Manchester United vs. FC Basel

Well, we'll just have to agree to disagree...I don't think we need a player who gets stuck in..and all that, rather a player who can keep the ball...and knit things together in midfield. We looked like headless chickens in the middle against Chelsea and all.

United beat Chelsea. You really want to play like Arsenal every week?

He didn't do it tonight. If Keane were in that 16 shirt he'd tell Jones to get the **** back into defence when the fullbacks are pushing up, he'd close down players. Carrick doesn't assert his authority in the game when the other team is on top.

You're trying to compare Carrick to one of the best midfield players that has ever lived. Sorry, you need to get over it, there is no player currently in world football that is anywhere near what Keane was.

I thought more would be made of the ref laughing when he gave them a penalty. What was going on there?

Only started watching when you were 2-1 up. Cracking game from then on, with Jones looking particularly shaky(attacking he's great, always has been fine there, but defensively he's a bit dodgy). I was fully expecting a 4-3 United win, and the Basel manager did his best by sticking 11 men in his own penalty box for 10 minutes.

I couldn't believe it when he gave them a penalty, I wasn't 100% convinced. Also if he gives that, why didn't he give a penalty to us for a similar challenge on one of ours in their area later in the game?

United could've lost that game...we were very lucky to win. We could've easily have lost today and all. Sometimes results don't give the full picture. And I want us to look more in control.

Yeah it's mad, maybe, just maybe, Jones could be a similar player, but it'll take years of development.

To be fair, with Anderson and Cleverley linking up with Rooney, Young and Nani, we were in more control than I've ever seen a United side. Sure, those few games aren't completely representative of how that lot will always play together. But there was an unreal level of fluidity and control in there.

I don't think that the Valencia penalty was one, at best it was obstruction which would be an indirect free kick, but I didn't see much from Basel to warrant a penalty either.

we will top the group no doubt - but we need the champions league era under the defensive queiroz - sorry but its true - it is nice to be entertained but hey three goals conceded is a fecking hockey defence

You're optimistic to the extreme.

You're right, it is optimistic, but Jones is incredibly talented and Pogba is built like a brick shithouse. But I was specifically meaning the destroyer role, not a Keane or Robson role, which is well, virtually unique to a select group of immensely talented footballers.

Well, if that is what SAF wants of him, he'd better start now. How old was Keane when we signed him, 23?

I think we'll see it when Vidic and Rio are back, with Smalling and Evans fit and ready for back up.

I think he's saying we need to be defensive minded in Europe to succeed, as we were when Queiroz was assistance coach.

What happened last year then? We've played the same way in Europe for the last 4 or 5 seasons. Even this season, if we're saying it's changed, then we're basing it off one game.

Post Match Interview

"I think we were careless. It's a wake-up call in many ways. A lack of concentration saw us give the game away really...but we rescued it.

"To concede three goals at home...the defence and midfield have to be better than that in terms of concentration.

"If you lapse, the quality of the Champions League can make you suffer."

Ferguson was unimpressed by referee Paolo Tagliavento's decision to award Basel the 75th-minute spot-kick which gave them the lead.

The referee decided Antonio Valencia fouled Marco Streller - and Alexander Frei netted.

The Scot continued: "I don't think it was a penalty. You can see quite clearly that Valencia won the ball. It's a poor decision.

"The referee kept getting in the way of the game. I think he wanted to play. But what can you do?"

On two-goal Welbeck, Ferguson added: "He tired a bit in the second half but it was difficult to take him off...if we'd been in a better position we'd have probably taken him off."

Fabio joined United's injury list - however, the Scot is hopeful of having more options for the weekend's match against Norwich in the Barclays Premier League.

He added: "I don't think (Chris) Smalling will be back but hopeful of one or two others will be coming back."

Asked by Sky Sports if Wayne Rooney and Javier Hernandez were two of them, the Scot said: "Hopefully."

so true.

still the players that did play should not have allowed them to rattle us.

think we were mentally not prepared for what we saw today.

..we underestimated them.

I blame *gulp* SAF :nervous:

Rooney and Chicharito will play on Saturday, or at most Rooney will be on the bench. But Chicharito will definitely play though.

The ref did seem to get an awful lot in the way during the 2nd half, that does my head in. Ref the game, but don't get that fecking close in the middle of play.

Basel getting all 3 points wouldve put us in a terrible position. So the result in the end is a lot better than what it couldve been.

Not really bothered about the performance. Lack of motivation/complacency whatever it was, it is unlikely to directly affect us in the league.

Where does it leave us in the group and our chances of finishing top?

Knee-jerk or what? They were poor at their jobs tonight, that is all. No need for a change of tactics at home

Yes it certainly keeps Basel closer to us, so it's not the end of the world. Our next two matches are away and home against Gulati. On paper, they are the easiest fixtures. If we win those two, and hopefully the other two teams can draw with each other, that should see us top. I still think we'll go through but whether we finish top or not is a different matter.

Win our next two games and we'll be on 8 points and one of Benfica/Basel would need to win both to prevent us from going top.

Or if one of those teams wins one and draws one they'd be level on 8 points with us (if we win both ours)

no.no knee jerk - i prefer the patient approach, i thought the same against benfica - seduction, gentle caresses of the ball suck them in - lull them, hit them on the counter - easy - then sit back and lick them

in the eighties we played gung ho and won feck all in europe. finally saw united beat barca in the "the cup winners cup" (do some googling).

also early nineties with the restrictions placed upon us in terms of home grown players we were thrashed by barca.

seen us throw away semi finals for the champions league - dortmund, monaco etc with an open english style football

why have we only got three? see above

Because we don't seduce and lick?

anyone felt we should have a penalty when berbatov was pushed from behind in the box?

Are you high? What has all this got to do with queroz? We've continued to break records without him with our cl results. I was waiting for you to realize this.

Maybe I'm sleepy but I'm still confused about seduction and licking.
