Varchester City 18/19 discussion

How on earth did they get over £11m for him? That's the price we'd sell our first team deadwood.

I think we're benefiting from the Jadon Sancho effect (the rush of young British players wanting to go to Germany). Unlike Sancho, Matondo has never been rated as a future star in the academy, so happy to get the cash for him.

Spin spin spin. City inflating wages of players they have missed out on. I do not believe for a second De Jang was asking more than what they pay KDB.

Why not? He literally had City, PSG and Barca all desperate to sign him. Of course his wages are going to be astronomical, he needs a new agent if not. The reports I've seen state around £300k a week. City do try a lot of 'spin' when they miss out on signings but this one probably has some truth to it, in that City were not willing to give him more than or parity with de Bruyne, and even if we did, he'd probably have chosen Barcelona anyway.

C'mon. You can't really believe De jong is on 300k/week.

Barcelona have the highest wage bill in world football, they're clearly not adverse to paying big salaries. I don't know why it's so hard to believe his agent wasn't able to secure an offer of around that (probably including bonuses, I imagine his flat rate is lower, but 16m euros is the only figure I can find cited in the media). If City or PSG had signed him and the media reported his wage was £300k I'm sure a lot of people would find that much easier to believe, which doesn't make sense given Barcelona beat both of those sides to his signature.

No way he is on 300k, he is not coming from a top team ffs.

Many top UK newspapers quoting £300k per week (an odd one says €300k/£260k).
The fact that 3 wealthy clubs openly courted him drove the salary up.

Financial dopers constantly whining about money. Guardiola has been complaining about it for weeks too "oh we haven't spent this on transfer fees" "oh we can't compete on wages". fecking embarrassing. Really wish someone else was in the title race as having to cheer on this horrible club makes me feel slightly sick inside.
I've read Guardiola often commenting on refusing to enter into an auction for a player once a fee etc.has been agreed.

Begiristain, who does the deals, apparently is a bit OCD in this regard.

It looks like City have a format/structure for new transfers.

Although I'd say it's flexible to a degree, we have missed out on a good number of players by refusing to alter bids or salaries once they've been agreed with the selling club and the player.

In the case of De Jong, once Barcelona were interested, it was over for City.

I've been there, and if you were a footballer given the choice of there or Manchester, you're going to Barca, no question.

Guardiola has also commented on a limit that would be spent on a DM.

They appear to be reluctant to pay anything more than £50m.

Although that is huge, there is the PL club factor which appears, as you well know, to inflate the 'real' value of a player.

I don't know why, but the ex-pro's in the media keep harping on about a like for like replacement for Fernandinho, who is now too old.

However, the reality is, that player isn't about.
I know that, so it would be safe to assume Guardiola knows that too.

City have enough midfielders to cope but are looking for a young player for the future it seems.

The last bit about it making you sick having to cheer us on.
Recent history between us, (although we're irrelevant apparently) and Liverpool would have most City fans cheering United to hunt them down if the tables were turned.
And I never thought that would ever be the case!

I might be bring biased but I don't see what's wrong with that article, seems like basic facts, what do you think is wrong with it?

Agreed. Matondo has been nowhere near the pre-season squads or any of the cup squads, which is where the more promising academy players have been included. He's a million miles from the first team, so any cash we get for him is great news.

Its written by Jamie Jackson.

Few years down the line, we may see that it was probably another dodgy dealing done through back channels.

Fuming so much about our own result I almost forgot that these cnuts compounded the night by loosing

Questions will need to be asked about saint Pep if even his all conquering centurions can't retain the title

Pep doesn't handle pressure well and we saw it with Barca. Kinda expecting a meltdown of him by the end of the season.

Them letting Liverpool win the league with such an abject title defence would make me dislike them than èverything else they've managed combined has. After all the hyoe last year, this?

Pep proving he isn’t all that.
Given the biggest budget in football EVER and he still can’t get them to do what they should do.
It’s now up to the rest of the premier league to do what’s right, and stop the Liverpool apocalypse.

If you are still within 1 goal of City you stand a chance, all games City lost, They took the lead

Or if you're us we can afford to give them a 2 goal advantage :smirk:

It's actually quite unexplainable how totally dominant they are week after week after week and then suddenly they go and loose a game out of no where all the while Liverpool scrape wins week after week after week and never have it catch up on them

If I were a City fan I'd be fuming

Looks like Pep from the first season with this uninteresting and awkward interviews.

With Liverpool, you are almost certain that once they go ahead, that's it. no way back for the opponent but City its the opposite until they are 3 goals ahead before you can be assured

He needs to get back on the coke. He was a much more interesting, jittery, energetic lurk then.

Why couldn't they do this last year?
That's now three games they've lost after taking the lead within a month

It's weird when the interviewer was asking him about an event in the game and he looked like he doesn't remember it at all. Was he even concentrating on the game he was managing in ? Very awkward.

Years of the Colombian flu has melted his brain.

Fuxsakes. If Liverpool win the league I'm gonna build a hobbit hole down the end of the garden and hide in there for 12 months. On the flipside, if nothing makes our board focus their minds, Liverpool winning their first title in 30 years should light a fire under Old Trafford.

Pep really should get hell for losing this title with this squad after what they did last year - he should be embarrassed.
