Welbeck

People all get so wonderfully OTT after games. He wasn't MOTM by any stretch. In fact Danny was having quite a poor game until he scored, without significantly threatening at all, and then had a very good following half hour which included a very nice back heel...How that can completely transform him into a legendary world beater or render the consistent performances of Rooney, Young and Jones (and, mosly Ando too) below him is a bit bizarre, but hey ho.

He was very impressive once he got his confidence, but as with some of the comments in the Sniejiddily thread, we should all perhaps just step back a bit and keep our expectations in check and our knees below deck...

Well done Danny, keep it up.

He'll be special. I've been saying it for the last two-three years.

It's just that little something, it's hard to point it out, but he's got that magic which separates him from your normal, talented, hard-working youngster(Cleverley for instance). That backheel is just one example of things he does which make you go "oh my, that was something."

Did you see the run he made towards the end, where he dinked it past his man first and ran 60 yards with it? That was another. His header was of course brilliantly taken, and another example I like to point out is the incredible way he dragged himself through on goal against Barca in pre-season when the ball from Nani was played in behind him. Saw that? I'm pretty sure you'd be hard pressed to find as quick feet and such a sharp mind to invent that, let alone pull it off.

Yeah but you hate Welbeck Mockney(Revil...it's just not the same), always have. Or you like Macheda more. Same thing really.

People are getting carried away but to be fair I prefer that to people wallowing in self-pity about how much trouble we'll be in if we don't bring in that one key signing. The one that we have to sign every season. And then don't. And then invariably win the league.

Perfectly understandable that people pick him among our 3 best players when he effectively won us the game by scoring the opener and creating the second.

There's more hyperbole in your reaction to the general reaction to his game than there are in people's actual reactions.

He had a below-par first half. He scored a goal in the second and had a terrific time afterwards, and showed what a lot of people are hoping for him to do on a more consistent basis. It was a good half hour too, so there should be room for some proper excitement.

Other than that, I agree that all the players you mentioned are better shouts for the MoM award.

Looking forward to coming on here after a dull 0-0 with an Arsenal side desperate to get a point off us and reading about how Welbeck "hasn't got the intelligence or movement to get past defences against the big teams".

He's young, he's going to be fairly anonymous sometimes, and he's going to feck up a lot. But he's clearly got some talent. If we all avoid getting on his back during the rough times over the next couple of years then he might turn out to be something quite special.

That backheel deserves endless hype, was just superb. Delighted for him and the team, will be a great addition to the squad.

As Top said, deciding the match for us by pulling off a great header followed by making up a goal which he had no right to do, could have something to do with people choosing him as MOM.

In general I agree though, but goals will always influence opinions. His coolness in the box was decisive.

Horrible before the goal, sensational after, the backheel was outrageous.

I hope he builds from this against Arsenal.

This pretty well sums up his evening, a perfect demonstration of what confidence will do to a young striker.

Indeed. His role in both those goals was different class as well. Brilliant header and beautifully weighted back heel.

He turned the game for us with those goals and kicked on from there to run Spurs ragged in the subsequent 15-20 minutes. An individual performance that influences a match to that extent definitely merits a nomination as MOTM.

It is understandable. Lot of things are understandable. Apart from Jason Sudeikis.

There's more hyperbole in your reaction to the general reaction to his game than there are in people's actual reactions.

Well, not really. I've said basically everything you say below, except I added the term "legendary world beater" in place of your "Brilliant, just absolutely Brilliant" and Number 7s "MOTM performance"...which, lets be honest, are also hyperbole.

He had a below-par first half. He scored a goal in the second and had a terrific time afterwards, and showed what a lot of people are hoping for him to do on a more consistent basis.

Well yes. This is basically exactly what I said, phrased slightly differently.

Other than that

Other than what? Your rephrased agreement with what I'd said

I agree that all the players you mentioned are better shouts for the MoM award.

Well then, erm, yes...I agree with your general agreement with generally everything I've said.

I don't like either. They're both OTT.

But I am terribly sorry all for being rational after a good performance. I should know better. Can someone tell marjen to put his penis away though, it's ever so slightly frightening me.

Wow Man Utd show us that they R the fav to the title. Great second half. I get a lesson from Welbeck. I need 2 train harder.

what a compliment :)

You don't think what he did in the second half was "brilliant, just absolutely brilliant"? Because that's what I was referencing, and I stand by that statement.

Ferguson also reserved special praise for youngster Welbeck after he scored and created a goal in the 3-0 win.

"In the first half he didn't play as a centre forward. He was playing too much in the midfield, he and Wayne," Ferguson explained.

"We stressed that we needed more presence up front. We needed someone to run through and it worked better that way.

"He's always had great ability. When we put him out on loan to Sunderland that's when he's become a man. He's got a great future."

I wasn't too happy with his overall play for the first 60 mins. But his improvement was very encouraging. Our football looks so fluent with his deceptive style of speed and movement in the final third. Like Gary Neville said, he just needs to keep working on his goal threat. Sometimes his unselfishness may result in wasted opportunities.

Perfectly understandable that people pick him among our 3 best players when he effectively won us the game by scoring the opener and creating the second.

After that opening goal he rediscovered his true ability and deserved to be recognised as our matchwinner.

I think the header was brilliant, the back heel was brilliant and the cycle kick was nearly brilliant...For the rest of that half an hour he was very good. Only Jones & Rooney came close to being brilliant performance wise for me.

Don't confuse not thinking he was brilliant with not being excited/impressed/very happy with his contribution though. The nature of discussions like this lead to it seeming as though I'm being negative...I'm simply not getting carried away or over egging it.

He just drank some of Michael Jordan's "Secret Stuff" from Space Jam at halftime.

It's fine, I'll happily admit to being a bit delirious after that, so a level-headed voice of reason does no harm :)

I just want to say to which ever poster it was, who said that only English people couldn't see that he was crap (over rated etc). feck off you tit whoever you were. He will or won't make it, but the whole he's English so must be shite agenda is so last year....

Well, I think you did. I wasn't making an entirely serious point though...

You can't see the irony in complaining about people being a bit hyperbolic/exaggerative/OTT? It thought that's your forte!

As people know I'm not keen on Welbeck, he started how he has played the season so far, which isn't praise in any way.

However, after he scored the header he was terrific, chasing back, winning tackle, taking men on, that backheel to Anderson, fantastic stuff.

What I love about Welbeck is how not only he pressures defenders on the ball, but he's actually really likely to win it or put enough pressure on to make them misplace a pass. He did just that a few times in the first half. Granted, things weren't falling for him offensively but he was playing a bit too deep and it was right of SAF to order him to spend more time in the box.

He's a peach of a player and I can't wait to see him evolve throughout the season.

Perfectly understandable that people pick him among our 3 best players when he effectively won us the game by scoring the opener and creating the second.

Exactly, he made the two key contributions that sealed the game, such is the way with forwards, that's why I put him in my MOTM 3.

Such an exciting young player, I hope he keeps getting picked as I am sure he will really grow into the side this season.

So true Brwned.

On the basis of 30 very good minutes?

Cheech before him every single time.

If he is to build on that 30 minutes dropping him will be counter productive. Let Chicharito have a few games as sub and play his way back after his concussion problem. Plus this quick interchanging of passes our front 4 are excelling at is more suited to Welbeck right now I'd say.

Agree.

However, if we need height in certain games, Welbeck is the man. He also offers speed unlike Berbatov. When needed, we can play 4-3-3 with Rooney and Chicharito playing off him.

Like being mentioned in here before, he needs to grab this opportunity, like Chicharito did last season.

he's had a pretty good run lately. hope he keeps it up. the second goal was one that won't be forgotten. rooney was celebrating before anderson even hit it. :D
