WWC19 | Final: USA v Netherlands

Players go off for safety due to a thunderstorm. Will come back when they can.

Match stopped at 0-0 after 71 minutes. Chile's goalkeeper has probably been the most important player on the pitch - Sweden haven't done much to make her work, but she's been there whenever needed.

I’m sure the stadium announcer said that the game would restart at 20:12. That’s 20 mins or so away.

EDIT: confirmed, that’s 19:12 BST

I’m not sure of the protocol exactly, I’m sure they will have to play the match to completion though.

Yeah, they do. Same as in Spain. It would restart at 71 minutes, 0-0, same players/subs - even if they have to play the last 19 minutes another day.

But it does look like it can restart this evening now.

Playing 19 minutes another day would be horrendous, you'd be scared to train incase of injury's

I've seen a Liga game restart the next day with about 5 minutes to play! Same kind of reason - they'll generally play through a downpour, even if the pitch has standing water, but they go off for lightning and return when they can to finish it. Not surprised to see FIFA follow the same protocol.

The BBC have put a full explanation of the rule up in their live feed:

iRght then, my esteemed colleagues have been doing some digging on my behalf and it appears Fifa have prepared for such an event.

  • The match shall recommence at the minute at which play was interrupted rather than being replayed in full, and with the same scoreline.
  • The match shall recommence with the same players on the pitch and substitutes available as when the match was abandoned.
  • No additional substitutes may be added to the list of players on the start list.
  • The kick-off time, date and location shall be decided by FIFA.

Players are back on the pitch and the match restarts.

Oh yeah if it's the rules it's the rules, just seems mental for loads of reasons, like, how many fans turn up for 5 minutes? What happens if someone gets injured in training?

I had a fiver on 9 or more match corners, Sweden to win and Sweden to score 2 or more.

Must be my lucky bloody day

So, Thailand, that sounds like it's probably an amazing team. They have a 1m53 defender:lol:

Is team USA so good, because most yanks think football is for girls?

The grass roots support for US girls is crazy. It’s a massive massive thing over there. It’s also linked to big investments into the sport in the 80s/90s. They were well ahead of the curve.

She's not giving that even with VAR? What the feck?

So the women referees are just like the men's. Can't admit they're wrong.

Yeah, that's why it's weird to me that the men aren't very good.

Money. Basketball, baseball, ice hockey, American Football - are all better paid than football, if you're a man. Everything from your TV watching to your family will send you down the most popular track as a kid and the money will drive the dream.

It's different for the women. A college scholarship in US soccer is a prize and it's one of the few women's sports where you can go pro. Investment at the college/youth level for decades has built the US team.

A statement of intent from the US team in that half. Thailand are lucky to be only three down - amazing that some of those attacks didn't end in a goal.
