Welbeck

Glad for both him and Tom, as they were both looking a little ropey until then.

Confidence breeds confidence etc etc

After goal - 8

Confidence obviously is hugely important for him.

The thing with this guy is, he's got that extra bit of absolute class. As many of us has said since he started making his name in the reserves, I just can't see this guy be a huge star. And I'm talking a Top 5 player in the PL-kind of star. He just oozes class, and his awareness and touch when on song is absolutely exquisite. Top talent, even if the first half was a bit off.

Sometimes players need a catalyst to kickstart their season, this could be Welbeck's.

One of those youngster's who can be on another planet when he wants to be and pretty dire when things aren't quite going for him, one thing he never does though is throw a tantrum etc when this occurs, he keeps moving and trying to make an effort which is endearing.

Very good second half, I think he will produce alot of these sorts of displays, we just need to remain patient and he'll convert these patches of brilliance into solid 90 minute displays.

Welbs was awesome second half. AWESOME. Our forwards really need to start looking over their shoulder cos as long as he plays well the Boss wont drop him. He's shown that tonight.

Fixed.

He was understandably nervy at times in the past few games because he realises this is his breakthrough season but he's got so much quality. Funny to see all the 'Welbeck off Berbatov on' posts at half-time...they never learn.

Poor first half but after his goal looked very good. Not sure how he got motm on sky mind? Ahead of the likes of Jones and Anderson.

Hopefully that goal will give him the boost he needs.

Agreed, he's been very wasteful with possession. Something you could rarely accuse Berba of.

It's annoying how you always manage to make things about Berbatov. It's also very weird that you appear to be upset that Fergie has faith in a homegrown talent who happens to be a superb young player. I'm sorry, but Fergie was correct and Welbeck deserves to start ahead of Berbatov.

What a difference a goal makes. Crappy 60 minutes, excellent last 30.

It's obvious he's not completely a center forward in his head yet, which is not surprising considering the time he's spend as a winger or half striker-half winger at Sunderland (and for us a bit). He's still learning that position and he's probably been going walkabout a little too much for me during the game, especially when he's playing ahead of a roving Rooney which means we sometimes haven't got anyone upfront. But he's got such quick feet and a good knack of scoring goals. Not the complete package at all, but he's what, 20? He'll get there.

Need a gif of the second goal, his touches were quite close in time, before and after the back heel.
He needs to learn from Hernandez on how to run behind the defense. He did hot help the mid field at time with his awkward running in the first half. His runs made Cleverley look bad.

I know he's scored at the Stretford End a couple of times before, but this was a much bigger moment, it must have felt amazing. How old was when he joined us, seven or eight?

Actually, that's a funny point, he's almost certainly our third longest serving player after Giggs and Fletcher.

Probably the biggest improvement I've noticed since his stint at Sunderland is how strong he's become in the air. He's always been strong but never a real aerial threat. Nowadays he wins lots of flick ons and is a real danger in the box. Peach of a header tonight.

For me Pogue it's his awareness. It's such a threat to have a player like him in the final third. Every once in a while he will have spotted a run you pretty much didn't see from the TV even, and play a one-touch-ball to set someone free like today. Or take his first touch away from his marker into space, or like against Barca in pre-season, straight through on goal.

Great understanding with Cleverley as well which could be useful.

And yeah, he's become a great header of the ball. Awesome pace to boot as well. Sort out his movement and he'll give us 25 goals a season.

Welbeck and Cleverley were both completely transformed after the goal. Not much came off for either of them before that which goes on to show that they are very much prone to be overcome with nerves at this stage.

Not unexpected, of course. Hopefully they'll grow in confidence and stature, they have the ability.

If not for a terrible pass from Rooney (probably his only of the game) he would've been set through one-on-one with

His movement's excellent in general, I feel. If he was given a more disciplined role up top I'm sure he'd threaten in behind more but right now he's given freedom to drift and play his natural game and he actually played deeper than Rooney overall...but they both drifted plenty. You could argue that left us short of a target at times with both dropping deep - was great when Rooney made the clearance on the edge of the box and then Welbeck won the ball back seconds after halfway into his own half - but Nani and Young are both comfortable as attackers and in central positions so as the understanding between all four grows it could be very potent.

Properly kicks off his break-through season in the team by making the goal sheet tonight.

As per.

Brilliant. Just absolutely brilliant in the second half. Did you see the awareness and control he showed when he had his run on the left hand side from deep into our own half? Not many players in our team can pull that off.

His confidence will be sky high after tonight, and rightly so. It was absolutely fantastic seeing the smiles, not just on his face but on everyone else on the bench's (grammar nazi, is that correct?) on his behalf as he was coming off.

Any young striker would have confidence issues if they aren't putting the ball in the net. That goal and MOTM performance will do him the world of good and I fully expect to see confident Welbeck from here on in.

inconsistency will be welbeck's biggest problem this season, which is something kind of expected given his young age.

great to see how confident he was after he got the first goal.

I'll admit, I spent the first half wondering why we hadn't started Berba. Excellent second half from the lad, the assist was sublime.
