My heart says Forlan but I honestly think it will be Xavi. He's believed to have had a great tournament (whereas I thought he was ok) and he was a very important player for Barcelona towards the end of the season with so many assists and general creativity to guarantee another league title

47 goals doesn't make you the BPITW. Ruud scored 44 in 02/03.

Its the goals in the big games which count and Messi bottled it 3 times when it counted the most.

Sjneider is the bpitw right now. Anybody who can't see that has been living under a shell. Champions league winner and World cup finalist being the catalyst for the Netherlands charge. He deserves it above any other player, even Xabi.

You cut down a 60 game season to 3 games? What's the point even showing up then.

What about the goals against Valencia, the Final of the World Club cup,Sevilla in their stadium, Madrid in the Burnabeu and the dismantling of Arsenal

People can talk about Xavi all they want, but for Barca Messi is their saviour

Xavi or Sneijder for me. Either would be a fair choice.

If Messi wins, it will be a total sham. He has simply not influenced enough success for the teams he plays for.

Messi will be like Zidane - always in the top three or five just because voters look at highlights and namesake. Zidane's Juve only won the league in 2003, was outshined by teammates Nedved and Buffon, but he took home the FIFA award.

Did you follow LaLiga this season? Week in and week out Messi was performing for Barca, it was machine like, more consistent than Zizou has ever produced in his entire career, what ever he receives he certainly deserves it.

People have short term memories, the season didn't end that long ago.

Zidane never played with Nedved nor Buffon

That's not how the voting works Boss. You ought to have it realized by now.He failed against Inter and in the WC.The expectation were high but he failed in some of the most highly watched matches.

Ugh... I meant Zidane at Real... with Figo and Ronaldo... They only won the league but he still took home the FIFA award while Nedved, Ruud, Scholes, Buffon were all hands down better that year.

It's voted for my players and managers, you have to realise that Messi did his thing basically consistently all season, always stealing the headlines, there's no doubt that they would be aware of his exploits.

Another key factor in these awards is how they perform before the winner is selected, I'm talking about the start of next season and some of the CL group stages. I have no doubt Messi would be in rapist mode to remind everyone what he did the previous season.

I honestly think he's going to win it.

It's Messi, Sneijder, Xavi making up the top 3. Would be nice to see Forlán in the top 5 and Rooney with them.

Take Ronaldinho in 05/06, he was by far the best player in the world up until the World Cup started. He led his club to a glorious league+ CL double with some truly outstanding performance but it only took a feck up during the WC to kill his chances of winning individual silverware.
Cannavaro won it and it tells you that whatever happens during the season is lightweight in comparison to the WC.
Messi might start the season brilliantly but he'll always have and need Xavi in his team, no matter well he does his success will never be seperated from Xavi's influence.
Xavi has a bigger chance to win it than Messi I think, then there is also Snejider and Villa.

Very good point, and Ronaldinho was robbed in my opinion, no way did Zidane deserve to finish ahead of him especially, however I don't think Messi's world cup was as bad as Ronaldinho's.

This one is quite subjective but I also don't think Ronaldnho reached the club heights for Barca as Messi did last season. Despite his amazing performances in key games, I actually thought he was better the 04/05 season but it's close.

Xavi consistantly good for Barca and Spain.

Sneijder or Messi other wise.

The system is a bit unfair but it's how it is.If you perform well during the big stages (Messi was expected to perform better and not to disappear like he did against Argentina), you're more likely to be rewarded than if you were the most consistent throughout the entire season

As I said earlier, this WC probably helped highlight this. Messi still looked a good player, but it was clear that a fair chunk of his world-beating form at Barca is down to Xavi pulling the strings.

If anything, it has highlighted that in relative terms Messi is overrated and Xavi underrated.

You're nearly as bad as Frankly when it comes to Messi.

It'll be Xavi, and deservedly so.

It simply has to be Messi. It saddens me to see everyone falling into the same old trap of forgetting about a player who had an unbelievable season just because he had a disappointing World Cup, or pushing others to the fore for the reverse reason.

It's just the truth though, how can you be consistently spectaclar over a year and be robbed over a few games

Anyways let's just see what happens

There's no way Xavi has been the best player in the world this past year or any of the years before it

Xavi or Messi

A lot of people are forgetting the gargantuanly impressive performances of Messi last season. He could still be favourite.

Eh? Wesley had an excellent season for Inter Milan, winning the treble, and he had an excellent World cup unlike Messi. The same could be argued for Robben.

Still find it very strange how the consensus is that Xavi and Sneijder were excellent at the World Cup. Sneijder was a great matchwinner but he didn't do it with any individual brilliance or impressive general play, I don't think. He was very quiet for the first few games too. Xavi as always moved the ball about as well as anyone in the competition but he was further forward than normal but struggled to penetrate the defence in the way he should have, or even usually does. He was good but some way off the top of his game.

I'd love Forlan to win it, and I think he's got a realistic chance of being in the top 5 which would be such a great achievement.

It'd be Messi, Sneijder and Xavi top three for me with Ronaldo and Forlan rounding off the top 5.

But I think it'll be Sneijder, Xavi, Messi in the end.

Suprisingly i actually think Messi should win it.

When Ronaldo won it in 1997 it was off the back of a season in which he scored 47 goals for his club.

Messi matched that and it seems to be forgotten just how good he was all season.

The fact Forlan got the Golden Ball for the World Cup pleased me because it went against who won everything. Now if it goes on who wins the CL or the World Cup then i imagine an Inter player will get it but the fact that Forlan was the best at the world cup makes me think the overall best player was still Messi for the season.

Messi
Sneijder
Xavi
Iniesta

It will probably be one of them. They have had outstanding seasons and performed quite well at the World Cup as well. That will surely put them right at the top of the shortlist. Unfortunately I think Rooney's chances evaporated along with England.

This is why the start of next season up untill the awards is so important, because Wayne has a chance to remind everybody of his expliots of last season.

Yes, if I wanted to be pedantic. I would obviously lose

But Robben was the kep player in the Bayern team that won the league and domestic cup, and got them to the Champions League final, such achievements are deserving of credit

Not best player in the world credit, Robben needs to sit his ass down somewhere, or get in this long line

Should be Messi. He's had an absolutely phenomenal season.

I thought you were saying that Robben had the edge on Messi because, like Sneijder, he had a great WC.

I don't think either covered themselves in glory in the WC.
