It is a genuine question though, how can he be anyone's favorite (or top 2-3) whereas the real season hasn't even kicked off yet ?

For me its the way he plays football. He's got quality on the ball but he also work incredibly hard without it, in both defence and attack. He also says the right things for fans, the fact he wanted to come here is great too.

He looks a nice guy.

Whats not to like?!

He is a star, even before he came to us. Not many of our recent signings can claim that.

How does that translate into becoming a fans favourite though?

Would that mean Van Persie would be a favourite if he came, despite not doing anything for us?

Maybe some people actually knew he existed before this summer.

So let me get this straight, he was their favourite player last season?

No, of course he wasn't. In fact, I reckon he barely registered on anyones scale of favourite players. But, now that he's a United player, he suddenly is the favourite and has been?

It doesn't make any sense. People calling him their favourite player are being stupid as he hasn't played a real match for us yet.

Surely having a "favourite" player is inherently irrational and shouldn't have to undergo any kind of scrutiny?

A discussion about "best" player would be completely different but it's easy to see why some people might have warmed to Kagawa with indecent haste.

You don't find it strange that someone can say, 'Kagawa is my favourite United player', despite not watching him play a game for United?

To be fair hes played in 3 now? Ok there not league games but hell why does that matter.

I don't consider three pre-season matches as proper matches.

Maybe I'm alone, but it's damn strange for me.

I get you what you're saying but it still doesn't make sense (to me and Hectic at least) how he can be a United favorite already ? His style of play and his mentality aren't put into question, just how can he be one's favorite player at United already ?

Maybe some people actually knew he existed before this summer.

So what  ? I include myself in the "some" but talk about completely missing the point ..

Just like if Messi were to come tomorrow, I wouldn't say he's my favourite United player, because he is yet to do anything for United, obviously his quality isn't in question here.

I'd reckon this is strange for many of you. Can you imagine someone saying Nani or Rooney was their favourite United player before they'd kicked off their first season?

Being one of our players is obviously going to make people more partial to him, and all of our players for that matter. He's a very likable player in the first place so of course its possible people already liked him but the fact we signed him tipped the scale.

Well, Hectic he's a two times title winning player from another top European league. It kind of automatically fires up the supporters. (Heinze was the "fan's player of the year" the year he joined us.)

Also, favourite in a sense of 'Favourite to shine'? MY favourite has been always Scholes, and it won't change.

You're misunderstanding me. I'm not asking why people are very excited over him, it would be hard to find a United supporter who isn't.

Yes, Heinze was fans player of the year, after having played a years worth of football. Which is my point. You wouldn't of had posters saying in the season we brought Heinze, before he played any games, 'He's my favourite United player'.

Heinze was a fighter and a good performer in a season where United was poor by its standards. His "love" and him being a fan favorite didn't even kick off before the season started

If anything he's still my favourite player, he's never done anything wrong, at all, ever.

He has played 3 games though wether you count them or not, i think that is enough to establish if they like that type of player. His personality also helps, seems very scholes-like which i think we all appreciate.

I think the other reason is we really dont have another player like him in our squad - hes the closest to iniesta that we have got, as soon as he gets the ball i feel like something will always happen.

I understand that. But I was just pointing out that a new player could actually be a fan's favourite. But I think the reputation, and the style of Kagawa's game has already won over some of us fans.

I have to disagree. I'm not talking about whether you like a player or not. I'm talking about people saying 'Kagawa is my favourite United player', after three pre-season games. It's that simple.

Yeah that I can certainly understand, but for me he has to actually do something for United, to become a favourite. I've warmed upto him a lot, he looks a ridiculous talent and I enjoyed watching him before he signed here, but a favourite? Not even close.

Perhaps some others really dislike most of our squad

I agree that to say already he is the favourite above giggs / scholes is a bit silly, but he is also "1" of my favourite players already, as i watched him alot for dortmund.

I wouldn't read too much into it. Rooney has scored 180 goals here and some people hate him, the fat shit.

That's fair, and I can understand that a bit better if people had seem him for Dortmund, as it adds to the excitement and opinion they might have already built up - but that's exactly it - I couldn't understand mentions over players like Giggs and Scholes really (not that these should be everyones favourite players).

It's not something I care strongly about, or a stick to beat posters with, it's just sheer surprise at his mention for that sort of thing. That and confusion I suppose.

So with us signing RVP and having 3 other frontline forwards does this mean SAF sees Kagawa as more of a deeper midfielder than playing as a no.10?

I'd imagine Kagawa will still play behind the striker in Europe where we'll push Rooney wide.

I think it's a shame we probably won't see him in that role regularly though, been a while since I've been as excited about a player as Kagawa after his performances behind the striker in pre-season.

I hope we go 4-2-3-1 with a fluid front 4 of Nani, Kagawa, RVP and Rooney all interchanging positions.

I'm thinking myself now that Kagawa will hold more of a central role now. Obviously he'll play out on the wing sometimes and behind the striker too, and he will be the more advanced CM assuming he's mainly beside Carrick, but I don't see where else we will play him.

We've not exactly had a settled first team for awhile now, with *deep breath* Valencia, Nani, Young, Kagawa, Van Persie, Rooney, Welbeck, Hernandez, Giggs and, of course Bebe available to us, I reckon we won't have anything close to one.

Yep. I was hoping for a shift to a 4-2-3-1 with Kagawa as the no.10. It's clearly his best position.

I was mostly joking when I was saying it on the last page, but like Pogue had said a favorite player doesn't need to be rational. I do like him a lot already, but a lot of that probably has to do with the excitement of him signing for us and the potential he has. I watched a decent amount of him these last two years because I was also looking out for Sahin and then Goetze so I had a pretty good idea of what kind of player he is and his personality on the field, which is very likeable.

But yeah, him genuinely being my favorite United player currently would be weird.

"I think that, absolutely. That had to be in our estimation of bringing Robin here that we had to… what would be the combinations because Robin can actually play in two or three positions as he's done at Arsenal, last season he proved what his best position was, number 1, furthest up the pitch, 37 goals, 30 league goals, that in itself tells you where his best position is. But Arsenal over the years have sort of evolved their systems a bit and therefore that's maybe why he was sometimes played midfield, wide right, sometimes wide left, and in that situation now I have the possibility I can play Rooney through, Van Persie through, Chicharito through, I've got Danny Welbeck who could play through and I've got Kagawa playing in that hole behind, who is a fantastic young footballer too. So that's my dilemma but you know that the most important thing for all these 5 players, and you've got Macheda, young Macheda, who is still a young lad, only 20 years of age, the important thing is to win what we want to win, that's the important thing and the players, as a unit, the 5 of them, have helped us to do that by offering a goal contribution that is better than everyone else, then we've done the right thing.

So there's me thinking that Kagawa was now nailed on to be a centre midfielder now RVP is here. Really does cause a head-scratch. Could we potentially see Kagawa playing behind two players?

Eh. He's talking about striking options and then says Kagawa can play in the hole behind a striker. That says nothing about Kagawa playing central mid or playing behind two strikers.

Having said that Kagawa is pretty much guaranteed to play in at least 3 positions at some point this season

Without wishing to offending anyone, Kagawa is in effect replacing Park (and Giggs pretty much). He is able to play off the main striker and also flexible enough to play in central midfield and out wide, all positions Fergie had hoped Park would end up suceeding in doing last season.

Replacing and completely upgrading.
