I don't think I am able to chat from work, so can somebody post a few observations from time to time. How are the lads so far? Ronnie making a run yet?

Sounds to be going alright so far, United have had the best chances and although it has been pretty defensive.

42 mins: Ronaldo cannot control a wonderful Gary Neville pass but does win a corner.

42 mins: Giggs chases back to win the ball on the edge of his own area.

41 mins: Phil Neville is caught in possession by Kuranyi for a second time.

40 mins: Vranjes cannot resist another shot at goal and again it his high, wide and handsome.

39 mins: Gary Neville brings down the on-rushing Lahm who had got the better of the England full-back.

39 mins: Gary Neville heads clear at the near post after a good Hleb cross.

38 mins: van Nistelrooy fails to find Scholes after a neat passing move breaks down on the edge of the area.

38 mins: Bordon crosses towards Szabics but he slips before the ball reaches him.

37 mins: O'Shea is amazed to concede a throw-in after clashing with Hinkel.

36 mins: A woeful centre is cleared at the near-post by Silvestre.

36 mins: Bordon thunders a shot into the wall but Vranjes forces a corner from the rebound.

35 mins: Ferdinand commits a needless foul 25 yards fronm his own goal. Hleb was the man brought down.

34 mins: Giggs crosses but van Nistelrooy cannot control a ball that is slightly behind him.

34 mins: A clever move works the space for Hinkel to shoot inside the area but there is too much height on the pass and he steers it wide of the target.

33 mins: Phil Neville brings down Philipp Lahm in a dangerous position.

32 mins: It's Keane's turn to be caught in possession by Kuranyi.

32 mins: van Nistelrooy climbs well but cannot turn his header goalwards from a speculative cross.

31 mins: Ferdinand shows great composure to launch an attack but again Ronaldo is caught in possession.

29 mins: Szabics finds space down the left but loses out - eventually the ball falls to Vranjes but his effort is again wayward at best.

29 mins: Ronaldo lifts the ball forward but Hildebrand collects under no pressure.

28 mins: Howard is stretched to hack clear after almost being sold short by Silvestre's back pass.

26 mins: Scholes crosses from the right but it is too high - even for a leaping Giggs.

26 mins: Hleb tries his luck from 25 yards but fails to threaten Howard's goal.

25 mins: van Nistelrooy misses a chance to intercept on halfway, a great period of possession for the hosts.

24 mins: A clear opening for Szabics who is unmarked 12 yards from goal but cannot direct his header goalwards.

23 mins: Giggs and O'Shea combine well down the left but Phil Neville is robbed of possession by Kevin Kuranyi.

22 mins: A long ball upfield is brilliantly dealt with by Hinkel.

21 mins: The visitors look very solid at the back and are enjoying a good spell.

20 mins: Gary Neville crosses first time and van Nistelrooy hooks a shot just wide of the target.

20 mins: Silvestre heads to Keane on halfway.

19 mins: Giggs shows great skill on halfway before moving the ball on to Ronaldo who promptly loses it.

18 mins: Ronaldo takes the free-kick. It is a simple save for Hildebrand but van Nistelrooy was a yard short of turning the ball into the goal.

18 mins: Giggs turns Meira but is then hacked down by the frustrated defender.

17 mins: Howard is quickly from his line as Imre Szabics looks to pounce on a loose ball.

16 mins: Bold solo run from van Nistelrooy but he can only shoot straight at Hildebrand from an acute angle.

15 mins: Vranjes goes for glory from 30 yards but the ball sails 20 feet over the bar.

15 mins: Ronaldo is frustrated as he loses out on a 50-50 ball.

14 mins: Giggs is again caught in possession as he attempts to turn the ball towards van Nistelrooy.

13 mins: Good run into the area from Scholes and Giggs glances a header towards goal but fails to find the target.

12 mins: Ferdinand sends a pass out of play after a breakdown in communications with Gary Neville.

11 mins: Giggs is quickly closed down as he drifts to the left side of middle.

10 mins: van Nistelrooy has space on the edge of the area but his cross sails behind for a goal kick.

9 mins: Ferdinand heads clear after a weak cross sails into the United area.

8 mins: Scholes fells Marcelo Bordon on the edge of the home area.

8 mins: Giggs only has van Nistelrooy to aim at in the area and fails to find his target.

7 mins: Tim Howard is quickly off his line to collect the set-piece.

7 mins: First chance of the night as the ball falls to Jurica Vranjes on the edge of the area but his effort is deflected behind for a corner.

6 mins: Ruud van Nistelrooy is allowed to turn but Fernando Meira beats him with a well-timed challenge.

5 mins: Horst Heldt is the latest to send Ronaldo crashing to the turf at the cost of a free-kick.

5 mins: Keane finds Gary Neville on the edge of the area but he loses the ball - and appeals for a free-kick are waved away.

4 mins: Rio Ferdiand climbs well to head clear and Mikael Silvestre and Phil Neville clear to halfway.

3 mins: A fantastic atmosphere inside the stadium as the visitors look to break however Ronaldo cannot link with the on-rushing John O'Shea.

2 mins: Ronaldo is felled for Hinkel, first free-kick of the game.

2 mins: Andreas Hinkel breaks down the right but is closed down.

1 min: Gary Neville swings over the first cross of the game but Timo Hildebrand safely collects.

45 mins: Ronaldo takes too long to take the corner and the half-time whistle sounds before he can do so.

45 mins: Ronaldo has been ineffective but he does win a corner with a deflected cross.

44 mins: Szabics shoots straight at Howard after good work by Hleb.

43 mins: Good delivery from Giggs but the ball is cleared before Silvestre can connect with his attempted header.

Actually it was a corner. never mind.

Nothing too inspiring in the first half. I can see why Stuttgart are so successful defensively, it is their first priority. United had some good possession and decent positions early on, but failed to turn them into clear chances or really threaten the goalkeeper.

Why the hell doesn't espn show champions league games anymore???

sounds like Ronaldo is having a horrid time up there?

Not a whole lot of positives from him... Or from the rest of our attack really. Fergie tried to put him on the right for a while. So far he's getting no joy, much like Giggs, Scholes, and Ruud.

taken from soccernet:

So a tough first 45 minutes for United and particularly for young Ronaldo, who Hinkel has had in his pocket! Ferguson will be keen for Keane to get his foot on the ball in midfield and push his side forward and out of their own half. Scholes has been conspicuously quiet and United need him to spark some invention in the second half.

acoording to Soccernet we are playing shit

That's a bit unfair. Stuttgart aren't that bad.

They do, one game per week. Yesterdays game was originally scheduled for 2:30PM (I think it was the Dynamo Kyiv/Internazionale game), but was rescheduled to 1:00AM this morning due to baseball playoffs. So I set the VCR, and will watch soem of it tonight.

Not especially - in fact they look slightly more threatening and are certainly closing United down at lightning speed. We are showing no inclination to do likewise.

More often than not we struggle against teams who press us all the time - nobody is being given time on the ball, not even Tim Howard. We resort to pumping aimless balls forward and the Stuttgart defensive pair will swallow those up all night long.

This is straight from the 'how to play Manchester United' manual. 0-0 would be a good result tonight.

Haven't got access to watch the match or listen to the match,
so I am just following the match through live text update

so maybe I don't really know what the match was really like in the first 45 minutes :annoyed:

It was a joke Tomo - you said we were playing shit, I said.....well, never mind. I'm wasted here. ;)

47 mins: Scholes is forced to head off his own line as the home side make a bright start to the second-half.

46 mins: Good cross from Kuranyi forces a corner.

46 mins: Back under way and the first United raid comes to nothing with O'Shea giving away possession.

Baaa. Howard almost gifts a goal coming out to an inswinging corner and totally missing it. Scholes cleared off the line.

I guess Scholsey is little shy in the first half? I hope the hernia thing is not bothering him again. Is really Ronaldo beeing outplayed by Hildebrand and co?

And what is going on with this poor marking?

Thanks arnie.....second half to come.

Come onnnn Ruud :nervous: don't worry about a hat trick...just one will do.

Howard needs to be a little bit more decisive when dealing with crosses or long ball inside the penalty area

not just an observation from today....it's from what I've seen since the pre-season

I am not saying he's really bad at them, it's just that he may need a little bit more practice on it

crap...they just scored

50 mins: GOAL SZABICS - Ferdiand slips and the Szabics races clear to beat Howard with a clinical finish from the edge of the area.
