Berbatov | Fulham player

no chance fergie already stated he won't buy anyone of note in janaury because none are good enough, so I really don't see the logic of letting berba go at this moment of time.

That means nothing. If he said yes we are after someone it would cause a media frenzy.

I'll miss Berbatov as a Premier League player as much as one of ours. A delight to watch when he's on his game.

It's right for him to go, though. The current holder of the Golden Boot shouldn't be that far down the pecking order at any club.

It may seem simple to just tell Leverkusen we have an option to extend by a year so we see it as if Berbatov has 18 months remaining on his contract, but it's meaningless unless we exercise it. Because if we're willing to negotiate with Leverkusen, it's obvious to them we don't want to extend that deal, maybe because we don't want to committ to paying his (high) wages for another year.

Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed Manchester United will be exercising the option to extend Dimitar Berbatov's contract by a further season.

Berbatov's current deal expires at the end of the campaign, but the Premier League champions have a 12-month option in their favour.

The Bulgarian striker had been linked with a January move away from Old Trafford after struggling to command a place in the United starting line-up this season.

Fulham were mooted as admirers of the 30-year-old, while his representatives claimed there had been contact regarding a potential return to Bayer Leverkusen.

However, Ferguson has decided to keep the former Tottenham Hotspur forward as part of his plans and will take up the option to extend Berbatov's deal.

"We'll be exercising (the option to renew]," said the United boss. "I think it kicks in in March."

Berbatov was the joint leading scorer in the Premier League last season, but has started only twice in the competition this term.

He came off the bench to score his first league goal of the campaign in last week's 5-0 win at Fulham before plundering a hat-trick when starting the Boxing Day mauling of 10-man Wigan Athletic.

This isn't complicated.

It is a bit complicated, why can't we just agree to give him an extension now? Initially making it happen in March overcomplicates the issue. Surely we still run the risk that Leverkusen or whoever can agree a pre-contract with him and are free to talk to him at the moment.

I have heard some sources say that we have already extended his deal the extra year.

I would imagine that it is in the contract. We have an option to extend on a certain date.

You can't tell Leverkusen we want more money because he has a clause and we intend to use it.

Of course we can.

He's under contract with us thus we can say what we want.

Remember, we're Man United and we do what we want.

:D

Yes, it is. We're talking money, big money, especially for a club like Leverkusen. Saying 'yeah, we'll take the option' and taking it are two different things in the world of business and negotiations. Fergie saying something in a press conference will absolutely not stick here.

Right. It's all a cunning ruse from Fergie for........some reason.

Technically it is half a year, until it isn't. You can't tell Leverkusen we want more money because he has a clause and we intend to use it.

There is big difference with a player that has 5 months left on his contract compared to a player that has 17 months. United having that option obviously increases Berba's value which otherwise would be near zero this January.

I'm really not bothered at all what happens with this transfer situation. Happy enough to keep him and happy enough to see him leave and star in a team for the remaining years he has left at top flight football.

I do think is a luxury player for us. Good to bring him in for a home game against lower table opposition, in order to give Rooney a rest.

I don't think we'd miss him too much for the remainder of the season if he was to go, especially as we are out of the CL and we can afford to play a few of the youngsters in the EL when Rooney and Welbeck need a rest.

Either way I'd say £5-10m would be the price. He is going to want big wages considering it'll be his last big contract and if he is after the wages he is currently on for say a 3 year contract, you'd be looking at £20-25m for 3 years.

You cannot genuinely believe that Berba is on 130k a week? If this is the case then I think he would have been sold in the summer.

I'd be surprised if he wasn't. Our most expensive signing ever, hes going to be one of our top paid players. Probably only Rooney and Rio ahead of him.

I've just spent 5 mins of my life watching that gif from start to finish on my iPhone that I will never get back :wenger:

'Sky sports understands' is just another way to say we're guessing really isn't it?

I'd be very sad to see him go if it is true though, not going to get another 3rd/4th choice striker of his quality :(

Since we haven't actually sold him and haven't actually received any fee, we can't really discuss what his worth is this month. I just don't think us having that option to extend would have any meaning in negotiations - unless we actually use it.

Nothing to do with any cunning ruse. But Fergie saying we'll extend his contract has no meaning when two clubs meet to discuss a fee for a player.

Yes, it does. It means that he has 17 months left on his contract as opposed to 5. I am amazed that you aren't getting this.

I'm amazed that you aren't getting the fact that an option to extend and saying you'll do it is not like actually extending it. Until we legally exercise it, it's just an option. Just like saying we'll use the option we had to sign Tevez a few years back didn't make him our player.

Until we legally inform him otherise, Berbatov has five months remaining on his contract.

Wouldn't be surprised if there was something in this. Not the first time SAF as said one thing and the opposite as happened.

Except it isn't. Because Fergie has stated that we will be exercising it.

See above.

I wasn't aware that we are negotiating with anyone, only that Berbatov has been spotted on a plane wearing a scarf.

If it is true and he leaves now or in the summer will you apologise to those you called "thickies" for thinking he may be on his way?

Except it isn't. Because Fergie has stated that we will be exercising it.

Legally, Fergie saying we'll exercise is it meaningless. Just like, as I said, Fergie saying we'll use the option to keep Tevez is meaningless.

A little letter to Berba's lawyer, however, WOULD make him our player for another 12 months. Until then, he has 5 months remaining and his status is that of a player who is close to the end of the contract. Including being able to negotiate with clubs and sign a pre contract (which would then be meaningless if we do take up our option).

We ARE taking up the option. It may have already happened, SAF even mentioned when it kicks in (March).

The Tevez thing isn't remotely comparable.

Listen.
Berba will be in no hurry to leave.
He doesnt mind being a squad player. He has said that.
Financially, he wont get a 3-4 year contract @ 90k or whatever he is at anywhere at his age. If he leaves on a Bosman, he gets a bigger signing on fee. If not,he stays at united for longer and gets more wages. It doesnt make sense looking for a move for money.

We need him in the squad, he is happy enough with his role. Has said that numerous times in interviews. He wont be leaving...

You cannot genuinely believe that Berba is on 130k a week? If this is the case then I think he would have been sold in the summer.

If you include the purhase price i worked on £100k a week (£5m per year + £5-10m fee). To be honest though £130k wouldn't surprise me with bonuses.

If it happened behind the scenes, it happened. Whatever Fergie said was meaningless.

If it did not, then it hasn't. And whatever Fergie said is still meaningless.

Of course it would have meaning, if Munich or Leverkusen want Berba and SAF is fine with keeping him then it obviously strenghtens our hand. Without that option Leverkusen or Bayern could either sign him on a pre-contract now for FREE or for a nominal fee, the option stops that.

What are you talking about?

I agree with Amir, us saying we will extend the option and us actually legally doing it is two different things. Who knows maybe we have, maybe havn't but there's no information to tell us if we HAVE (not intend to) taken the option. That's the crux of the matter. However, I'd wager Gill is not stupid and would have seen to the legalities.

There is absolutely no sense in not taking up the option. None. It will happen.

If we want to keep him, taking up the option keeps him here for an extra 12 months.

If we want to sell him, taking up the option increases the transfer fee we can demand.

It's quite simple, really.

I disagree that we need to use the option to get a higher fee, I think this January just having the option will enable us to get a decent fee, something we wouldn't get without that option being there.
