I've hated the stuttered penalty since Ronaldo's vs. Cech in Moscow, you just know they're gonna be saved.

Penalty should also probably have been retaken. There was a Gala player in the box I think.

The penalty wasn't only shit, it was bizarre, he normally takes a very good penalty. Every one I can remember him taking went in the top corner with bags of confidence, this time with that stupid stuttered run up he looked like he'd got in his own head and never thought himself that he was going to score.

I thought that too but he's missed his last few. Fulham a couple of seasons back, and in the Barcelona friendly this pre-season.

As much as it was a terrible penalty which bizarrely tried to copy Ronaldo, he's actually starting to become underrated by some. The number of people who seem to think he's terrible and should be solid is alarming. Had a friend telling me he's the worst player ever for the club.

I didn't see any pre-season. Maybe I just remember the good ones because they were so good, but his top corner penalties definitely stick in the mind.

Funny how opinions differ, I thought he was pretty disappointing tonight. Made some fantastic passes (a chipped pass to Hernandez was incredible) but I felt the good was bogged down too often by him choosing a stupid option. The penalty miss obviously being a huge black mark, given the context within the game.

Valencia was slightly more frustrating as despite looking more assured on the ball & getting himself into some great positions, his final ball was awful throughout.

Agree with this.

Shambles, absolute shambles. He wasn't his usual erratic self, that was diabolical - bar a couple of good passes.

And to think that a good number of people wanted him to replace Valencia on the right. Has to sort this out, he can be truly wonderful on his day.

Go back to sleep

Thought he looked a bit lost until he missed the pen. Really upped things thereafter. Couple of exquisate through balls. First time he's looked focused this season. Just the beginning, I hope.

Wow think that's an incredibly harsh assessment, better finishing and he could have had 5 assists or something.

He was inconsistent as hell, and I'm being kind.

Indeed. Erratic is the perfect description. He kept making a mess of things, but should have had five assists. That'll do!

But what the feck happened when he grabbed the ball? That was a surreal moment.

Nani is a confidence player. To have him take the penalty when he's low on confidence is a poor idea. (The same as KD giving Suarez the penalty in an insignificant cup game against a lower league team last season. No, that was worse/more hilarious.)

Only saw it from the stand so won't have the full picture but thought he did alright. Yeah, he gave it away a few times and made the wrong decision a few times but he's not played an awful lot yet but he had some great link up play with Evra and those around him and set up some good chances. Fergie will probably drop him for 2/3 games cos of the penalty though.

What were folk saying at the game about him?

I'm tired of excusing players for occasional flashes of good play and I mentioned he had some.. I know what I see. I can't stand the feeling of forthcoming frustration when he gets the ball and isn't on his A game.

Gala were diabolical defensively from the left and in the channels, he had to make something out of it. For me, a world-class winger has to play at least well for 90 minutes + do something extra.

Put it this way, if he could somehow swap brains with Valencia or any half-inteliigent winger, he would be the best at his position, by some margin as well.

You're being an utter twat! Inconsistent in what way? He opened up the play on numerous occasions. He played better today and created more chances than Di Maria, who was praised yesterday, did for RM yesterday!

I wonder what you expect from certain players or if you are just one of those haters, because it's not about criticising, it's about bashing.

He was, after Kagawa, our best attacking player. Some wonderful passes, great link up play, good work defensively, always run after the ball if he's lost it. If not for the penalty miss, his rating would be pretty good. but you actually have to watch games without an agenda if you wanna rate the players fairly

Nani created goalscoring chances, it was Valencia who was frustrating tonight.. regularly beat his markers with some breathtaking play (especially in the first half), then regularly put in nothing crosses.

Valencia was frustrating, because he did almost nothing of note. Yet Nani gets the flack, which is retarded.

Total extremes again on here. Some saying he was amazing, others saying he was terrible. The truth lies somewhere in between. However if you asked Nani himself how he thought he played i'd say he'd be quite disappointed. He can definately play much better than that, but even though he wasn't great he has still made telling contributions.

He'd be disappointed at his penalty rather than his general play, had he scored that - there would be no disappointment.

I'm sorry nearly drawing/losing to an inferior team at home doesn't warrant any criticism of the players. I'll tell you what, gold stars for everyone!

On a serious note, he created some good chances a nice ball to Chico, some nice interplay with Kagawa. But his passing and crossing at times was shocking.

Nani will always divide because he often does lots of simple things wrong and hinders our momentum. He did create tonight, but at the same time he did lots of simple things wrong.

One bellend behind me was "gutted" that he rejected Zenit in the summer  there wasn't much said near me, though he usually gets more groans than others like Carrick used to. Praise for when he did alright but some people just don't understand flair players.

That person is an idiot, but people are entitled to be critical. Only 2-3 players were better than average tonight.

The thing is, I don't mind criticism. At least be consistent though. Where is the criticism for Valencia, RVP, Kagawa, Scholes? Where are the threads? Why is our second best player on the night receiving such flack?

World class or not wingers are very rarely always good over a whole game that's the nature of their game. Ronaldo and giggs had plenty of poor games saved by moment of class or just had decent games attuned. They weren't always destroying teams and both were world class.

Nani made some mistakes today but he also laid on about 5 chances which at this level should have been scored, at least some of them. It's not his fault they didn't score.

This whole football intelligence thig is stupid. Nani is smart he showed that in his passing an link up today, but he's also selfish in te same way any top flair player is. People are mistaking selfishness for stupidness. That's not saying selfishness is fine at times it's gestating as hell but at the same time if you want him to produce magic you have to accept that sometimes it won't come off.

Te standard that's expected of him is crazy at times. People want Valencia/Beckham like constant supply but the magic of giggs/ronaldo it seems.

Yeah, having an agenda towards United players has always been my problem. His penalty has feck all to do with my perception of his play today, although he did end up a bit of a twat if those rumours about RvP being our main pk taker are true.

Why do people think that criticism is identical with hatred?

That's condescending nonsense. Football is a super sport because there are so many ways to play it, and different people like different aspects and styles. Some people may not understand the game, but not because they don't fancy certain players. It's possible to understand and still not like.

Valencia - Worst game in a United shirt since champions league final
RVP - Anonymous
Kagawa - Errrr... he was good?
Scholes - Some off balls, but some great ones too. Legless though.

Nani was just frustrating tonight. Despite the little moments.

Giggs can be wasteful at times, like pull off one good pass out of 20 all day. Yet it gets excused because "he meant well". Or some other stupid shit.

After Wigan last season I don't think that argument can be used again
