UK Riots (with the exception of Manchester which has its own thread)

Is the army being called in a realistic possibility? When was the last time that happened?

It happened in Northern Ireland on a regular basis during the Troubles, but the tactic of deploying military force in this way is almost unanimously considered to have been inflammatory and a big mistake. There's no way the military will be deployed onto the streets of London. Not to come across as disparaging towards the military, but pretty much the only use for them would be to inflict violence or to threaten to inflict some kind of violence - they're not trained to deal with this kind of thing. The police are far better equipped to bring control in civilian matters. If it continues to escalate, the only sensible tactic I can see is to simply increase the police presence.

No it won't. Cameron campaigned on the back of this "Big Society" promise and what does he have to show for it now....student riots, multiple worker strikes and now the young from deprived London areas wrecking the capital. Add to that the unpopular spending cuts, job cuts, the polarising NHS reforms, the hiring of Andy Coulson (and whatever his relation in the whole NOTW scandal etc).

Yep, he's pretty much fecked.

We will see.

I believe that the conservatives can spin this.

I hope not, but I really think so, you are making a huge assumption that the electorate is logical. They are not they are reactionary and the political party which promises the hardest strike back will win votes. Look at people like Team Brain GB all he wants is a strike-back and he is representative of a large chunk of voters.

We should bring in Take That's dancers, they'll sort it.

Agreed.

Not really. This isn't the LA riots.

You've kind of answered my point really, its embarrassing because it should never even get to the point of a riot.

I'd imagine probably all of the people causing these riots have no clue what they're rioting for.

Why the hell shouldn't people want a strike back? The businesses aren't going to be the ones paying for this, we are. He who pays the piper calls the tune, decent law abiding tax payers are entitled to justice.

Trainers and TV's. Oh and the occasional meatball sub.

They know what they're after, crafty feckers.

Millions of Londoners will be concerned and scared at what the night will bring. It will be disastrous if the Government does not ramp up efforts significantly to thwart this.

If they don't then members of the public at large will become vigilantes, the prospect of which scares me.

Not very likely though is it, faced with shit loads of masked rioters, all over the place.

So Clegg's rejecting accusations the PM is showing a lack of leadership. Wonder what he'd say if he wasn't deputy PM.

Why aren't they even using tear gas and water cannons? We get that over here if three or four of us stop for a chat.

The lack of police response is making matters worse, which is what they wanted to avoid by joining in, in the first place. It's not as if they are going to stop on their own accord, or that it will be contained to a single area. The longer it goes on unopposed, surely the more people will get involved and the further it will spread as more and more of these wankers think it's fine to go around looting places and burning things down.

It's absolutely dead out there, the 'rioters' have all been called home for their tea but have been promised to be allowed out after they've cleaned their plates.

 It'd be your biggest ever wet dream.

UTDheap you prat. the greggs was the shop next door.

Oh no, guy on bbc thinks whenever the people involved in the riots are eventually caught, they will probably start more riots about that. Is this life from now on? Wake up, shit, riot, work, lunch, riot, work, home, relax, riot, sleep?

If someone was coming down your street with your family inside your house, what would you do?

The consequences of this dragging on for social cohesion are awful, I am petrified race will become a factor with the BNP and EDF getting involved.

I think you might be getting a bit melodramatic there, Hectic. Is it really all that bad. From what I'm seeing on the telly, the non-confrontational approach seems to be stopping it getting out of hand.

I don't know, thankfully it's not my decision to make.

I bet the international Olympic committee are fookin chuffed with their decision

In seriousness though it's a disgrace ! How the he'll does burning shops cars and homes help ?

The people doing this are morons and the authorities have lost control.
Time for the para's. The police can't handle this.

Stay inside? Not take on a mob?

But it has got out of hand in the sense it's spread to many areas, and in places it's far worse then what they are currently reporting on the news. Also the non-confrontational approach has given rise to the same behavior in other areas, which seems to be spreading more as time goes on.
