Fantasy Tournament: World Cup All-Time All-Stars

Had 2 cracking world cups, can play both sides and is a non winner. I'm sure the rest were all after him

Yeah, he's obviously appearing on the right for me and he was named best right back of the 86' tournament I believe.

WTF are you doing? Seriously, you've turned into Isotope.

Cracking player, better than his World Cup form, but not one I thought you needed at all.

I'm starting to worry that my theory that no one will pick certain players because they really really don't need them anymore will fail, massively.

Nahh he fits perfectly and most definitely wasn't purely an attacking midfielder, he could play much deeper and control play from further back. He was good defensively but you're making him out to be another Socrates or Zico!

Sure he was better defensively, I had him down to partner Neeskens if I missed out on Bozsik (although I was thinking a three could be needed there).

Still, if you are playing him at the base of a 4-2-2-2 there are better suited and more dynamic and defensively sound players around. You also already had Beckenbauer coming forth to help dictate from deep. You are basically taking Brazil 82 (a side that paid the price for being too gung-ho) and making them riskier. All very well and good when you have the ball, but when you don't...

Yeah this is exactly true, you're spot on. I misinterpreted your post on Van Hanegem.

But yeah, that is all a conscious decision. The original idea was a much more solid 5-3-2 but I just decided to make an incredibly attacking team instead when Socrates was still available. It's more attacking than Brazil 1982 but also has Beckenbauer and Kohler in central defence. I don't have a problem with it at all, I think it will be brilliant.

Aldo and Fergus look incredible really. Brilliant job so far.

Van Hanegem playing deeper and looking goddam glorious, whilst showing his phyco side

Pol has my favourite team, its brilliant. Can't wait to see how he pulls it all together.

Fergus and Aldo obviously very strong as well.

Thanks lads.

And yeah, Pol has some great individuals and will be interesting to see what he does.

His only pick I didn't quite understand was Zito. Breitner and Ocwirk was a great midfield and instead of Zito he could have gone for someone like Vava to play up front, without changing anything regarding to the restrictions, and also had Maldini on the left.

Anyway, eager to see how we all end up. The standard of picks has been great.

That is exactly what I said before, not sure what is happening there.

I thought it was Maldini left back, Brietner midfield, but now it looks like it could be Maldini in the middle of defence. We'll see, part of the reason I'm interesting to see his team.

Damn you Annah! Really needed Bellini :(

Nice to see Lato finally get picked, I tried so hard to fit him into my team but I just couldn't make it work. Too many Europeans/Post-70 players already.

Thing is, the "logical" path is to roughly look for European defence/midfield and South American front four. I assumed far too many would go that way, which would wind up in many people competing for the same players so went in the complete opposite direction. But nope, a big part of them putting together such good sides is most sides actually not following the more obvious strategy. feck double bluffing

It was so close that I didn't pick him. Originally I didn't want to at all but one of Brazils best central defender in history as an 8th pick was too hard to resist.

Also helps that that '58 side was very gung-ho and he often played as a lone central defender with the Santos bros bombing forward. Still they just conceded 4 goals all tournament. What tipped it over in Bellini's favor was that he played one of the best offensive sides in WC history and acted as a lone central defender with 2 wing-backs successfully.

I wanted to go for someone more famous to have a chance in the popularity contest part of this game - but went the complete opposite way in the end.
