He deserves tremendous credit for his performance last night. But.... I'm not getting carried away. He'd drifted right out of the game just before scoring, and he didnt impress atall in the first half. Once he did score he was tremendous, so obviously confidence is king with him

Praise where due, lovely lad, and great that's he's a local, but I'm still not convinced. Plenty of work to do on his reading and link play. Positive signs tho

Fergie post match, spoke about this specifically. He said, Danny dropped way too deep trying to get involved, so that it looked like he was almost playing in midfield, but it was all a bit rushed and confused from him.

But at HT, Fergie made sure he got the message across...He was told to stay right up top, and run the channels...and well we saw him look a bit more involved, less isolated, and towards the end very very assured.

The other thing was, this was obviously not his OT debut, but we have to remember he is 20, and there will be nerves and the tendency to try to do too at times(he lost the ball a couple of times in the 1st half trying to make some intricate runs and dribbles).

As someone else said, He'll get a couple of more matches(his performance has just about earned him a start against Arsenal) and then we'll see Chicharito and Berba start more and be in the rotation while Danny takes a backseat.

How can anyone say they "can't fecking stand" a young lad who's come through the academy at the club they support? Weirdos.

Indeed. I really don't get it.

He has a bit of a cocky attutude when on the pitch but there's nothing wrong with that. It's not like he's cocky when being interviewed. He comes across a really humble lad.

Think it's a bit harsh people saying he played poorly in the first half. I think he didn't really get the opportunity to play well. He wasn't getting the ball to his feet very often at all through the first 45. I have only seen the match once, but that was the impression I got. Also, like Fergie addressed, he was coming way to deep to collect the ball.

Not sure why people are bemoaning his first half performance last night, mostly everyone was poor in the first half. I lost count of the number of times Rooney gave the ball away. Only Jones and Evans were arguably better than Welbeck IMO

Everyone was better than Welbeck in the first half, even Cleverley and Nani. No need for revisionism about this, it doesn't mean his second half performance was any less valuable.

Local lad Danny Welbeck admits he is living the dream at Manchester United.

Although Sir Alex Ferguson promised Welbeck he would get an opportunity at United this season after doing so well during last season's loan spell at Sunderland that he broke into the England squad, the striker cannot have expected it to come so soon.

The 20-year-old has followed up his start in the Community Shield by keeping his place for the opening two Premier League matches, against West Brom and Tottenham.

He even claimed the man-of-the-match prize last night, steering United towards their 3-0 win by scoring the first and creating the second for Anderson with an impudent back-heel.

For a youngster brought up in the heart of Manchester, the Longsight district now-departed Wes Brown also hails from, the experience is proving to be a rich one.

"There is no better feeling for a Manc kid than scoring for United," he said.

"I want more of it."

Partly through choice, partly through injuries to Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand that have presented openings, Ferguson ended up with the second-youngest team he has ever selected for a Premier League game on the pitch last night.

Yet the inexperience never showed.

Ashley Young's introduction from Aston Villa has been made far easier by the time spent with Ferdinand and Wayne Rooney on England duty.

For Welbeck, Tom Cleverley, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones it has merely been an extension of the England Under-21 squad, all of which they were part of during the summer.

The interesting thing now will be to see how many of that quartet are named in Fabio Capello's senior England squad for the Euro 2012 qualifiers against Bulgaria and Wales next month.

Mentally, there are no doubts over their capability to handle such responsibility, with Welbeck and Cleverley's personal friendship extending back to almost a decade.

"I have been playing with Tom since I was a young kid," said Welbeck.

"We have a good understanding and once Chris rolled the ball back to him, I knew what kind of area it was going in. Thankfully I got my head on the end of it.

"We have both been at the academy for over 10 years, so to come through and start in the Manchester United first team is a massive achievement.

"We are so grateful to all the coaches we have had throughout the youth system. We will never forget them."

Now though, they have moved on to a much higher level.

And in assessing a bench that contained Dimitar Berbatov, Ryan Giggs, Michael Carrick and Park Ji-sung at kick-off last night, they must realise how much faith Ferguson has in them.

"It gives us confidence when the manager picks us," said Welbeck.

"We have a great squad. There is youth and experience in abundance.

"Whoever is chosen will give it their best shot but Tom and I have shown we will work hard for the team whenever we are chosen."

I must admit i was hoping Fergie would change it up at around the 60 minute mark, which would probably include Danny coming off as he just seemed a little lost and off the pace in the first 45. Then i told my mates that if Welbeck scores just watch his whole performance turn around and oh my, he was a completely different player after the goal, thriving with confidence and taking on players. Made Dawson look ridiculous with that cheeky back heel. This guy could be a sensation this year for us.

Lot of people on here bang on about Fergie not making subs at half time. Well here was a clear example of the master at work. I bet majority of the people that commented on Welbeck in the first half would have subbed him straight away which would a) shatter his confidence and b) not give the chance to do what he did. Ridiculous that this gets brought time and time again.

Indeed. Actually, how a supporter of a club can say that about any of their own players, is beyond me.

More importantly, he's ours. I wouldn't hate John Terry if he was a United player.

“Regarding Welbeck, I’m highly impressed. Steve Bruce has done an excellent job with him at Sunderland. The boy seems to have picked up more speed and holds the ball up well.

“He’s a gem and it’s a massive bonus to the club and the fans that he’s born in Longsight. Everyone loves a local lad coming through. The Class of ‘92 were all local apart from David but he just loves United.
--Eric Harrison

The vote of confidence from Eric Harrison? Good sign.

I really rate Welbeck highly. Seems like a natural athlete and I like his languid style, which seems very Henry-esque. Obviously he's got a long way to go but his finishing seems top notch, very composed, excellent pace and control, good technical ability and a clever head on his shoulders too.

Said this about him in 2009, glad he's doing so well.

hes shit, he wont ever be united quality, you lot will use him as a scapegoat enough times this season so why your raving on about him, very very average, seemed pretty shit whenever ive seen him play

On the other end of the scale

Some people are just clueless. There are those that understand football, and those who should support City.

I remember debating with Alistair in the newbies and becoming furious when he said that Welbeck was the same level as Scott Sinclair and would never be anything more than a championship player!

I also remember getting a fair bit of stick and not much support initially when defending him in the Sunderland loan thread. He was always going to be special, and now it looks like that's about to happen.

I don't get what people find so cocky about him. It's so obvious that he's a confidence player, and when he does well and scores he's overly happy with himself (think people are referring to some of his goal celebrations), but it's not like he walks around the pitch all the time acting like he's the dogs bollocks.

a decentish young player who'll go on to have a career maybe in the lower leagues or with a lesser premier league side, don't think he's ever going to be a regular for a club of this size, he looks out of his depth in first team premier league football to me.

That was a pretty bad miscalculation wasn't it? Granted, he's only two games in, the future looks bright for the lad.

Even if he did, so what? Cantona walked around Old Trafford like he owned the place, Ronaldo walked around Old Trafford like we should be thanking God for the sight of him never harmed either of them as players.

I think it would help Welbs if he was more arrogant because, like you, I think he's at his best when the confidence is pumping in his veins. Anyone who has ever seen an interview with Welbeck knows he's nothing close to cocky and when he isn't feeling it he can be a little inhibited. With a touch more self-belief he could be immense because he's got all the gifts: big, strong, quick, skillful. He's got it in him to be the mobile powerhouse all the pundits keep hoping Carroll will be...

I don't mind a bit of cockiness, it just seems people are hating on him because of perceived cockiness which I can't comprehend, at least not based on evidence so far.

Heh, one poster I remember said that he was arrogant essentially because he answered a question in the post match interview

When has he been cocky? Haven't seen it myself, and certainly not in any interviews.

Neither have I.

I can remember one thread after the celebration he did against Derby in the FA Cup for being cocky(to young to celebrate like Henry) and Scholesy for his postmatch interview after Sunderland vs Chelsea:lol:

That was fecking hilarious. Wasn't Scholesy mad because Welbeck supposedly stole the mic when Gyan was being asked a question?

He was the future star Fergie talked about back in 2007.

People were seriously mad at his Usain Bolt celebration.

Being 'seriously mad' at a goal celebration is seriously weird.
