Anderson

Was very poor today. Felt a bit sorry for him. From very early on you could see he was going to have one of those days. When he picked out the same Chelsea player with the same pass, twice in quick succession you could tell he'd left his passing boots at home.

Consistency is going to be the challenge for him this season. We all know he can really play well, but the question about him filling the Scholesy gap was always about consistency..

I actually think that Chelsea did a fantastic job of scouting him and knowing where he likes to pass the ball. They did well at blocking his usual forward passing lanes and he didn't adapt anywhere near as well as you'd hope.

There was a pass in the first half out to the left that resembled something like a laser guided missile. Absolutely superb, but didn't do too much after that though. Good energy mind you.

It was a bit of a frantic game to be honest. Our players were misplacing passes as often as they were putting through some brilliant ones. Anderson himself hit some beauties but like Fletcher, often followed with a terrible one in his own half or one that was way too ambitious. But it was that kind of game. Everything was frantic.

Having said that, he could have had a bit more composure. But the biggest problem IMO was that he and Fletcher didn't actually look like a partnership. They were almost playing in isolation for me. They didn't feed off each other like a good central pair should. But we should give them time. It's always an adjustment.

Also, Anderson always looked good today when he kept it a little more simple. He's become a quality footballer but that doesn't mean there's nothing to learn. Hopefully he has a great season but also learns from the games where he doesn't play as well as he can.

Fletch only misplaced 5 passes all game, but I think I see what makes you think that he and Anderson didn't really create a partnership together.

Not to harp on it, and not to take away from Fletch and Carrick, but Anderson and Cleverley seem to have a great understanding, are always looking for each other and always making sure they're available in space.

No matter how good you are at long passes, controlled passing and moving is what football is about, imho. The ball can always move faster than the man.

It isn't all down to Cleverley of course, but with him on the field we've shown great tight control in midfield, playing some beautiful stuff, one touch, to get out of tight spaces, and allows the ball to get out to our wingers to try the more dangerous passes.

I said before the game he would not play well as I could see who was playing next to him. Every player Fletcher plays next to their form suddenly drops. Coincidence?

Anderson was in the form if his life and Carrick had also been playing well since the mystery virus. Fletcher comes back and both have struggled playing next to him.

You've said this a million times. People will either accept it or not, there's no need to keep repeating it.

I was reading your post and I decided to punch myself in the face, just for something more enjoyable to do. Coincidence?

I hope you're joking.

No it goes back over too long a time for me to be joking about it. When did Carricks form suddenly dip? About 2 seasons ago when Fletche became a main stay in the team, when did it recover? When Fletcher got his virus. When did Anderson start looking like the player we signed(first season) towards the back end of last season and early this season. Yes Fletcher tends to look ok in these games as he does simple stuff well but the poor bastard sat next to him(running round the pitch trying to compensate for his positioning) is constantly having to try 'hollywood' balls because there is nobody next to him for support or for a give and go.

FFS. My eyes.

Sir Alex is a right ignorant idiot eh, you'd think he'd have realised something so obvious by now!

Probably thinks that his breaking up of the play and general tenacious attitude is worth the sacrifice. Personally I don't.

I would be interested to know how many times Anderson & Fletcher exchanged passes. They do not seem to play as a cm pairing. Where as with anderson & cleverly or even carrick there are quite a few one two's.

Ando stated out well - the 1st ten minutes, but once he had that near suicidal backpass/cross field pass intercepted by Torres...he seemed to drop his level. He got sloppy, lost possession a few times.

Worst match he has had this season, but still not 'terrible', I also think he struggled a bit, because Fletch wanted to get upfield at every opportunity, leaving Ando caught in two minds, and a bit shorthanded in the middle at times.

No biggie - this was Chelsea, and we got the right result.

He wasn't great today but I don't think he did as badly as a lot of people made out. Seen people giving him 4 or 5 in the ratings thread which I think is a bit over the top.

Lets hope it's just an exception, still if this is one of his bad performances it's still a whole lot better than one of his bad performances from a season or so ago.

I thought he was good before that horrible pass that went straight to Torres, and after that it was like he forgot how to pass.

His passing was off but I was encouraged at how he tried to take control of things, always asking for the ball (people on here use to criticise him about not doing this).

Fletch has been the guy we bring in for the big games for a while now. We've generally done very well in those games. The 3-0 drubbing of Chelsea which went a long way to winning Giggsy the POTY in 2008-9 comes to mind.

Last year, when Scholes was injured and we went with Fletcher and Carrick for quite a few games our scoring went way down, but we also stopped conceding so many goals. It wasn't quite as pretty, and has probably gone some way to putting people off Carrick, and it would seem Fletcher as well.

But it's definitely not that cut and dry.

Actually thought he started in the scintillating form we've seen this season.

Part of the problem was that the team had obviously been told to play the ball over the top of Chelsea's ponderous defence for Rooney & Hernandez to run onto. Kept bypassing the midfield.

He was linking play with all the players on the team and I thought looked good.

The pass to Torres obviously not good. The bit where he kept passing to their players obviously not good but that apart he was driving into their defensive areas etc. Not quite sure why he was taken off. Slight injury?

If that is Anderson's bad day at the office, I'd take it over many others' slow, ponderous passing while they still give the ball away!

This was strictly a confidence issue today, which may be seen as more worrying than anything else. He started off well and wanted the ball constantly, but he made that horror pass that we nearly conceded off. He was very apologetic to everyone, but then he hit those two attempts to young that both rebounded off the defender and resulted in him looking stupid as he got overrun.

His body language suddenly changed and I saw him hiding behind his marker and not wanting the ball in situations that he was previously comfortable in. Fergie even personally called him to the touchline to have a word but he didn't recover. Fergie will be disappointed in him today as he has said so many times that it is the reaction of the player that he judges them off, not necessarily the mistake.

Agree with this. It was a completely different performance before/after he fecked up that pass, twice in quick succession.

He's a confidence player. a good start to the game and he dominates it till the end. a couple of mistakes and he tends to go in his shell. thats what happened yesterday. nothing to worry about as its just 1 bad game but someone needs to sit with him and explain that mistakes happen. he should learn to forget them and play.

Ando's passing stats this season

v West Brom - 97%
v Tottenham - 87%
v Arsenal - 87%
v Bolton - 84%
v Chelsea - 78%

That's an average of 87% this season, impressive stuff

(smile) Noone can keep up a 97% pass rate for a whole season. 83% is still excellent.

You could say that with Cleverley his rate has been high.

You could make a case for pretty much anything.

Fact is - I don't think he had a bad game. Not as brilliant as the previous games, granted - but still highly effective (even with the 3 mistakes he made)

hes had a great start, I hope he can keep it up. You could see that chelsea really tried to press our midfield quickly and Anderson seemed a touch off.

The Chelsea game was a weird one. I thought he rebounded reasonably well from his awful start, and its encouraging to me that none of the other 4 central midfielders on the bar maybe Ramires to an extent really got to grips with the game either. It was just a strange game of football, completely end to end with no real rhythm.

Yep a weird one alright. Still, it was a refreshing change from the tight tactical games we are used to.

Just 2 good teams trying desperately to win a game of football.
