United open Carrick talks

Not any more it isn't. Even Fellaini is ahead of him in the pecking order, based on performances too, so that tells you sth. I can easily name 6-7 DMs in this league alone that "on the whole" are better than Carrick.
Fellaini, ahead of Carrick... madness. The team only started playing semi decent when Carrick was reinstated in October.
Can he play every week, no, but managed properly and not relied on as much as he was this season he's still one of the best players in his position. Replacing him with a like for like is impossible as there aren't any out there so we for sure need to find some sort of replacement who can do a job.

Glad he has given him a contract seems like the right thing to do.

I think he has one more season left in him as a bit part player. He is on the wane, undoubtedly, but there is no one in the squad who can do what he does. On a whole, there are very few midfielders out there who brings what Carrick did at his peak. He shouldn't be starting many games, but he can still offer the team something.

He looked much better at the start of the season than the end. Mourinho has been forced to play him too regularly as our injuries and fixtures have stacked up. I believe he still has something to offer, on and off the pitch, when used sparingly.

Good backup if we get an injury crisis and the right mentality and experience to have around for the younger players.

On one hand, I don't mind him staying 1 final year as long as he's strictly a squad player and we sign a top-class replacement this summer, too. He can do a job a few times a season.

On the other hand, it baffles me the number of fans who are elated by this as he's been more or less useless this season outside of a handful of games early doors.

He's a spent force. He can come on for 15mins and add some composure, or play deep against League 1/2 teams in cup competitions. That's it.

Step backwards imo. We need younger faster options than Carrick, unless he going to become a player/coach cant see why this is happening. What next a new one for Rooney?

I don't think his legs are completely gone, and it's less significant if Jose plans to use him both sparingly and in a midfield three. Given that he has been a huge part of our success over the years and is also reportedly joining the coaching staff, I think it's fair enough - he won't have as many minutes at all when we invest further in our midfield, and his experience will be useful in game management to close out a lead. He's been over played this season, and he cannot be expected to play in a two anymore.

Remember too, he outpaced Aguero in the dying seconds of a game just over 6 months ago, so I don't think it's fair to say his legs have gone. Then again, Tony V put in a decent cross with his left peg that day, so it could have just been a freak occurrence!

I think there will be a huge turnover of players this summer, so holding on to someone who will make a decent back-up player for the next year or so makes sense I guess. If we let Carrick go we'd not only need to sign a world class replacement, but also a back-up - we keep Carrick and we'll only need the former.

I think there is going to be a bigger turnover of players leaving this summer than Jose probably imagined a few months into the season. Can see why he would want to keep Carrick if thats going to be the case. Perfect pro, never in the press, intelligent player, and has the calmness to help see games out playing last 10 minutes of matches here and there.

He's going to be 36 in 2 months :annoyed:

We can't replace everyone though and lord knows there are other areas of the team where we are going to need to spend a shitload (up front, centre-back, GK, etc). I think we'll be looking to sign a world class DM regardless, so makes sense to keep Carrick as a cheap(ish) back-up option rather than let him go for free and need to sign a back-up.

Unless it's the 'dressing room influence' thing & he isn't going to play. Especially at CB, we've got Felaini to do that really very badly in an emergency.

Let's say a great big NO & let's move on.

No idea what he's like as a coach but he hasn't been good enough as a player since Fergie retired. Not just in the Paul Scholes, still good but has no legs type way either. A majority of his performances just aren't good enough in any aspect. He drifts through games offering little or nothing.

What happens is he plays well about twice a year, and then after those games everyone seems to spend forever banging on about how important he is to the structure of the team (even though he almost never plays in it and hasn't been a regular in about 3 years), and about how vital his experience is.

I don't think the experience thing is a valid argument with every player. If it's the type of player who leads by example then yeah, it obviously helps...but if it's the type of player who is reactive to what the rest of the team is doing, which Carrick is pretty much THE best example of ever, then I don't get how it makes any difference.

Probably sounds harsh but basically it's reached a point where we're not even looking for a replacement for what Carrick offers the team. We're looking for a player who can offer the team what Carrick did about 5 years ago. The answer to that is unlikely at this point to suddenly become Michael Carrick.

It's like the Young extension again.

Will be good and provide good back up in those times of need...but if we gave chances to other players in the first place, they wouldn't be needed at all.
