United linked with van Gaal in the meeja

The story in the Telegraph yesterday (I think?) was that the club had given van Gaal a list of their transfer targets and that he was happy with them. It potentially could be the case that we go through with some of the transfers we're after without van Gaal even being present since he'll be at the World Cup

It's as if Ed Woodward is taking on some duties that a director of football would have. That said, it's probably only temporary.

I do think he might possibly take more of an interest after Fellaini money. He wouldn't asses the players footballing ability but rather rely on the advice of experts such as the chief scout to determine whether he is a necessity to the club and then before getting permission from the new manager he would look at the market value of the player, the potential worth of the player to our brand & commercial department and then also predict how much the players value (if any) will rise in the future before pursuing.

I think he admires Dortmund and he has ambitions to find great value like they have, I hope he does too. He won't cut down the wage bill and I'm sure he would be content to keep the transfer budget reasonable however he probably feels if we can replicate the value of Dortmund with a our wage and transfer budgets then we should be one of the very best in the world, thus increasing brand value. Furthermore, by identifying quality young players and signing them for relatively low fees they could be sold in the future for a lot of cash assuming the players want to leave or the manager is content letting them go due to replacements at the ready.

I bet Pogba's market value annoys him, that was £40m down the drain.

No he wont ditch Fellaini.

If I recall correctly wasnt there a whole power struggle going on with the Netherlands at that time?I remember there was a few factions

Look at his teams over the years. He's never given a player of his ilk a chance.

Id also be worried if I was Smalling. He expects a certain level of distribution from his centre halves that im not sure Smalling will be ever be capable of.

We need to rent that footbonaut from Dortmund specifically for Smalling and Fellaini.

That's Mata and Kagawa in then. And Young and Fellaini sent to the Dog and Duck FC.

Hopefully Ta'ra Valenica who has the footballing intelligence of a goat.

Fellaini isnt as bad as you all make him out to be. I am also quite sure LVG knows a lot about the Belgian lads including Fellaini. I bet he gets a chance.

If the 2 year contract story is true its a good move by the club, lesson learned from last year with the ridiculous 6 year PR stunt.

I wonder if Van Gaal will force him to get a hair cut?

He should probably think about getting it cut anyway, as a player whos become a bit of a figure of fun sporting a hair style identical to a wig most clowns wear won't help him being taken seriously.

even if you don't understand him just look at him

He asked if Bayern thought they could win this game in first gear.. Lvg went nuts..
Told him they played a great game but couldnt score.. "You thought we played well vs Fiorentina that game wasnt half as good.. We scored couple of goals but didnt play half as good! But if the results are right nobody gives a shit.."

I am looking forward to this..

Fellaini won't be sold a year after he was bought. He was a big money transfer and will be given another season to show what he can do under a different manager and possibly a different setup.

I remember him making stupid substitutes and playing 4 forwards against Ireland in 2001, It was idiotic. Helped us win.

Maybe we will get Cavani afer all.

Welbeck Rooney Hernandez RVP Cavani
Carvalho
Shaw Evans Jones Rafael
De Gea

Maybe I'm overestimating Carvalho's ability to control the midfield by himself, but I think I that can be excused as I can't really remember what a functioning midfield looks like.

I actually think Valencia has potential to go up a level or two under van Gaal (shouldn't be hard at his current level). Hardworking/reliable is something that will appeal to any new manager - he just needs a well defined role in our team. I'd start by explaining that corners aren't everything and that when someone is standing directly in line with the trajectory of your cross then it might be better to maintain possession and look for a more clear cut opening.

I'd be incredibly disappointed if he does offload Smalling for that reason. Despite his poor distribution and ability on the ball, he is very talented as far as innate defensive ability goes. Hopefully LVG compensates for Smalling's lack of finesse by pairing him with a comfortable, ball-playing centre back to alleviate pressure on Smalling. I also don't believe Jones should be given a free ride, of LVG did look to offset Smallong, when Jones isn't much better on the ball himself.

Mata and Kagawa aren't as fast as Bale or Ronaldo but they're fast. Their turn of pace along with Januzaj is excellent.

Was just going to post this, they seem more able to kick into gear than Rooney can these days, although Rooney is probably still one of our fastest players it takes him a while to get up to full speed.

That attitude is great. Perfectionist. People in England always say the result is what matters in the end (Mourinho is a manager with that mentality), but managers like Pep and Van Gaal take pride in the way they play. When they go to sleep at night, they don't necessarily dream manage a team to win, but the way you win. Winning comes after. That is why you see them get edgy after they win, and you cannot understand why.

Mata is not fast. lol.
I think he more than makes up for being physically a bit slower with his intelligence and passing. Does Van Gaal need a fast no.10s? He wants fast wingplay, I know this. This year's Dutch NT doesn't have a fast no.10. And if he likes to play possession based football, I dont think he necessarily wants a fast no.10.

I really don't think we should ship out the class of 92...lvg should have to work with them.

Could the Cavani rumors be because LvG will want to dump Rooney?

Think about it, Moyes couldn't dump Rooney because that would have looked horrible - first manager after SAF, and sells Rooney. Now, if LvG sells Rooney, then it won't look as bad because it will be the second manager after SAF and he will claim that it's for the better of the team and that Rooney doesn't fit with how he sees his team playing.

We could bring in Cavani and play a nice 4-3-3 with him and RvP.

Thoughts?

I notice there are media reports stating that Louis Van Gaal is going to have a few problems because of the United players present and past as well as Sir Alex attempting to create a Giggs and Class of 82 momentum. I certainly hope United personnel think very carefully about what they are saying and what they are potentially going to do when the Dutch Master arrives.

It would be absolutely wrong for any of them to do nothing other than accept that Van Gaal is actually a Ferguson manager in that he will not accept anybody else's claims to be the boss. There will be only one boss - Van Gaal. Much as I've dreamed about a Ryan Giggs-led Manchester United, I think those of us who would love to see it are forgetting that any new manager of United has to clear out the dead wood and make very tough decisions.

Would Ryan be able to do that, being so close to the players? I am not sure. I also think the Fergie Factor is and would be still exerting too much influence if Ryan was the manager or was given too much say when Louis Van Gaal is appointed. There is more than enough room for Ryan, Scholesy and Butt to stay on in important positions but they need to play their roles.

As for Phil Neville - sorry, much as I loved him as a player he needs to be ditched. Likewise Gary Nev should never put one foot in a role at United. He is much too much interfering and opinionated and would be somewhat disruptive despite not being a Keano type. Gary Nev should stick to tv.

Louis Van Gaal will not be a victory for the Glazers appointment as some in the media have been suggesting. He will be a victory for moving Manchester United on and with staff at the club who are too much involved with the players, he will be the objective and hard assessor of what is best re playing staff that we need.

To be fair neither RVP nor Cavani can play anything but as a No. 9 in the 3 up top formation. Robin certainly has the technical ability to play out wide, infact he started out as a wider forward at Feyenoord at later Arsenal when Henry was there. He might be serviceable but at this stage of his career he's lost a couple of yards of pace and might not want to play anything other than the central forward position. Cavani is the same. He's become a bit slower since his Napoli days and the prime reason of him apparently lobbying a move away from PSG is that he has to play out wide along with Lavezzi and Moura while Ibrahimovic is the No. 9 for them. It wouldn't be wise to buy him for a substantial amount and play him out of position. We already have several such conundrums with Mata, Kagawa and Fellaini. Only way an RVP, Cavani partnership might work would be in a 4-3-1-2 diamond. Robin and Cavani up top with Mata/ Kagawa behind. But then where does Januzaj fit in...

The whole Cavani link makes me rather uneasy.

I think you're underrating Cavani. He can definitely play a little wider. He won't be near the by line. It won't be Moyes tactics. LvG will make it work. He would be deadly on the counter.

It's not about rating or underrating him. I think I've seen quotes from him complaining about having to be the wide forward in a Zlatan led attack. If we're thinking of buying him, then we'd do well to actually think about where he would play.

I personally don't want him myself. Rooney's here for the foreseeable future, and Rvp isn't that bad a striker himself. Plus I'd hate to see Welbeck go. I think he'd thrive under Van Gaal.

Well in fairness he can be servicable there but it doesn't match his strengths as a player - it'd be akin to playing Falcao or Costa out wide when they could do much better job centrally. Infact out wide's where he's played for PSG for the majority of this season and he so hasn't been happy with it or with the fact that he's effectively playing second fiddle to Ibrahimovic. I really doubt that he'll leave PSG to play on the wing while being a sidekick to Robin when that exact situation has aggravated his relations with Blanc. IMO a club where he could play as the main striker up top or even share duties with another forward will be much more enticing for him. It's quite possible that Chelsea targets Cavani if the rumoured transfer of Diego Costa doesn't materialize. Anyway never say never, you might be right. Guess we'll have to wait and find out. :)

LVG likes pacy creative wingers with end product. Now while Cavani does offer immaculate finishing ability; his pace, creativity or dribbling leave much to be desired when compared to say a more natural wide player like Robben, Ribery or Reus : which are more prototypical of Van Gaal's system.

If he's desperate to play centrally, Cavani to Chelsea does make a lot of sense. He works hard for a 9, would have little to no competition as long as Lukaku goes on loan again.

Personally, I think the value of a wide goalscorer is so high that he's probably most useful in that role on a top team, especially on a team looking to play 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1.

I don't know if this has been asked before, but can he speak English?

Yes he's fluent in English.

And even if he didn't he would have been fluent by the time he came here. Van Gaal famously locked himself up in a monastery for a month to learn German before taking over at Bayern. Guess what? He learnt the damn language like a Boss!
