Wayne Rooney withdraws from England squad, minor knee injury

Klopp really came out defending Rooney for this. He doesn't have to but he did it anyway. It must be nice to have a manager like that who really stands by you in media. No wonder his players give absolutely everything for him.

He didn´t defend him. He said in the old days players were drinking and smoking. You know the days, when the outfielders ran less than a goalie does today. Maybe there you have your explanation why England is getting left behind and chronically underachieving.

Ah so England are shit as all the players are smoking and drinking?
Glad you cleared that up.
Has Rojo taken on British citizenship since joining United, as he likes a night out and a smoke or two?

Not sure Rojo is a great example to use seeing as he is not highly rated

I think in general British and Irish players do not lead as healthy a lifestyle to others

Generally do not lead a healthy lifestyle compared to whom? Ronaldo?

Must be awesome living on the continent for players, as they all don't drink, nor smoke and all have this fantastically healthy lifestyle.

Whom would you like me to use as an example? Maybe Ozil, highly rated and possibly the best player in the league this season, I've seen picture of him smoking. Is that as he resides in England, as it's a cultural thing?

Some complete Bollox floating round about lifestyle, next you'll be telling me all Aussies are rip and enjoy a great healthy outdoor life style....
Player do shit they shouldn't, they're human. Most are not dumb enough to get pictures taken of them, or the culture of the place where they live isn't all how can I sell my story to the media for 15 minutes of fame.

To those defending him, it's probably a good time to tell you the whole "why shouldn't he drink on a night off?" defence isn't working.

He's known to have been pissed as feck at the UNICEF dinners and Ed Sheeran's(cnut) gig for a start.

If you search "Rooney drunk" there's numerous stories of him being absolutely wasted.

Apparently Southgate is pissed because he told Rooney to go to bed

He probably was headed for bed, but made a small detour to pick up two desperate bridesmaids. Gotta do some cardio...what a professional...but only cowgirl.

Seems a bit of a ridiculous reason to strip him of the captaincy. Should really be done because the manager doesn't think he'll be a regular, or when Southgate is actually appointed

If the manager has told him to go to bed and instead of that he's gone and got absolutely hammered and then stupidly posed for photo's then I think it's fair for him to be stripped of the armband.

That's without getting into how fecking terrible he's been for 18 months at least.

Think it was clear they got given the day after off. Obviously you would expect the players to act responsibly. From the sounds of it plenty of them went out but Rooney seemed to get into a state the others weren't into. Not sure why he still has his England gear on mind you.

Maybe it is fair, but I'd rather see hin stripped of the captaincy for footballing reasons, rather than hiding behind this.

Well despite efforts to reincarnate him as Oliver Reed he probably is a lightweight.

Been playing two or three times a week plus training for the last 13 years. So where he fits in these monster drinking sessions I don't know.

I reckon in reality he's drank much less in his life than the average 30 year old.

This is true, but there's a limit, and there's a time. He's playing shit, he's the highest paid player in the PL (I know...), and he's the captain of England.

Well, there is an argument for that too, you know.

I think he did this on purpose to create an excuse to account for the inevitable end to his Manchester and England careers.

Pretty sure the Currant Bun's doing it's usual click-bait best to secure as much Ad profit from this one looking at the sensationalist Tweet backed up with … er, nothing!

In the mean-time Klopp and Koeman come out of this with enhanced managerial and man-management reputations - class acts both IMHO! It'll be interesting how the Gloomy One deals with this in the presser today.

In reality though, perhaps stepping down from the England team will give Rooney the ability to focus his efforts more successfully on United going forward (as long as he spends his down-time more productively that is).

Rooney supporters are eerily similar to Trump supporters. They will spin a positive story out of any scandal.

Someone said that this brings Rooney closer to the fans??

Someone else said, since George Best and keane did it its fine?

I can assure if that was Memphis Depay..these same posters would gladly pay for his ticket out of Manchester.

He is the Captain of England and United. He is supposed to be a better example.

Some of those pictures make me sad that ..this is our Captain.

Anyone else think United should make a huge meal of this and find a way of terminating the fat bastard's contract.. or threaten him with the possibility of doing so and get rid of him in January.

No but I would look to offload him as his wage isn't representing value for money (far from it) but he deserves more respect as he has been a huge part in our most successful era. Respect due but the countdown has hopefully begun for the summer.

It will turn ugly. Court case and everything.

England footballers are generally very professional. Their shortcomings are not to do with lifestyle. You don't make it at a top club if you're not an elite athlete. Too many players to take your place. Look at Lallana, Kane and Henderson - extremely fit footballers who are squeezing every bit of talent out of themselves. Rooney may well be an exception rather than the rule.

That's an extraordinary sentiment. A microcosm of internetness right there.

I think there is absolutely no need. United (and more specifically Mourinho) have handled the Rooney situation superbly. At the start of the season, dropping Rooney would have caused a huge fallout. Now, even with Ibra out nobody would bat an eyelid if Rooney doesn't start against Arsenal.

All of this while (in public at least) defending and supporting him at every turn. He is on his way out as a key player for the club. The only question is whether he takes a reduced role or leaves the club altogether.

It'll be embarrassing if England move on from Rooney before United have.

So devastated that he's doing his best to prolong it by going on the piss until the sunrise.

All you need to do is watch that Salford documentary where Phil Neville says professional players shouldn be drinking the week of the game. So how come all of a sudden it is acceptable. Oh I forgot it's Wayne Rooney. Sick of the sound and sight of the Nevilles and Scholes
