The thing about Fellaini is that we would have to ask him to become the kind of midfielder he never has been, an attacking and creative midfielder. .......
I disagree. In such a line up a Rakitic would do all the play making. Fellaini would just have to emulate Lampard in terms of getting in to the box and winning the ball further up pitch

Hopefully he's back for our next game. We need a presence in the midfield that we don't currently have. I think it's silly to write him off just yet, he's only played a few games, has hardly had a pre-season with us and he's been carrying this injury.

Once he's back and fully fit, I expect to see the proper Fellaini. Those who say he was only effective in the hole and for hoofing it up haven't watched enough of him. When playing the big teams at Everton, he was mostly played as a CM, a box to box midfielder and he was fantastic in these games. In the smaller games, Moyes seemed to favour him playing off the striker where he was effective for the type of football they were playing at the time.

Also for Belgium, he plays in a midfield two or three sometimes and he always looks good for them. Both on and off the ball. His passing is never going to be Scholes-esque or even close to Carrick's but he's comfortable in possession and can pick a pass.

The problem with Fellaini's start IMO was that he said he wanted to emulate Keane for us and be a destroyer. He's not that sort of player IMO, he's doesn't have the legs and mobility to go around bringing up all the attacks and getting into people's faces. Keane was more of a box to box midfielder for us so Fellaini should try emulate that rather than the destroyer that Keane also provided.

He usually played up top against us, did he not?

Fair enough, but does anyone seriously believe Fellaini has it in him to emulate Lampard? Frank is a leader, a risk taker and a midfielder who knows how to find the holes in the last third to take high percentage shots on the ground.

Fellaini may be a better ball winner, but not by much, but his main deficiency is that he doesn't seem to have any mental or technical nous to do anything creative with the ball once he takes possession of it.

What he can do is strip the ball, dish it off to a creative player and crash the box for a cross, either for the direct shot on goal from a header or the knockdown ball. That's a huge talent to have, but if you're going to have a player like that on the pitch everyone else around him has to be in top form to create chances.

Fellaini is (was?) a very good footballer. For whatever reason he didn't settle with us, but even ignoring his Everton performances, he's an integral part of the Belgian team too. He's young and hopefully dedicated enough to put the past few months behind him.

Personally I think he should shave his ridiculous hair, as a sign of intent. Also, it might stop referees booking him everytime he gets within a foot of an opposition player.

The feck? We should cancel his contract and set him free the moment he has a haircut.

I think we can all agree that this was an excellent post up until the bolded part. At which point all your previous good work was forgotten.

Doesn't anyone else think he actually gets more calls against him because of his ridiculous hair? I don't even think it's subconcious, I think refs' eyes are just drawn to its bobbing magnificence.

Appearances do matter. There's a reason why SAF expected Van Del Gouw to cut his pony tail and Bebe his bushy hair. Its difficult to take Fellaini seriously with that Ronald Mcdonalds wig on his head

Of course he should cut his hair - he looks like a clown. Completely unprofessional.

I remember reading somewhere SAF told Bebe to cut his hair as it would help him keep a low profile in Manchester and make the adaptation period slightly easier. Fellaini's a grown man so I don't think it matters whether he cuts his hair or not.

I'm not one of his biggest fans but i think he should be given a good run in our midfield for the rest of the season regardless to early form. We've nothing to play for in the league anymore, he could learn and grow into that role, we can't have an expensive signing like him on the bench for an entire season and then start experimenting with him again next year, he deserves a fair chance and he should get it.

With the pressure relatively off now, Fellaini needs to have a run of games, so we can see what he's like for us fully fit.

Then we can decide if he'll be a good player for us, or whether it's a £12m sale to Villa in the summer.

I'm still convinced Bebe would have ruled supreme if we hadn't taken his dreads

Who knew that the thing that makes Ronaldo a great player is not the hours on the training pitch but the time he puts in perfecting his hair.

Yeah, I agree. Let's see if he can settle and show us something to build on for next season. No reason not to.

But let Karel Poborsky run around with a mop on his head? I don't think Alex Ferguson ever seriously told somebody to get a hair cut.

Ronaldo (Brazil) get injured a lot, since having that pubic hair on his otherwise shaved head. And statistically speaking, 99% of fast players have short haircut.

Play him up top. Would be better than this horrible shit we've seen this season. Our crosses might actually do something.

According to bebe and rai he did. Karel hair wasnt that shocking

See, I'd prefer a ban in this thread.
I don't want to upset people who clearly see Fellaini as a better player than he actually is.

Most people see him as a bag of shite with a mop on his head. How did you reach that conclusion of yours? People want him to succeed now that our midfield is screaming for an improvement, and he is our only hope until the transfer market re-opens in the summer.

He was sub against Arsenal and I've not heard any fresh injury news since then.

He should be ready be involved for Palace and Olympiakos barring another injury.

I want him to get a run in the side before the season finishes. Only way to see if he is good enough for the club.

At Everton he proved adept at exploiting the final third and combining well with his wide players and lead striker akin to Lampard. Lampard himself has never been a main source of creativity. He has been a finaliser. In the hypothetical line us discussed, Fellaini would be a finaliser, just like he was for Everton and is for Belgium. A role in which he'd make the space for a Rakitic to playmake.

Are you really so lacking in self control?

We all know your opinion. If it will never change and you nothing left to add just don't open the thread. If you can't even stop doing that, just don't press the reply button. It's that simple.

Considering how they support Fellaini for Belgium we could do worse than buying Witsel and Defour in the summer. Both solid players and far more likely to come to us despite our lack of Champions League football than some of the names we've been chasing. People might mock Fergie's 'value' transfer policy but its far less embarrassing than openly hunting the likes of Vidal and then being told sorry not interested. Indeed, the value policy would've been better to adopt when Moyes decided he wanted Fellaini...

I know what the stats say and I'm open to believing that, at times, Fellaini has excelled as an orthodox number 8. But the role he plays for Belgium is as the most advanced of a midfield 3, and he excelled most for Everton as the most advanced of a midfield 3. If Fellaini is going to succeed at Man Utd it will be as the most advanced of a midfield 3 attacking the crosses Moyes and Round love so much. I've very little faith that Fellaini is the answer for us. I hope against hope that I'm wrong. But I just dont see it.
