Where do you expect us to finish this season?

I have no idea who will win the league this season. We're not going to repeat our 11 point margin, that's for damn sure.

I've previously argued long and hard that luck plays no part in the final standings but I think the top of the table will be so tight this season that the league could be decided by really fine margins. Wouldn't be surprised if there's just a handful of points between 1st and 5th. Nor would I be terribly surprised over whichever of those five slots we occupy. Actually, finishing lower than Spurs would surprise me. It's a long way short of impossible though.

Yep, Arsenal neither.

Anywhere in the top 3 though, it'l be incredibly tight between the top 3 imo.

Not far off the truth. Was going to start bigging up Spurs but I sicked up in my mouth a little at the thought of Glaston reading it and the sentence withered on the vine.

There's always the possibility I've been sufficiently obnoxious for him to put me on ignore but I just can't take that risk.

My origianl thought was somewhere in the top 3, most likely 2nd or 3rd. I have to admit to being a bit bothered by our start and the use of the squad and now am thinking that perhaps there is a very good chance of us finishing outside the top 4. Will certainly be an experience for us it if happens. Going to be long tough season for us.

There's a few things in life you can rely on... like the sun rising on a morning, Anderson being fat, traffic cones bieng put out on the M62 on a weeknight when there's a United game on for non-existance road works.... and Spurs finishing 5th.

They're very good at it, why doubt their ability to do it again?

I expect us to finish either as champions or second having been genuine challengers during the run in. As opposed to a distant second to a runaway team like City were last season.

More old man advice, for you young pups:

DONT have ANY expectations. A managers first season is tough. Even one who's inherited the champions. Just back him, hope we do well, and keep the faith

I would echo this. You never know what could happen, especially after Christmas. Hopefully we can get a good run going now starting with tomorrow night.

I'd expect us to finish in the top four at least. Anything more than that is a bonus really this season. It will take time to gel with the new manager, so we are bound to drop more points over the season. And then the competition for the title is going to be far closer this season, Both City and Chelsea should be pushing all the way and Arsenal could be a bit of an outside chance as well.

Anything below 3rd would be a really bad start to Moyes' career here IMHO, the squad is certainly good enough to match City and Chelsea, let alone Arsenal and Spurs. Call me spoilt, but despite all the changes in the managerial team we still have the same squad that pissed all over the league last year and have added Fellaini and Zaha. We will improve over the next few weeks, not worried yet.

It feels like a strange season with nothing seemingly set in stone. At the beginning we all felt we knew who the top 3 would be but none have looked particularly great and it's not that unrealistic for arsenal to finish above one of them either.

So yeah, I think the top 5 should be closer together this season but I expect us to finish somewhere among the top few places and challenge strongly for the title.

I want us to win, that's a given. I think we will finish in the top 3, however, content with top anything in the top 4. We need Champions League football, without it, things could turn to shit very quickly.

However, there is a part of me (a very small part) that would like to see us finish lower so it can't feck a few 'fans' off. It would be nice to see some jump across to City or Real Madrid. It's the one positive of what is looking like a tough season, we will find out who the true reds are.

2nd or 3rd I think dependent on how Mourinho uses Mata. Arsenal have a brilliant starting 11 but will struggle in terms of squad depth. Spurs will choke like a first time hooker as usual.

Resigned to finishing third or maybe fourth. It could be all about next season.

It's Citys league imo this year. The fight will be for 2nd and I expect Chelsea, ourselves, Arsenal and Tottenham all fighting for it. People are dismissing Spurs, but they've had a very good start to the season in fixtures they did badly in last season. I also think they'll make a January signing or two to bolster their squad.

We haven't really shown anything yet to instill much convidence in retaining the title, but it's still way too early. We've had a ridiculous start fixture wise, Moyes still seems unsure about his starting 11 and that raises the point that we haven't yet fielded our best starting 11 in the Premier League.

Of course, as defending champions, a draw at home to Chelsea being as good as it gets against the better opposition just isn't good enough, but lets see how many points we can pick up with this easy run ahead of us now.

Top 3. I didn't feel worried after the Liverpool loss but the City match was so disappointing. But still, this squad that has changed so little from last year can't have lost its fighting spirit. May just need a bit more time.

Still saying 3rd for United, possibly 4th but no lower.

As much as I can understand people's pessimism about our chances, anyone thinking City are nailed-on needs to remember their away troubles. They've certainly not gone away yet, with that Cardiff defeat being up there with the most pitiful efforts under Mancini.

On current form i would like it to be in the top 3, however if we can't get our act together then top six looks likely. Thats my honest assessment.

It's a very open season IMO. At the start I thought we'd finish 3rd behind City and Chelsea but last match apart neither Chelsea nor City showed to me anything particularly fearsome. Kompany's fitness however seems to be the key to how City go. Arsenal and Spurs are playing with momentum but I think at the end of it all experience will be critical. We've made a habit of winning games on the back of poor/average performances and you can't purely put that down to SAF, it's a long season and my only worry at the moment is our setup for big games. Ideally we need to ask more questions of the opposition but last weekend screamed out for a midfield 3 to deal with Toure, it's hard to make a sweeping judgement quite yet though as I don't feel Moyes knows his best team.

I'd be shocked if this squad dropped out of the top 2. Especially if it was a switch with Mourinho's current Chelsea.

I think one thing we can guarantee is a lot of 'shocks'. Southampton winning at Anfield, a shock. Villa winning at Arsenal, a shock. United losing 4-1 to anyone, fairly shocking. It's all about how teams react and some are biting the dust a bit too early on here.

So much time to come good so I'm definitely sticking to top 2 until at least Xmas which is usually a telling period for United. The next 5 league games could shoot us back to the top..and it's classic of this squad to go on a good run after a big blow. I just can't see players like Vidic, Carrick, Rooney and van Persie not doing the business. Boasting that core is amazing, but it's up to the manager to complement them with a good unit around them.

I'm most excited about next season. Not that I'm writing us off now (I expect us to do well this season) but I feel this is the time when Moyes will see who is prepared to give everything for the team, and who isn't, who's grown complacent etc etc. I think Moyes will prove to be as ruthless in his big-decision-making as Sir Alex often was; for example, Moyes' recent remark about Fellaini being expected to pass to 'the good players' hints that he won't play favourites & is under no illusions about what needs to be done long-term.

Its worth pointing out that our title rivals have all dropped points where they shouldn't have already this season. I still believe that we are the best equipped team in the league to win the matches that we should be winning, and therefore we will be up there challenging.

I would predict finishing 2nd behind City, but I also wouldn't be at all suprised if we won the league. People are over-reacting to a horrible opening run of fixtures.

Agreed. It would be a lot easier to predict after our next 5 league games, which are all eminently winnable.

That said, if City build on their performance on Sunday, they'll win the league IMO.

Looking back at this thread now, I wasn't expecting us to struggle as badly. I reckon predictions and expectations have changed a lot since september.
