Right, so been watching him play this season (whenever he's had the chance). Is it just me or is he slightly over-rated (at his current ability) - maybe good enough in the future, but nowhere near ahead of established first teamers and needs plenty of work on his game at his current ability IMHO

any views?

He's not ahead of established first teamers  At best he is fourth choice. Had a decent game, if you've considered to be poor and come away with an assist then it's not so bad. After Giggs went off the entire attack went on a lull, what is certain about Welbeck he needs service.

some posters have been claiming he should be - or so I am lead to believe

I've been away for a week but no one would claim he should be ahead of Rooney, Berbatov or Tevez. Artistic license used I reckon.

Much better than Campbell. He has a brain.

Im still not sure though, once I decide if his technique is just good or great, then I will be able to tell you all if he will make it.

He's going to have a future as a winger... people slateme for it but in the reserves and Academy he played his best football coming off the flank.

Regardless i'm excited by him, he's still young, like Rafael & everyone else we need patience because the finished product may still be a decade away.

He'll be a gem, i'm more than excited by his potential

Has lots of bad touches, but usually departs the match having contributed something well in the final third. Tonight it was the first time pass to O'Shea.

Not England's best young striker, but our best young English striker. Except Rooney obviously.

No he hasn't. In fact I'm struggling to think of a game he's played for the reserves on the wing.

really? hehe - that told me

Campbell reminds me of a raw Defoe when I see him play/finish

Coming off the flank doesn't mean he played on the wing.

He did it a bit today as well, showed his crossing ability.

Personally I thought he was completely anonymous on the wing today and it was no coincidence we couldn't get the ball off them until he went up front again and Ronnie dropped back at which point we became the superior side.

I'm not so sure about that.

Campbell has pace to burn, Welbeck has been invisible the last two games.

He played pretty good in the first half, even created a goal and had some nice touches. If Carroll hadn't made a good save, this thread wouldn't have been created. When Giggs went off, the whole team went on a lull. One slight cause for concern is that Welbeck isn't really equipped to play a full 90 minutes at the moment which is why he generally gets taken off.

He wasn't the only player to have been invisible in the first leg against Derby. His defence is that as a centre-forward he lacked any kind of support from Tevez, Scholes or Anderson that night. He's 18 years old, can't do it all on his own.

He's young, he's raw and he has bags of potential which will come through even more with better experience. He's shown us what he can do this season (cracking goal against Stoke anyone?). He shouldn't be ahead of the established first teamers and nobody has said otherwise.

He´s only 18 and just starting to break through and he hasn´t done much wrong in the games he´s played. Obviously not fully established (he´s only 18 ffs) but he´s shown enough to suggest he might have a future at United.

Good post, he badly faded in the second half though.

Berbatov's been "invisible" for large parts of the season, and he's not 17-18 years old, and has played a few games this season. Does this mean you're unsure of Berbatov being the better player?

Another learning experience for him. Welbeck really needed some chances of his own in the match. He played fairly well in the first half but became more isolated in the second. But he is a very good prospect for the future. Ive seen he has better ball control, pace and balance than he showed tonight. His finishing is also pretty good when he's on form.

Completely.

Campbell is useless. Ask Spurs fans. Hes an athlete, no brain or vision. Useless for a team like us.

Sorry mate, thats bollocks. Spurs fans rate him and alot of them are confused why he isn't being played. Ask any Hull fans what they make of him.

Wellbeck had a very quiet game tonight. Apart from that goal at Stoke, i've not seen enough to understand what the fuss is about. He does have time on his side mind you and we probably are asking far too much from him too soon.

This thread has got nothing to do with Berbatov, you'll find the answer lies somewhere between RedSky's post and Flawless' post ie Campbell is not 'shit' and Welbeck is still very young and both have potential.

Didn't catch the Boro game then? He was brilliant that night. A bit patchy today. Some good involvements when up front but he could've shown more hunger when on the right.

Not over rated in the slightest, people are more excited by his potential than his current performances, of course hes not going to set the world on fire now, how old is he, 18? I cant recall too many players who set the world alight at that age.

I for one thought he had a great game tonight, his link up with his team mates was excellent and he proved to be very calm under pressure. His technique in terms of receiving the ball could use some work, but dont see why he cant improve on that, hes got plenty of time. He is definately one to keep

He still needs time.

But I have no doubts about his potential.

Gonna be a class player

Paz, who puts him ahead of established first teamers?

No posters have ever claimed it.

Nor have you been led to believe it.

You've just made that bit up.

He is better than a then 18 year old Campbell BUT he is not better than him at present. Physically Welbeck looks sorted and he will have bulked up even more by the time he hits 20. His game, however, looks far from finished. His anticipation, positioning, decision making and technique on the ball (i.e first touch, dribbling, etc.) need major work on. Granted he is still a young un and attributes such as decision making and positioning will gradually improve. Watching the game yesterday I was slightly disappointed that he seemed reluctant to use his pace to be a bit more direct and barge his way through. He always seemed more intent on laying the ball off to someone else.

Overrated? Yes BUT he is entitled to it after all he is one of our own and its been a looong time coming.

He should learn from Rooney. Not the temper, but the hustling, the intelligence, the movement off the ball, etc. I see a resemblance in their ability, they are both supremely talented and uses the ball well, there were some times Danny lost the ball clumsily while taking on a defender but that's due to inexperience and possibly nerves. He wasn't as effective as i would've liked but Derby were parking the bus and defending in layers, so it was always going to be difficult for him with 2-3 people marking him every time he's near the ball.

Overrated? By whom? Most people on this thread are having a go at him while the others are just saying he is a good player who Fergie rates extremely highly. I don't think I've seen a homegrown striker Fergie has rated higher than Welbeck. No one thinks he is the best player in the world but come on if an 18 year old kid was playing as many matches for the likes of Barca or Madrid he would be lauded on here.
