I'd agree with this. We might as well keep him on as backup if he's willing to accept that role. He still has plenty to offer if used properly and we don't exactly have numbers in midfield at the moment.
If used properly then Carrick is still an excellent player and you only have to look to see how important he still is to us, we're very short on players in midfield and even though I fully expect us to sign a new first choice defensive midfielder I still think Carrick will be a vital squad player next season.
I think it's the right decision to extend his contract. Like someone quite rightly pointed out, midfield depth is low. After Schneiderlin and Schwein leaving we should be looking to add numbers there not lose.
He's still a good player and in a bit-part role capacity is useful too keep. Much more so than Fellaini. Plus, a few of our homegrown players are going to leave this summer, so the need to retain him is even greater.

Great news. As most have said he won't be a first teamer or play that many games I think but he'll be vital back up to the squad. What he gives us you can't teach.

I'm not overly fussed if he stays or not, I don't think he's been that good this season really.
Hasn't been that good at all this year really, but I understand the motive from Jose to keep him. The thing is, neither he nor Fellaini should be our first option from the bench in midfield - even after we bring in someone new this season. I hope we can bring in 2 new midfielders (maybe Pereira being one) so that we do not have to resort to a past it Carrick or a toilet brush so often.
The old guard left over by Fergie has done little to show they were ever capable of carrying on his legacy and mentality, so I don't think he actually represents any sort of "winning mentality" that we've been missing, or he and others from that era would have shown more of it in the last 4 years.

Love Carrick, but at what point do we stop giving contracts to players who clearly aren't good enough (anymore)?
I should think so if we were to qualify for the Champions league his experience would be essential for the early rounds and cup competitions.
Glad he's being kept around, vital for the dressing room and vital too for the squad/the cup games if we want to fight on all fronts next season
Carrick isnt a problem at United he can still provide a lot.. Many games to play and we need his experience for the time being.
Not sure about this one. He's not really good enough to start for a team with our aspirations but it's always good to have someone with his experience around the squad.
Retiring him and moving for modric in any de gea deal makes more sense. Modric wil be on market soon. Doing a makalele on madrid will be sweet

He's good enough as squad player though. Even Jose knows he's not a starter.
Would rather buy one new DM and give youngsters more chances. Carrick is done. Give him a coaching role instead.

How many squad players do we need exactly? Seems like almost every player we have is labelled a squad player. Don't you think it's time we upgraded some of them?

We will certainly move players on during the summer. Him not being one of them, isn't the worst thing in the world and I imagine his role will be reduced even further next season, since we are most likely bringing in at least one midfielder.
If he's going to stay with the club coaching then we may as well keep him on as a player with a reduced role next season too.
And what makes you say we are not buying a DM?
Keeping him around as a squad player is fine because he's one of those rare players who won't have a moan about not being selected or playing very rarely. I think he still has something to offer in select situations and matches, but needs to be used sparingly. I also don't see Jose opting not to strengthen in CM just because Carrick is still around like SAF did with the black magic he used on Scholes and Giggs.
He's clearly past it. My main hope of this though is maybe it means we losing quite a lot of senior players this summer (Zlatan, Rooney, Smalling, Young), so it would be a good idea to have someone from the old guard still around.

Meh I like Carrick but I honestly think it's time for him to retire. He's been hit and miss for me this season. Keeping him around for back up is okay I guess but it would be nice to see him go out with his testimonial game in the summer and hopefully the Europa League trophy.
He's been a great player for us over the years so I'm fine with whatever he and the club decide to do. I just don't want to see him have a rapid decline and go out on a low. It still kinda' bugs me that Giggs didn't retire when Fergie did.

I don't think we can afford to lose him, Schweinsteiger and Schneiderlin within 6 months. He'll be replaced this summer and likely have limited appearances but his experience will come in handy next season and you know he won't moan if he doesn't play for a few weeks.
Assuming we sign one midfielder, We don't have enough midfield cover to let him go/retire so this makes sense.
I can take him next season but he shouldn't be playing as much as this by any mean. We didn't manage the number of minutes he should be playing well this season due to lack of DMFs in the team.

What young players? Tfm is the only one who can arguably play the same position and he has barely even played there and needs to go on loan. The simple fact is Mou isn't going to trust him as the first backup either. Another year wasting away on the bench is the last thing he needs. Go on loan and come back when Carrick retires next year.
Skimming this I really get the impression that the majority of people on here that claim to support the club (and yes, the players are part of the club) want us to buy as many mercenaries as it takes to get instant success (and not the type of success we might still have this season). Lets sack Fergie & sell Giggs while we're at it. If Jose feels Carrick still has something to offer next season... people need to get over it. Good player who's been a great servant. I really felt we were above this kind of mentality. Treat players like human beings and they will play for you, not just the paycheck.

Worth keeping for use as a sub and in the odd game. He should be used sparingly and we DEFINITELY need to get a replacement.
