What difference does it make where the passes take place? It's Rooney, when he gets on the ball it's to advance the play and create things. Any time he gets on the ball that's him getting involved in the build-up and it's clear as day that he's done this significantly more than Van Persie has this season. It's amazing how perceptions differ when it's an opposition player rather than your own team's player, because what Van Persie's doing now is just what Rooney was doing in 09/10 but with better finishing. He was regularly criticised that season for not doing contributing enough outside of goalscoring despite the fact he was averaging 40 passes per game back then...and yet Van Persie's being praised for his all round game despite participating far less. Very strange. Van Persie as a goalscorer's been fantastic for his range of finishes and how clinical he's been but I don't understand the idea of his all-round game being better than Rooney's in any way.
All he's saying is that comparing the pass stats is bollox because they're playing different roles.

Scholes would have been proud of that pass to Hernandez. Perfect!

And the fact that they play different roles means that Rooney will contribute more in all-round play.

scored a penalty, but he had a poor game, passing is awful and look tired.

Scored a penalty - had another really good shot, which the keeper just about saved...then set up Danny for a great opportunity, which he blew.

Played at half pace, after the sending off.

29th goal of the season, only 3 away from breaking into the United All Time Top 3.

Very very poor today but he continues to score and he's our only striker who does.

Poor performance from him today, but he got another goal and the penalty was a very good one. At this stage of the season, I'll take that.

Very good and very poor? He was average. Scored a goal and considering the game and how we played he was on par with the team. At least got a goal.

At least he seems more and more confident on the penalty spot

Always difference of opinions on Rooney. I thought he did fine without been spectacular. Anyone have his passing stats? Thought he kept it moving very well at times

Anyone else notice that he pretty much moved into midfield after Scholesy went off? I have seen him do it many times before, and noted it in the matchday thread too. What are everyone else's thoughts on him doing this?

I think it's because Cleverley was a bit too much forward in terms of positioning.Carrick had to be helped in terms of passing and spreading the ball

Cleverly seemed to swap with Giggs and go left wing, so I thought it ended up Carrick and Giggs in the middle.

Wayne always drops deep so nothing strange about doing it today.

Don't think he was bad at all today, I thought he had a good game. Saying he was 'very very poor' is extremely harsh. What did he do wrong? Had a few good shots, should have had an assist for Welbeck and scored a penalty. Plus he was the main player keeping the ball moving once we reached the penalty area, he was spreading it wide to Valencia very well for the majority of the match.

I wouldn't say that he was very poor, as I think that's an exaggerration, but I can't say I was impressed by him today. He looked tired at times, and his passing was also quite sloppy as well.

6/10 but he scored and has been our poty. he can't shine every game but he still contributed when put on the spot.

Thought he was far too casual at times. He should be the player on the pitch that should make sure when we get in a position like today from being too complacent, not lead the charge in that department.

Terrific penalty though.

30 goals this season, he had a blip in the middle but since the cup game against city I think he has been consistently scoring, and playing good in general. He was okay today, too casual after we got the second but I think he'll beat his previous scoring record (34 goals).

Thought he was good, to be honest. Suprised to see others thought he was poor.

What does being world class mean? According to whoscored.com's analysis of the Opta statistics, Rooney is ranked fourth in the major European leagues this season (behind Messi, Ronaldo and Ibrahimovic). We have a tendency to see him playing the roles of striker and midfielder simultaneously and to be critical when he isn't the best in the world at both. What he does on an "average" day is outside the abilities of normal players - skill, strength, stamina and the desire to put it all to work for the team all the time. He's not Messi as a striker or Schweinsteiger as a midfielder, but he's not far from either and his contribution is enormous.

I don't think there is a single meaning of world class to be honest. We all have an idea of what it is, but each and every person has a different interpretation of it.

I'm impressed by Rooney's on-field discipline and will to win. He has not had a yellow card in the league this season. And he has raised his game during the run in, like last season.

Though he was very lucky to escape one yesterday, when he did his hack down the guy after losing possession thing.

29 goals this season now, almost 30 for a second time in three seasons, he's been top class this season, not just as a goal scorer.

Somehow got all 3 bonus points on fantasy football. What game were they watching? He was below-average.

Thought the same, although it seemed to me almost any time he tried a really penetrative pass it was cut out pretty easily and that's happened pretty consistently recently. He's moved the ball round well but he's not opened up the defence as well as he can. 83% accuracy and 75 passes (3rd most behind Scholesy and Carrick) so pretty standard for him this season really.
