United linked with van Gaal in the meeja

It's obvious he wants the job though so I doubt he'd jeopardize his possible position by "warning" his possible future employers, he knows that he's probably second choice and yet he's still around so not sure if there is any warning there at all.

Second choice? First choice being...??

Besides, who else wants him? I don't think there's a vacancy at the top clubs right now - unless Wenger .... ;)

Exactly. They all know it's happening and it's the journalists that are making this seem like a protracted saga when really it's not at all. He's with the dutch squad while advising the board what he wants to happen. When he's free he will be unveiled.

All the journalists just want their name down as getting the scoop and being the one that asks the right question.
Yup. These so called journalists clearly ignoring the whole process of establishing a full communication between new manager and his upcoming club.

This is a thing you can't wrap by just calling Woody and telling him to prepare everything like it was some restaurant at the corner of the street.

It's a process and we're getting a clear sign that it's happening from Woodward's current actions.

The Champions League Final could be a perfect scenario. If Real Madrid lose, Ancelotti will surely go. Simeone could also feel he is ready for a new challenge. Very happy with either of these managers. Van Gaal annoys me.

Well it's been touted that we have a lot of other choices we'd rather pursue; Klopp, Simeone, Conte, Ancelotti and Jose. Their availability won't matter but if a deal can be struck United will try and strike it. It was only a few days ago it was reported that we were willing to triple Guardiola's wage and with Conte coming out today to say he wants to win the Champions League but not with Juve then we can't rule anything out yet.

Tottenham do and I'm sure teams like Monaco would love him.

I think they are waiting for the CL final to unfold and see what happens with Ancelotti at Madrid. There's really no explanation for the delay. We announced Moyes' appointment before the end of last season so its not a question of timing.

Fair enough. I thought you implied that someone else was available and we'd go after that person. Klopp, Simeone et al are not really 'available'. Conte is but if he's planning to win CL, the poor bastard will have to get us into the CL first :D

Tottenham doesn't seem like a step up for him, Monaco with the new found money are still...well, Monaco :wenger:

I don't agree with @Wednesday at Stoke in that we aren't waiting to see what happens with Ancelotti/Simeone. Looks like Woody's running around firing people and I don't think he'd have been advised by any of those 'currently unavailable' managers - Klopp, Ancelotti, Simeone et al to do so.

I don't think it will matter who's available and who isn't, we'll just go after who's best until there's no chance then go after a different option, all my opinion of course.

And I'm not sure if he's looking for a step-up or a challenge, there's no reason he'd turn down either of those two clubs if we turned our back on him for too long.

And I doubt we'd leave it that long too. I don't know what the hold up is with whoever we've chosen but all this waiting is doing my head in :annoyed:

FFS calm down. It's done, the club just need to announce the thing. He can say nothing other than what he's said. Club need to announce it.

Are they waiting for the Feng Shui to be right, or Mercury to be in the correct alignment with Venus?

It all brings back memories of last summer and the interminable Fabregas chase.

God I hate social media. I wish we could go back to the good old days when you found out United had signed someone was when they were holding the shirt. The suspense has killed me over the past few seasons, it all started with Sneijder.....

It really does and people buying these delays as if they have any logic behind them is strange.

We've gone from 24 hours, to after the last home game to after the end of the season to we wanted to get Monday and Tuesday out of the road. If it isn't tomorrow it'll be "Lol, we obviously are waiting until after the friendly". This stopped becoming 'obvious a while ago IMO

Typical dithering from the pen-pushers at United. Just make the announcement already and then let Louis work with his national team away from speculations and other distractions.

Also, feck Ancelotti! He didn't have to deal with a big reconstruction process since a very long time ago if not never.

Everyone knew Pellegrini would be City's manager before last season ended, and yet it took until mid June before the appointment was announced. Why, who knows. In the meantime they still went ahead and signed some players, mostly from Spain - no way of knowing if they were Pellegrini's players or Txiki Begiristain was making the decisions by himself. Still, things rolled.

We seem to be making decisions, clearing some people. I doubt Woods would have been told he's off if we didn't know who was going to be the manager. So right now it's not much of an issue. If the week ends and there's still no appointment, then I would be curious.

Isn't it just van Gaal putting pressure on the board to clarify things quickly - it could bleed into the preparations of his team for the World Cup and he obviously doesn't want that.

Mark Ogden said on the Sunday Supplement the appointment would be most likely Wednesday.

The fact Rio's not being offered a new contract so it shows someone is doing football related work be hide the scenes and it I would be massively surprised if it was Woodward.

But then the worry is the board are still dillying and dallying over the decision waiting for a 'better candidate' running the risk van Gaal who doesnt NEED to manage Manchester United will get pissed off or insulted and just tell us to take a run and a jump.

There's been no reason why this announcement needed to wait for:

The final home game of the season
His arrival at the Dutch training camp
The end of the season
Monday
His first press conference
His "day off" from training with Holland

....to happen. Same as if it doesn't happen tomorrow and everyone agrees it'll be next week into the friendly, there'll be no need for that either. It bothers me that people see these delays as somehow logical. Soon we'll get to the stage where we're saying "Obviously being a tennis fan he isn't going to sign until after Wimbledon" Either this deal isn't agreed and there are one or two quite fundamental areas of disagreement of terms or we're delaying simply for shits and giggles. I don't think the latter is terribly likely.

Waiting for the Mongolian stock market to crash or something before they can announce.

The Mirror are saying it will happen this week.

In regards to Rio. The season has been poor and there have undoubtably been a few people behind the scenes who have not pulled their weight or who have been a negative influence. These people are now being cast out. There will be more casualties before the start of next season but we're probably looking for replacements first.

I do hope that the recent changes have the mark of the new manager. It looks as if it does. That's what I'm clinging onto when in a couple of weeks time we all agree we're waiting until after Father's Day to make the announcement

Exactly what I feel. Why would anyone be offloaded, before the new manager arrives? Unless Woody made a financial decision for the club and decided to cut Rio's wages while he still has the chance...

It wouldn't take a football genius to establish that Ferdinand is past his best and certainly not worth his generous wages, Woodward could have easily determined this without van Gaal's input.

@Plugsy
Yeah, well. I don't think we've got anyone else lined up. Jose is a no-go, same with Klopp. I doubt Bayern are ready to part ways with Pep, even if they play more boring football than last season. Ancelotti has already denied the speculation.

I'm not worried. And if Giggs is named manager, then I'll just wait for the club to be sold and a new board installed, i.e. when we get back to sanity.

No offence to Giggs but I'd lose the will to live.

If it is tomorrow, it'll presumably be announced well in advanced of the NYSE opening and presumably like all other stories before it'll break tonight ahead of the morning by reliable journalists tweeting that the announcement is imminent or expected in the next few hours, etc, just like the Fergie retirement or the Moyes sacking. If Twitter isn't in van Gaal overdrive by 11.30 tonight, I don't think it'll happen tomorrow either.

becuase if he was would proably be annouced, he obviously wants the job, if we wanted him it would have been sown up leaving gaal to concentrate on the netherlands.

There are 31 days until their first match. Plenty of time to make a 2 line statement on the website to confirm what everyone already knows. Then his presser in July after the WC.

possibly, but the fact it hasn't been annoced raises questions, whose dragging thier feet and why?

i still think it most likly out come he will become the manager,(most likly cos thier are no other top managers available this summer) but it dosn't seem as nailed on as we thought

Why are people thinking we'd go with Giggs?

Surely if Giggs had any chance he wouldn't be talking about his options being to continue playing or take time off? Surely Rio would have been offered an extension?

I think the club is sorting out the staff changes before they announce him, if it doesn't happen by the end of the week then it gets a bit worrying. I would be shocked if this doesn't happen, there has been so much talk from all the reliable journalist. I think it's close anyway, with Woods and Phil gone it clears the way now.
