Westminster Politics

This sort of thing is part of why we're so fecked. Our political culture has been consumed by this self-serving idea pushed by career politicians that there is some distinction between someone's 'true self' and their actions as an elected representative. The dominant strand in Labour has no issue palling around in the bar with people who, seconds earlier, voted to send asylum seekers to Rwanda, or cut benefits for the poorest, or shield Johnson from accountability to save their own careers.

Politicians with radically different beliefs still being friends is actually an extremely healthy thing for democracy. The opposite (as we're now seeing in the US) is extremely dangerous.

I too love when politicians care so little about the impact of government bills on people's lives that they can pal around with the very people who propose and then vote for them.

Really warms the soul.

What’s the actual plan here? To privatise all of this? This sort of cuts to the civil service will literally cripple the country. As if it isn’t already in a bad enough state.

Such extremely healthy democracy:

Are they really saying that our Rishi isn't the fiscal genius he was made out to be? Shocking.

Contrast the complete indifference from the govt. about these squandered billions to the giddy zeal of ending the Universal Credit £20 top-up as soon as they could.

Politicians who can be sociable with each other despite ideological differences are far more likely to be able to find compromises and actually work together when needed, than politicians who hate each other and consider each other the enemy. How is the current situation in the US not showing everyone this?

That’s not what the tweet says though is it? The tweet is basically saying politicians are not following their principles and would rather stay in power.

In a speech at the National Prayer Breakfaston Thursday, President Joe Biden had kind words for Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, who he called his friend.

"Mitch, I don't want to hurt your reputation, but we really are friends," Biden said, addressing McConnell. "And that is not an epiphany we're having at the moment. You're a man of your word, you're a man of honor. Thank you for being my friend."

The political failures and inability of the United States to do anything positive isn’t down the lack of friend requests on Facebook.

Exactly it's a question of personal accountability rather than a shared understanding that it's all part of a Westminster game. When an MP can vote through a despicable piece of legislation but clock off and just blame the leader then accountability is quickly lost. Colleagues should hold each other accountable.

Kentonio's premise is incorrect as MPs are professionals and the absence of a pally culture isn't enemies.

We underestimate the true value of the royal family to the UK economy.
I have a close family member who lives in London and the number of overseas visitors who come to the UK especially because of the Queen is significant. As is their expenditure.
If for no other reason than that, they are literally worth their weight in gold.
Nothing wrong with a constitutional monarchy, it's the lack of a written constitution that undermines it...because of this the UK involvement in a United States of Europe was always going to be problematical. Brexit was inevitable, but in my opinion neither side knew what they were voting for in the long run. No doubt all will become clearer when the time for succession comes. Being able to do pomp and circumstance is worth millions to the UK economy.

Yup, hard to make interest rate swaps sexy.

Business is often oiled via personal relationships. Personally I don't have any time at all for the idea that MP's with opposing ideologies should be shamed for being friends. Honestly I'm sick of this idea that you're only allowed to be friends with people who pass a series of subjective morality tests. All that achieves is to reinforce an echo chamber where no-one listens to opposing viewpoints.

A load of MPs from different parties will have worked together on multiple committees for years and it's a bit bizarre to expect them to behave in a completely tribalistic way 24/7.

You're free to be friends with as many people of dubious morals as you like.

Most of us will distance ourselves from such people because morals are a basic standard from which character is judged not some woke benchmark.

'Yeah he's just voted to gun down refugee boats and he uses the N word but he tells a great anecdote over a pint'.

Imagine being born on 3rd base.

The cost of failure is zero. Do whatever you like and live without consequence. I’d love it.

However, I’d probably have been an odious Cnut like him in this video. The confidence and sense of entitlement is galling. It’s somewhat impressive when you see Greta Thunberg have a single point of focus and an expectation that the world will change for her. Seeing this little scrote be that confident about riding the free market capitalism horse to a never quite touchable finish line… gross.

Thanks for sharing. Had no idea that he was a cnut from such an early age.

Not sure I really understand what the benefits of a written constitution would be in 2022.

Hopefully they can appeal and get this overturned but from my understanding judges are becoming increasingly reluctant to go against political decisions by the government. Presumably because they are walking on egg shells about the potential reforms..

This government are very toxic to the health of the country's Court system in many different ways
