us at the moment other that LVG, the delay is well explained by saying it is out of respect to let Giggs finish his temporary stint, I can understand that.

My mates mates girlfriend works in a hotel in Manchester and say's he's booked in for 3 months. No lie :smirk:

He's going to stay in a hotel for 3 months instead of buying/renting a house?

I remember I used to complain that there was so less muppetry involved with Manchester United, the way the other clubs have it every season. But this is getting so boring. Such a fecking long drawn out saga when everything has been as good as done. I guess a "will he, won't he?" muppetry saga is far more interesting.

Twitter rumour updates:

1. Announcement Monday.
2. On Tuesday.

Or,

3. On Wednesday.

No talk of any other "candidates" apart from the sun's BS "story" about Maureen yesterday.

I reckon the hold up is Giggs. I think the club have settled on LVG but want Giggs to stay as assistant. I think LVG is open to that but Giggs doesn't want to make his decision till the end of the season, to see how he feels following his four game stint. Naturally he might feel after that he wants to go and try his hand at management rather than be assistant. It's a big decision for him.

It's a bit of a stretch to think they need to know what Giggs is doing before they announce LVG, but maybe they want to announce them together, the whole package. Could it be written into LVG's contract that Giggs is his assistant? Or would that not happen?

"I know that he must have some trauma, he has no idea of football, does not know anything, in the time I was with him he always did the same training, his type is sick, he's crazy."

I wonder what the dynamic between Van Gaal and Mourinho will be like. Scope for a bit of rivalry there? I know they're quite friendly.
Yeah, it's one thing being friendly when your teams meet for a one-off match (even if that match is the Champions League final), another entirely when you're direct rivals in the same league over a season or more. There'll be a lot of mutual respect, but I suspect a healthy dose of friction as well.

Pure entertainment. Get the popcorn ready when those two face each other.
Jose was always respectful after his first meeting with Fergie - I reckon we will see something similar. Anyone remember what it was like at the 2010 CL final?
