Wayne Rooney withdraws from England squad, minor knee injury

Fergie had to collect Keane from the police station in the early hours of the morning after a session turned violent.

This is tame in comparison. The big difference is the publics/fans reaction to such happenings.

Not to mention Rooney himself was dropped on boxing day for drinking too much the previous day.

That's true. Although you have to admit you'd be loving this if it was Liverpool who were going through all the drama we have so far this season.

Honestly stuff like this doesn't even register with me. The rotating door policy on players and managers since Fergie is embarrassing I agree.

I said before (and got some stick for it) that actually I found it funny, as did my pals. Maybe it's an age thing. I'm so bored of modern day footballers that a top player behaving like a normal bloke was actually refreshing.

I don't care if it's a players day off or not, when you're a top level athlete your job is to keep yourself in top shape, and that stretches outside of work hours. Modern fitness levels are so high you just can't get away with not taking it seriously. Goes for Rooney or any other player.

Phil Neville chats so much rubbish! So many sports personalities do this every day. Heck, some footballers go to visit fans and treat them to a day out. Just because they are not PL players it doesn't make the front news. Does that make them less noble than Wayne Rooney? Useless waste of a tweet!

Classic Rooney. The images were inappropriate lol. Not the behaviour.

"I am apologising whole heartedly for the inappropriate pics, I should not have allowed myself to get photographed whilst steaming drunk"

Anyone got the number of a slow boat??.....

You've got to laugh haven't you.

Rooney would like to apologise on behalf of the fans who took photos of him while he was absolutely wankered on England duty*

*Day off, while in a hotel paid for by the FA, wearing National Team attire.

I bet his England teammates won't be happy to have their free time scrutinised because of their 'captain's behaviour...

And Jose better have a word with Wayne and leave the FA out of this. I'll lose all faith if he defends Rooney's antics whilst saying we've got a 'culture' problem. He'll lose all authority as I can imagine the other players thinking, 'he's throwing us under the bus but Rooney is majorly unprofessional and he defends him?' It would set a bad precedent.

At least Rooney's apologised, until the next time it happens of course...

most of them are probably thinking "Thank god it was not me caught on my night out"

You'd think with all the criticism he's had this season which regularly focuses on how he's never been disciplined off the pitch and it's catching up with him on it he'd be on his best behaviour.

Hopefully he's gone in the summer.

People citing Robbo etc are missing the point. It's a different era in which both football wages and the speed of the game have increased enormously. We expect better, particularly from a senior player whose last remaining attribute (apparently) is leadership. Even Keane gave up not long after 99 and he was a product of the old culture. Rooney has absolutely no excuse and to do this at a time when everyone is pointing out his premature physical decline just shows either he is stupid, lacks any self-control or doesn't care. Whichever way, he needs to be shown the door so he can go on the piss at someone else's expense.

Feck right off. It was a day off and he was a full week away from his next game.

There is nothing wrong with it.

He had another game a few days later vs Spain which he conveniently got injured for. Obviously was in no fit state and Southgate is just protecting him.

It just confirms what we've always known about Rooney that he's not disciplined off the pitch and it's caught up with him. Better players than Rooney (Ronaldinho, Ronaldo) had similar issues and clubs knew it was time to move them on. So should we.

If Jose defends him, then it doesn't matter whether or not any one else gets caught doing the same thing. How can he have a go at them then?

I don't care if Rooney wants to drink himself into oblivion, I just worry about the example he's setting for the rest of the team, and especially our very young lads.

I can't make up my mind if I care about this

I suppose due to his form etc... he should have know better, but if he was off the back of a run of good form I wouldn't give two flying fecks

My cousin's brother's cousin's brother said that his regular pubs have moved all of the top shelf liquors to the right side of the bar to maximize revenue from our Wayne since he never looks left.
I'll get my coat.

People need to understand, he has a contract and is fully entitled to whatever is within that contract. Being pissed (or not as may be the case) whilst on a day off from England duty, will in no way shape or form affect his contract with United.
Some just make it seem to think the club can wave a magic wand and he'll be gone. Well it's not going to happen.

If he was injured why didn't he just go straight home?

He's still with the team at the hotel and maybe due to go back later in the week. What's the big deal?
"Incident."

It's a bloke having an unspecified amount of alcohol on a Saturday night. It's not an incident.

Feck right off. It was a day off and he was a full week away from his next game.

This. It's blown way out of proportion. He obviously knew he won't be playing and then decided to go drink. It's a day off on the Sunday with no training and his next match is 6 days away, it really won't affect his performances.
most of them are probably thinking "Thank god it was not me caught on my night out"

A lot of footballers will be doing the same stuff but they're just smart enough not to get caught on camera.

Wasn't there a drunken brawl with Schmiechel in a hotel hallway?

Yeah and if you read Keane's book you discover there were countless other incidents involving himself and that he was just one member of the United drinking culture when he arrived.

Unfortunately fans have changed since then. They now demand a monk style existence from their footballer. Train and go home. No fun. At best they can have a meal.

It's the Ronaldo effect.

No wonder he's in such SHITE form, can you imagine what his diet it like?

I go to the gym regularly / take it quite serious and I can't perform to the level I usually do after I've had a few drinks (not drunk) a couple days beforehand or when I've eaten poorly.

It's damn well clear why he has declined in this manor. Old school British drinking football culture at its finest.

He should step down from United at the end of the season if he has any dignity. His hinderence to this club is VERY damaging.

Unprofessional to get hammered, yes, but the posts about him having a serious drink problem or being the next Gazza are a massive jump to a wild conclusion. Nobody on here has a clue about how much he drinks, how often he drinks or even what he's like as a person.

Apparently his mate, Phil Nevile said in the Salford FC documentary that players should not be drinking a week before matches. So....

How do you know this? For all we know he trained perfectly normally for United. Or maybe he just picked up a knock and was being rested for the Spain game. A lot of players don't play entire games or conveniently withdraw from friendlies.

Yea but only because those Salford players don't give their shirts to sick kids. If they do that then professionalism doesn't matter.

That's not what I meant. It's not a contractual issue (maybe it would be if it were the day before a United match) but it is another factor in deciding whether to take the inevitable financial hit and push him out of United.

Someone should please play the video for him.
No one is saying players can't drink on a night out. That's not what is rumoured to have happened to Rooney. They said he could barely walk at 6 am ffs. Wtf is wrong with you people?
How many times do you hear top players at other clubs being drunk to a stupor during the season. To make is worse, the player in question has unperformed for ages and has previous for the same thing.

So you're saying the club should pay out his entire contract, as that is what it'd take. That would be a massive financial hit for the club all in one go.
Also have to consider the guy is marketable, so makes money for the club. Would hit the bottom line very hard to force him out.

Minor injury my arse. Massive hangover more like. No wonder he's a fat git who is in terrible physical condition for a professional athlete.

Because he's been straight back into training this week and is reportedly fit for the Arsenal game, if Southgate had planned all along to rest him he could have just said so.

No, I am saying the club should encourage him to leave. I don't think Rooney is hard-faced enough to do a Winston Bogarde although we may have to throw in a sweetener.

I'm not fussed about the example and whatnot, but he was starting to look in good shape and I doubt getting wankered helps at all.

To which people are you referring to?

Are you taking a story in the media to be 100% reliable and informed. Maybe you're one of those people.

United players are huge click bait, obviously Rooney attended a wedding had a few glasses of wine and went to bed at 1am is hardly going to be shocking enough.

Who was he out with? Not seen any pictures of any other England players with him.
