Wayne Rooney withdraws from England squad, minor knee injury

I hardly think he'd look sluggish because he had a lot of drinks 6 days prior to the game.

Top sportsmen playing at the highest level need to be in good condition all of the time, and it's not like he'd just had a couple of beers, he's bladdered and had been drinking all through the night, the body doesn't recover that quickly when your aim is to compete in a sport rather than going to sit behind a desk or serve at a counter.

I sometimes wonder if people defending pros after they went on a piss actually know that drinking an alarming amount of alcohol will have a noticable effect on your work (nevermind health) a good couple of days after it. I'm sorry I won't be buying that, that isn't professional. Paradoxically, it isn't so difficult to restrain yourself from drinking. Since I've been running my school (plus teaching in there) I've never gotten myself to a state like that during school terms. This isn't 'just a couple of pints with me mates'.

Wasn't it on the Saturday night? Don't players have the off on Sunday for training and their match was tonight. I'm not really justifying his partying late into the night but I do think too much is made of players having a bit of fun once in a while. I'm sure there are plenty of times they go drinking with friends and family mid season and you never hear about it.
Would you be defending this if it was somebody else? It's not exactly news that Rooney likes to drink but it's things like this that have turned fans against him and why he doesn't get the respect you feel he deserves. He's done nothing to keep himself in top shape and he's nobody to blame but himself for the fact he can't play at the highest level anymore.

I dunno, my hangovers last ages these days
Hangovers take 2/3 days to recover from. The consequences of an actual overdose of alcohol can have much bigger effect, though, with dehydration having an obvious impact on your whole body. So if you say get totally wrecked on a Saturday night you'll most likely recover (fully) around Wednesday. Before resident defenders of Rooney's behaviour jump at me, recovering on Wednesday means he's had 3 days less of possible preparations for the Arsenal game and as an effect - yes, he could be rubbish then.

I'm glad you've explained hangovers.

I sometimes drink 8 pints and feel like shit for the next few days. Never before have I linked the two.

He is also captain and the game itself has nothing to do with it, nor does whether he had a day off training the next day. Its setting an awful example and showing a very unprofessional side to the game and lacking the sacrifice and discipline which is basically expected of all footballers. If you're a footballer you can't drink during the season.

I'd give it 6/10. Good enough try but for the fact I wasn't really explaining hangover but stressed it takes longer than Rooney's apologists suggest.

Still it could have been worse so bravo.

It's only a joke, although I'm pretty sure everybody knows a hangover lingers for a few days once you hit 30.

Still, it's good you clarified this.

He is paid a huge amount of money to do a job and yes that actually do mean doing the best he can to stay in shape and alcohol is a big no go for top atletes. If he cant stay away from booze then he can take a wage cut to 20k a week or get lost. I think he needs to stay with the reserves for a few months as he clearly needs to learn a lesson or two and also to tell the rest of the squad enough is enough. Its time to get focused or get frozen out if can´t be bothered.

Mourinho might be more relaxed about these things than Guardiola.
Pep won't even let his players have sex after midnight on their days off.
No matter how you spin it, it doesn't reflect well on him.

Those pictures are pretty fecking shocking. You'd think that has to be curtains for his United career.

This.

What an idiot. Seriously lacking in sense. Obviously it's unprofessional for him to be getting absolutely destroyed on drink mid season. That's a given. But that these come out now are even worse. The timing is so poor. He's at the lowest ebb of his career so far and he needs to send a message he can some back, and this is what we get. :nono::rolleyes:. Good luck Wayne.

People defending him saying "if he was in the form of his life, then this wouldnt be an issue" - isnt that kinda the problem? Hes nowhere near the form of his life? Hes been in a stink for three years and should be doing everything possible to at least show some semblance of his best form and that should include his diet, what he eats, drinks, smokes or whatever.

Saying that, it was rumoured he was sent home "injured" as a cover for this and I thought it was too conspiracy filled. Now not so much.

Why has there not been a funny thread title change yet? Give the people what they want.

Ibra is suspended for this game, so he was a nailed on starter after losing his place and he goes out and does this? This is what a 31 year old club and country captain does? fecking hell. We're paying him so much money for him to at least pretend he's a top footballer and he can't even do that.

Martial - Rashford - Mata front three against Arsenal

Martial Rashford Mata
Pogba Herrera
Carrick

Thank you Wazza lad

I would love it if Mourinho refuses to protect him in public.

Hmmm. You might be on to something, thanking him like that. This is a better version of him giving up the two penalties for "the greater good" as his supporters like to say.

Bestie Robbo Whiteside McGrath, in fact all the footballers up to the 90s were on the piss on the friday night and played sat afternoon.

I won't even be this vexed if he wasn't nursing an injury with a few days to an important match!

Even if your claims are true, those players were up against players who also drank heavily. This is 2016, some managers go as far as cutting out condiments like ketchup, some cut out fruit juices, some cut out fizzy drinks. A professional athlete in this day and age that regularly indulges himself in alcohol is going into a gun fight with a water pistol.

The 90s. 2 decades ago. It's a different game these days.

Wayne Rooney. Born in the wrong generation, like those pre teens who comment on old songs in YouTube, moaning over the state of pop music "these days."

I think Wayne has explained himself with these pictures perfectly - in his head he's already retired and no longer a top, top player with the right mentality. At 250k a week WE deserve much better, and I'm betting Jose's looking at this with a squad of impressionable younger athletes and thinking feck this.

Doesnt take care of himself the way a professional footballer is required to these days. It is evident in his body shape his speed and his touch. Could you imagine Mata going on an all night p*ss up like this on international duty. The guy is overpaid, over weight and is a disgrace.

It's not about Rooney only though. I don't think Wilshere being caught having a smoke once in a while should have the kind of backlash it does either.

Its ridiculous the lengths some people go to protect this guys. Some dude on the Rooney thread had a pop because George Best also drank donkey years ago! I don't know which is ridiculous, that he compared the eras or compare him with George Best!

It's about timing and extent. There's no excuse for getting smashed days before a big match where the team would be counting on you even more than usual with Ibra out.

That looks like one of those drunken facebook photos that you insist your friends take down after a night on the lash :lol:

He really doesnt help himself does he? At least cover up the fecking England gear.
You wonder if the F.A. saw these and were furious and he was sent home with the "injury".

I don't think he would have trained today anyway if he played for England last night.

Well if any of this is even halfway true then I reckon he has played his last game for England.

You can't have your captain getting pissed up in the middle of international week and then have to send him home. Clearly, if he is not captain, he is not in the team.

I hope that this is all just 'Sunshit' as this would be a bad way to end his England career.

If most of them were doing it, it was more of a level playing field, with completely different fitness requirements. Any top footballer who does that now is seriously disadvantaging himself.

Those pictures clearly suggest it was true. The issue now is, if that's why he was sent home or he's really injured.

His PR has come to say that Rooney is sad that his gesture of goodwill has been used against him. Apparently, he just took pictures with fans that asked for autographs...

...and fell into a pool of beer!

It is about Rooney, you'd defend him if he set fire to an orphanage, he's captain for club and country and is currently being heavily criticised for his lack luster performances. What kind of mind set does that portray?

As hilarious as it is, earning a fortune a week and being captain for both our club and country and he does this during international week. Disgrace

If he could justify it with world class performances, but it shows he is past it on the field since ages. Seems to thrive off it though.
