Luka Modric / Signs for Real Madrid

Looking out for his club? Yes keeping a player that doesn't want to be their is looking out for his club. Maybe he should have kept Berbatov and Carrick too. Unless Spurs are planning to stun the world with signings that will bring them into the top 3, keeping Modric isn't going to make a difference regardless.

We kept a played for one more season when he wanted to leave.

Perhaps they want another shot at finishing in the top 4 with Modric

Fair play. I hope they hold onto him

Yeah, how that did work out for you and Arsenal when you kept Ronaldo and Fabregas? Are you trying to suggest that selling Carrick and Berbatov actually helped the club? When we sold Carrick, we went from losing out on 4th on the last day to just about finishing 5th the next.

With Berbatov, we went from 5th, then 11th and a cup...to 2 points from 8 games. Yep, those sales did the club a whole world of good.

Keeping Modric isn't going to make a difference to what exactly?

Some of you talk as if you agree with those footballers slavery comments ( though you didn't seem to appreciate it when Ronaldo was making them). Modric signed a 6 year contract near the end of last season. When we were nowhere near guaranteed 4th and no longer near the top of the table. Why on earth should we bend to his will as soon as he shows the slightest bit of discontent? Its Modric's fault for being an idiot and giving us all the cards.

True & Spurs will be serious contenders for a top 4 spot next season too. They'll probably be challenging L'pool & Arsenal for it.

Erm, keeping an unsettled player against his will or pocketing £30m+, I know what I would have done if I had been Mr Baldy.

30 million? What are we going to do with that exactly? Buy Jones and Young? Buy Henderson and have 10 million left over? Not have enough to pay for a striker that's played half a season in the league?

You, Villa, City and Arsenal have all kept players against their will in the past few seasons. All of those players have continued to play well.

And besides, as I said in the past, its gotten to the stage now where its about the principle. We sell Modric, that's four players we've sold to clubs in the league in the past 5 years who've been allowed to leave as soon as they showed discontent. Do we want to go back to challenging for 9th with Blackburn? Or do we want to be more? It needs to be about the message.

Well done Glaston if this pans out. Deserved payout coming your way. Stuck to your guns even with loads of abuse aimed at you too.

But I wouldnt make the same bet next summer if I was you.

I reckon this is a plea from Spurs to Modric to stay one more season and then be allowed to leave

1) Modric has five years left on his contract. Ronaldo had three.

2) Ronaldo had wanted to leave for at least the previous two seasons before he eventually moved on.

My point remains valid. Just because a club doesn't want to sell, doesn't mean they won't. Do you think Shitty want to sell Tevez? Actually, bad example, at this point, they probably do.

I don't particularly care in this case, as I have maintained from the start that I don't want Modric. That said, if he would improve Chelski in any way I'd rather he stay put.

I am pretty sure if they felt he would be unsettling in the dressing room they would have sold him.

But if he accepts it then it is fine

We kept Ronaldo and won the league. What are Spurs planning? At the end of the day Modric has a chance to get a possible league title and champs league medal under his belt with Chelsea and Spurs are just spiting their face off. They'll do what they always do stick their heels in sale come dayline day then realise wowww we didn't really replace him ending up worse off then if they sold him earlier.

I guess it is over to Modric for the next move. How far will he go if he definitely wants out of Spurs and will Spurs ignore a written transfer request by Modric?

its no secret Modric want to leave to play in the champions league and win major titles...it seem he is being forced to stay against his own will.
Well, what did he expect when he signed his new contract extension. Shouldn't have signed it if he was going to want to run just because they failed to qualify for the CL this year. No sympathy for him at all.

He told Levy he understood though. He'd be a proper prick now if he lands a written transfer request on Levy's desk in the coming week(s).

We're planning to break back into the top 4, is that acceptable to you or do little old Tottenham have to cower every time one of the rich boys comes calling?

We're not spiting our face off. We're attempting to maximise our own potential for success. Our decision isn't based on some kind of sympathy for Modric's career, especially when it was him that signed the 6 year contract just last season.

Berbatov had 2 years on his contract. He had refused to play. He had gone on strike. Levy released a statement saying that he was disrupting the dressing room. Now here's the big difference that you're ignoring. Rather than saying we're not going to sell him full stop as we're doing with Modric, we set an asking price of 30 million. You messed us around, bidding silly amounts, clearly thinking we were going to cave. We didn't. Then Man City bid 30 million and just as with Rooney, you were forced into action.

Can you not see the differences in the two situations?

could someone please tell me what one of these actually is?

Does modric fire up word and type out....

Levy ya tight bastard, lemme go to chelsea or i'll shit in yer yarmulke! Cheers, Luka

I've always wondered that as well. I'm also curious about the transfer list, do the FA or premier league have an actual physical list hidden away in an office somewhere?

In the case of Ronaldo we made our big stand in 2008. We stood our ground and he stayed. BUT it's obvious we told him he could leave in 2009 if he gave us another season. That's why he was sold so smoothly then.

It could well be the same with Spurs and Modric. They make a big stand, and the player seems to concede, but really they've had to commit to let him go next year to keep him sweet.

There is a list that clubs use with available players and out of contract players

But its used for lower league sides etc...

I think that's probably the case. You stay one more season. If we get into the CL next season, we'll have this discussion again. If not, you can go for £x million. Preferably abroad.

Certainly a possibility. I think we'll find out from the response of the player in the coming days.

I'd say this is the most reasonable scenario right now.

So far we only have Levy's word that he understands. I don't think there has been any response from Modric yet?

If Modric is sweetness and light about Spurs again then I'd wager he's been given assurances he can leave next year. I don't see him and his agent doing such a sudden 180 otherwise.

According to Modric or reports about what Modric was supposed to have said, Spurs already made that deal with him last year.

“I have an arrangement with the chairman. When I signed my new contract, he said that, if another club came to sign me, they would consider the offer.

In which case he is a dummy if he thought signing a SIX year contract was a good idea.

Don't you get it yet? Not even now?

Modric's response either way won't make the blindest bit of difference to the outcome.

Oh dear Luka.....that means they will consider it, which they have, and then refuse. Did your parents never say that to you when you were younger.

All the more reason to suspect that if Modric seems to meekly accept he has to stay now then he actually has a firm commitment to go next year.

Spurs might be able to fob him off now by saying they have considered the offer and it's not anywhere near enough, but Modric will be in a good position to say that he will only accept their decision if they commit to letting him go for any reasonable offer next year.

I'd say there's still plenty more to come from this
I'm sure Chelsea will come back with a larger bid

I never said it would make a difference. Just that there's been no response from Modric about today's meeting.

We have no idea how determine Modric is to leave and how far he will take this. He may just rollover and take it as Spurs do seem determined not to sell. But if he feels he had a deal to leave if a team came in with a decent deal, Spurs will end up with a very unhappy player if they force him to stay. Will he play up to his ability if he is unhappy, who knows?

Unless Modric hands in a transfer request and tries to force the issue it's a no-go.

Who is that genius of an agent that got him to sign a six year contract worth 40.000 a year last summer is what I really want to know.
