Luka Modric / Signs for Real Madrid

Jones turned down better wages to join us over Arsenal, Berbatov did what Modric is supposedly doing and Steve Bruce said at the time that while even Real Madrid had been interested in Valencia, he had his heart set on United.

Really? I find it hard to believe that Arsenal would offer bigger wages than United.

Arsenal have an habit of paying young players good wages, partially the reason why many players join them ofcourse Wenger's reputation also factors in.

I believe they overpay their young players and underpay their top players in order to attract the best young talent. That's why they have one of the highest wage bills in the country but aren't willing to give Nasri what nearly any other club would.

Modric throwing a fuss and want to go to chelsea, can levy stop him from leaving?

Arsenal's business plan revolves around bringing in talented young players at below market prices (transfer fee wise) but on relatively high wages.

Ramsay is on much more than he was offered at United.

It's why their wage bill is so much higher than their transfer spending would imply.

I doubt that's true if you factor in your £20M extra spend across the 40 players, even allowing for a few big hitters. Isn't Gibson on £40K/week (which is why you can't get rid of him).

That won't be Gibson's first senior contract though.

Our initial contract offers tend to be lower than what Arsenal would offer, with a view to an early re-negotiation if they do well (cf Hernandez/Smalling) Young players who impress the boss will quickly earn more than their Arsenal counterparts but are likely to be offered a lower wage when they first join.

I think it was Arseblogger who pointed out that the Arsenal approach didn't provide the right financial incentive for the likes of Denilson and Diaby to really kick on.

How will they line up?

Ramires - Essien - Modric

Lampard - Torres - Mata

feck me, they will have options with the bench too.

Haven't seen much of Mata so I can't comment but That line up doesn't really worry me too much. No width as usual, Lampard is old, Essien's injured all the time and place badly when he's back, Ramires isn't that great from what I've seen and Torres is a shadow of his former self. I like Modric though...:D

A fully fit and available Chelsea side would probably be:

Cech

Ivanovic Luiz Terry Cole

Ramires Modric Essien

Sturridge Torres Mata

It would be very controversial to drop Lampard but I can see him doing so. From what I understand, Romeu has been brought in an attempt to replace Makelele and there is confidence in him to do so, in which case a decision on Essien would have to be made.

Pretty scary midfield and attack in fairness. That midfield would be excellent against the likes of Barca and Arsenal.

By Makelele you mean Mikel, Brian?

Indeed it would, Essien being injured would make it easier for Villas-Boas but I think to chose a Ramires - Modric - Lampard midfield would be too lightweight and attack orientated for bigger teams, especially as Ramires is too offensive to play deep though he could share it with Essien.

Whilst he always gets lambasted, I feel sorry for Mikel. No player suffered more than he did when Mourinho left, Jose said Mikel would be a world great in two years which sounded ridiculous but after one year that looked as if it could very well happen. Since he left he has gone backwards and it could have been so different, though he has had ample opportunity to develop considering the amount of playing time he has had.

All these Chelski line-ups containing Modric are quite amusing.

Let's hope you are not too disappointed when reality hits in around 9 days time.

Is it that the same time when £40 million in cheques arrive for your fringe players?

I'm beginning to feel that this Modric sale is looking more likely now.

Levy says no way will he be sold and pretends to stand firm. :annoyed:

Secretly, Redknapp and Levy devise a plan to sell him for mega money.

As season starts Redknapp drops Modric from the squad saying he is unable to concentrate on playing for Spurs because "his head has been turned". :smirk:

Levy then says he'll have to sell Modric because he is sulking and won't play and therefore manager has no choice but to leave him out. Not good for Spurs, team morale etc.

Modric is naturally blamed for all this by Spurs fans and becomes a hate figure. Levy comes out squeaky clean again, says his hand was forced, he was left with no choice. He had to do the best for Spurs.

Modric is sold for over the odds. Spurs rubs their habnds together gleefully and crack open the champagne. They have the money they wanted. :D

(Sound familiar up to now?)

Redknapp buys the strikers he needs and a couple of other good players, all at bargain price.

Everyone at Spurs lives happily ever after. :p

I know everyone is doing the old Cleverley > Sneijder in the Sneijder thread, but I dont think they are similar or comparable as players.

Does anyone else think his game is similar to Modric's though? High energy, lots of short passes, short dribbles followed by an easy ball or through ball.

It's the same time that I collect £125 in bet winnings from various Caftards.

It's not too late for you join them.

This whole situations hillarious

Harry is DESPERATE to sell Modric but is trying everything to save face. He'll inevitably accept a bid on transfer deadline day and then proceed to flood the entire market with bids for players like a complete raving spastic.

This whole situation might just be the end of Jim White on ssn because I reckon he's going to die of excitement come 31st Aug when Harry goes spazzy (again)

Before we move onto bets how about you clarify how you say one thing then when you're questioned on it claim you actually said something different? You can't back out of everything with your silly bets.

Before we move onto bets? Does that mean you're in?

As for your other comment, what have I said that's especially changed? IF we sold all our fringe players, it would raise at least 30m and probably more ... that doesn't mean that all of them WILL necessarily be sold. And IF we sold a striker (beyond Keane) then that min. total would rise.

Quite why you find such a statement outrageous is frankly baffling.

You said I should hold off on sneering comments because you only said Spurs could raise £30-£40 million selling fringe player and it wasn't that ridiculous. In reality what you actually said was Spurs will raise £40 million+. You only need to go back a page to see the proof.

He is clearly an honourless liar who will make up anything if it suits him.

I assume that everyone is clear what the bet is? Exactly?

The reason I ask is that the modmins have no intention of sorting any resulting mess out.

Couldn't give a shit about Modric. If he played last night, if he stays, if he goes. I think he's not worth all the fuss. He also reminds me of a carrick type of player. So why on earth did we even think of him if we already had michael in our team.

I wonder in the 50's, 60's, 70's and 80's if you had players saying 'sorry, I can't play for the team at the moment, my minds not on it'?

I bet not all........mind they all probably had drink problems ;)

He is literally nothing like Carrick. He would instantly improve any team in the world (bar Barca and Spain of course).

Harry Redknapp ready to cup-tie Modric leaving Chelsea move in doubt | Mail Online

Is this even right? I thought playing him in the qualifier would only cup tie him for Europa and not the Champions League since Spurs aren't even playing in it.

He would be eligible to play for Chelsea in the knockout stages but not in the group stage.

18.18 For all matches from the start of the round of 16, a club may register a maximum of three new eligible players for the remaining matches in the current competition. Such registration must be completed by 1 February 2012 (24.00 CET) at the latest. This deadline cannot be extended. 18.19 One player from the above quota of three who has been fielded in a UEFA club competition match for another club in the current season may exceptionally be registered, provided that the player has not been fielded: − in the same competition for another club; or − for another club that is currently in the same competition. Furthermore, if the player’s new club is playing in the UEFA Europa League, his former club must not have played in the UEFA Europa League at any point in the current season.

No, that's not true.

18.07 As a rule, a player may not play in a UEFA club competition (i.e. UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League, but not UEFA Super Cup) for more than one club in the course of the same season. Exceptionally, however, a player who has been fielded in the first, second or third qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League or UEFA Europa League is entitled to play in the UEFA Champions League or UEFA Europa League for another club as from the group stage, provided that his former club did not qualify for the group stage of either the UEFA Champions League or the UEFA Europa League.

What you have to realise is that it's not the third qualifying round, it is the playoffs. If he's on the pitch for even a minute in a Champions League playoff game, that's it, he's cup-tied for the rest of the CL campaign (obviously, only if he leaves Arsenal afterwards).

From the Nasri thread, bolded the interesting parts.

From this intepretation, I'm seeing it as Modric can play for a CL team in the group stages even if Redknapp plays him tomorrow as there is no way that Spurs will qualify for the CL group stage.
